March

Spring record: 19-11-1

Game breakdown: Orlando Hernandez gave up one run on four hits in five innings. … Mike Pelfrey gave up three runs in four innings, all of them in the ninth. … Jose Reyes got two hits, stole two bases and scored two runs. … The Mets had five hits.

Clubhouse chatter: Owner Fred Wilpon joined up with his team and embraced Pedro Martinez on a bullpen mound to pass along good wishes about his father, who has been ill.

NOTEBOOK:

-The Braves claimed infielder Ruben Gotay off waivers. The Mets’ thinking was they didn’t believe he would be productive enough hitting from the right side and wasn’t strong at shortstop

-Rule Five draft pick Steven Register was returned to Colorado.

-Relievers Billy Wagner, Jorge Sosa and Matt Wise pitched in a minor league game at Jupiter.

-Reserve catcher Ramon Castro’s tight right hamstring has improved, but he’s still not ready to play and assistant general manager John Ricco said the club is leaning toward the disabled list.

Tomorrow: Chicago White Sox at Memphis, 5:05 p.m.

Regarding Gotay and the "Mets' thinking" about his defense at shortstop, its not just the Mets, its pretty much a consensus that Gotay is horrible on defense. He's very bad.
It sucks he's gone but what are you gonna do? He's a bench player! Some people as USUAL are over-reacting.
Whether or not he does good or bad, right now, he had no place on the team. The Mets already have Marlon Anderson who does the same exact thing!

My take on Pelfrey is his fastball is good, mid nineties with a sinking motion, unfortunately he can’t control it. The other problem is pelfrey does not have a second or third pitch. This is why IMO he gets hit and gives up runs. Until he can control his fastball and develop a second and maybe a third pitch he will never be effective.

I hope this ends the fifth starter drama and sends Pelfrey back to New Orleans where he belongs.

Why all the Yankee posts on the main Mets site here? Half the articles on the site are Yankees.

    That's not right.
