The bus just left for Orlando. The Braves today. Apparently, the Mets don’t care about letting the Braves getting an early glimpse.

Doesn’t really matter does it?

Afterall, he’s heads-or-tails. What the Braves see today could be completely different the next time.

By the way, now it is official. The Mets placed Ruben Gotay on waivers this morning.

“I thought I did a good job last year that I didn’t deserve this,’’ Gotay said.

There’s a chance he’ll clear waivers as the whoever claims him has to put him on the 25 man roster and I’m sure other teams are having a hard time with thier trimming down process.
Regardless though, he is right, I don’t think he “deserved” it.

  2. Gil in Savannah, Ga.

Damn straight, Ruben deserved better. I don’t agree at all with his being let go. I hope no one claims him, so we can hang on to him. But if not, I hope he catches on with another club and tears it up.

  3. Stillsane

Gotay was a victim of circumstances. Any shot he had at making the big club pretty much evaporated with his injury early in Spring Training. The Mets already having an inordinate amount guys on the 25 man roster that have played second certainly did not help his chances. Unless something drastically changes with the Mets, Gotay’s best opportunities lie with another club.

  4. AstoriaMetsFan

unfortunately for Gotay, his skill set isn’t one which can help the Mets at this point. He doesn’t hit lefties that well and he certainly doesn’t help the team with his glove. He just doesn’t provide balance on the 25 man roster. I liked Gotay, but he really limits flexibility in the line-up and on the field. He’s pretty much a one trick poney.

  5. ghost of bad Met trades

Hey Tatis, a growing pile of former crap from the Expos. Keep picking up the losers Minaya. Can’t wait for you to join Steve Phillips on ESPN. At least Phillips got us to the WS something you’ll never do. Gotay, nice way to cut a guy, kick him off the bus. What a classless move by a classless GM. But you did the same with Leiter, Franco, Piazza, etc….

OT – Take a moment today to read John’s article about Shea Stadium in this morning’s Journal News.

It’s terrific and brings back all those memories…......

  7. scoopcoop

Stillsane, asotoria, thanks for the sane comments.

Unfortunately for Gotay, Omar did not pickup a RH bat to replace Alou or to play RF so that he could possibly be on the team.

As you said, for his sake, he would be better off in another org.

  8. Nate W.

I would take Tatis and Gotay over Clark and Pagan. There is room for everyone.

Myabe Omar just sees now as the best time to try and sneek Gotay to AAA, though with all the missreports over the last two days its not like anyone will not notice.

  9. sloppy

scoop says: “Unfortunately for Gotay, Omar did not pickup a RH bat to replace Alou or to play RF so that he could possibly be on the team.”

So earlier you say he’s this guy who despite not playing big league ball for pretty much four seasons is a force against lefties, now you say he’s gonna be a platoon in right field. You have convinced me. We will not win the division…... I’d rather have scoopcoop on the roster than this joke. By the way where do you come up with these implausible justifications for this guy to make the team?

  10. scoopcoop

Sloppy, I don’t read all the comments people make. But you seem to. Yet you still misquote. I never said he was a force.

But he is RH. And to placate you, I was suggesting he play RF due to your disdain of Church. I don’t expect Tatis to play much at all. But if they needed a 2 RH pinch hitters in a game, they would have two w/him on the team. He is/might be the 25th guy. The Mets will not sink or swim w/him on the roster. Nor would they sink or swim w/Gotay.

But Willie does want his bench guys to be able to play several positions and he wants a couple guys to hit from the right and a couple from the left. It is far from the best situation. It would be great if they could get xman or Millar or Inge, etc. etc.

If you think Gotay could hit RH better than Tatis, then that is your opinion. If you think he can play multiple positions, that is your opinion. But it would appear your opinion is not shared by the team nor just about anybody in BB since Omar could not trade Gotay.

Thanks for the opportunity to make the team. I think I am past my prime. Especially if you were the GM. I’m not under 25 and I have not had a couple of hot months in the bigs. So I think I would be disqualified.

  11. Keith

“But Willie does want his bench guys to be able to play several positions”

I just don’t understand why it is valuable to be able to play multiple positions just because. To me this is a worthless attribute unless you can actually field the position.

The entire point on Gotay is that a team with a short list of young position players waived a former top prospect who had a good season last year. They’re seemingly replacing him with a guy who has barely played in the bigs the last few seasons.

Guys like Tatis are a dime a dozen. I’m sure Tony Batista is available. Someone like Gotay actually have some upside potential.

  12. scoopcoop

Well you will get your wish and see Gotay back in a Met uniform if he clears waivers.

Of course if he clears waivers, what does that say about his abilities?

Name somebody else the Mets can get to be the 2nd RH bat off the bench.

  13. Keith

I could name some guys to be the first RH bat.

Matt Murton, Marcus Thames, Brandon Inge, they could have had Reed Johnson, Brady Clark, they could have had Justin Huber, but Kevin Towers got him for a PTBNL….

There are plenty of options, guys like Murton and Huber who could be had for a bullpen arm, which we have an abundance of.

And since we value guys who can pull the Jose Oquendo, Inge would be perfect. He can play everywhere, hits RH, and can even catch, freeing up Castro to PH. He wouldn’t cost much either because he has a large salary.

  14. Keith

“Of course if he clears waivers, what does that say about his abilities?”

As I said before, this doesn’t prove anything either way. Useful players clear waivers all the time for various reasons.

  15. scoopcoop

“Matt Murton, Marcus Thames, Brandon Inge, they could have had Reed Johnson, Brady Clark, they could have had Justin Huber, but Kevin Towers got him for a PTBNL….

There are plenty of options, guys like Murton and Huber who could be had for a bullpen arm, which we have an abundance of.”

Trading a BP arm for a RH bat on the bench given that arms always gets hurt does not seem like a prudent idea. and given last yrs BP debacle, I would not want to trade away any picthing at this point.

Inge is not available b/c Granderson is hurt. johnson has a bad back. clark has not shown much it would appear since he does not seem to be the option they are taking. I’m sure the others were looked at and the price (probably pitching was too high).

Omar has nothing to trade. that is why he has to use Tatis. blame his no depth farm.

  16. Keith

We don’t have enough arms for the pen?

Wagner, Feliciano, Sosa, Schoenweiss, Wise, Register, Stokes, Heilman, Smith, Kunz, Parnell, Figueroa, Sanchez, Rustich… any more that I’m missing?

That’s 14 arms for 7 spots. We couldn’t offer someone to the Cubs for Murton?

Huber was just for a PTBNL.

But look, this is just turning into a p*ssing contest here.

Personally, I think this RH bat thing is overblown. It’s not like we’ll need to rest guys a bunch in the first month. And who, other than the pitcher, is going to get pinch hit for other than Pagan? The team said Church is going to get a shot to hit lefties… so the way I see it, the first month or so they would have been fine with Gotay.

But whatever. It’s over, he’ll clear waivers, you’ll say something snarky, and all will be right with the world.

  17. Scott from Pelham

It is very clear that the most important attribute of the last guy on the bench is the ability to hit RH. Gotay did not fit the bill.
Huber would have been interesting but would you gamble the last spot on the roster and trade a player of any ability for a guy with no proof that he can hit ML pitching. The fact is the Padres are desperate for hitters and are willing to give the guy a try.
Tatis if he makes the club will be given a chance to prove he could be the right handed hitter off the bench. I will guarantee you if he proves to be as bad as everyone thinks, he will be gone by May 1st. Actually I am certain someone better will come along the question is just how long this will be.

  18. Scott from Pelham

Kieth you are probably right about the need for the last guy on the bench being able to hit right handed but if Tatis or whoever forces another team to replace a logy with a right reliever than the Mets win the battle even if he ( Tatis )is immediately replaced.

  19. JK

Why is everyone assuming Tatis has made the team? I don’t think they’ve made that decision yet.

Also, it’s too soon to bring out the hankies for Gotay. He may have already cleared waivers. We’ll know soon. If he does, they should send him to NO and have him play a little at short. I’m sure there will be an injury or two among Easley, Anderson, and Chavez so Gotay should get his chances.

He got caught in a numbers crunch this year, and hopefully they can find a way to utilize him better next year. With this being Easley’s last year, there probably will be room.

  20. scoopcoop

The reason it seems that Tatis will make team is b/c alot of the guys covering the team think he will.

Plus, going back to the versatility issue, they have played him at multiple positions. And he has played every game since he got here and has gotten alot more at bats than Clark (the other logical guy).

It certainly seems like he is getting the biggest audition.

  21. scoopcoop

JK, Gotay at short. Another indication that Gotay would probably not make the team is that they did not even try him out there.

As has been said, he just did not fit Mets needs b/c he doesn’t do well batting RH.

Keith, the old saying You can never have enough pitching is very true. I’d rather the Mets be short once in awhile with the bats than to be short w/the pitching.

Since they can’t get a more quality guy w/o giving up some BP, I don’t see why they should do it now. If Alou doesn’t come back or there are some other guys who don’t perform, then you can think about it.

Right now, it is too early to get so concerned about getting a better 25 guy on the squad that they should trade away pitching.

  22. letsgometsgo

“Tatis if he makes the club will be given a chance to prove he could be the right handed hitter off the bench. I will guarantee you if he proves to be as bad as everyone thinks, he will be gone by May 1st.”

Thank you Scott Minaya for your guarantee. B I this the dame kind of thing as Franco being on the team until the end of July? But how will we know when you guaranteed he wouldn’t have an important AB in all of April?

  23. Keith

They need to go out and trade for Murton. I am convinced of this. It would be a great move for this team.

Murton gives them someone who could play in LF until Alou gets back and then slide into the 4th OF role when he returns, spelling Church against tough lefties.

Plus, he’s still only 25. He would form a nice platoon with FMart next year in LF, or, if the team thinks FMart is ready and they’re not happy with Church, then they can just let Church walk.

The Cubbies shouldn’t expect much back for him since everyone knows he is buried on that team.

  24. JK

scoop, Tatis may be getting a lot of playing time simply because Willie wants to see what he can do. How else can he make a decision on him? I just don’t think he’s got anything wrapped up yet.

Easley has 3B, 2B, and SS covered. So they don’t absolutely need Tatis. Brady could still make the club instead.

  25. mel

Only a fool believes Randolph makes a decision on this roster.

  26. JK

As GM, Omar makes the final decisions. Obviously. But anyone who thinks Willie has no influence on the final roster coming out of spring training isn’t paying attention.

  27. sloppy

As Mel said… He stands correct…..

  28. Mel

Thanks dude for support , but I have to go to my softball coach and get moved out of center field because its so physically exhausting you know. If I would’ve moved out of there at 15-16 I’d be fighting with Tatis for that versatile job they are filling. Oh well, should have found our friend a long time ago!
