well since Gotay and Register were DFA it makes it pretty clear.

But all the question spots are due to injury so guessing now is almost pointless.

    12 pitchers, 5 man bench.
Duque if he is healthy or Pelfrey. No Sosa or Figs or anyone else.
Joe Smith in a late rally for the last spot in the pen. But only until Dauner is ready.
Castro will go on the DL so Casanova, Easley, M. Anderson, and this is my going out on a limb, Clark will be the opening day LF Tatis will be on the bench, and Pagan will go to AAA.

  7. JM

    Easley
    Chavez
Clark (who should be starting in EITHER leftfield or rightfield when Mets oppose a lefty)
Casanova (based on the assumption that Castro will be on DL to begin the season; of course Castro if he is healthy)

    STARTERS

    Santana
    Martinez
    Perez
    Maine
Hernandez (if he is physically ready, he should be there over Pelfrey; if not, then it’s Pelfrey)

    RELIEVERS

  10. stick

interesting question. The guy earlier that thought Tatis might not be too far off, especailly if he could play 1B!

  11. dave

Seems like everyone thinks the same.

Why did they put Gotay on waivers? If someone picks up a nice young hitter like him we lose. Doesn’t make sense.

  12. Mike C.

Out of what we’ve got right now, healthy? Yikes.

What I want or what there will be?

I would eat Schoeneweis’s contract today, you understand, I don’t care, there’s no way Willie will use him in a non-disasterous way.

I… don’t know if I can write out a twenty-five man roster with Schneider, Church and the corpse of Delgado in it as starters. It’s kind of too depressing.

  13. sloppy

Was he (Gotay) put on irrevocable waivers? If not its just a move to see interest.

  14. sloppy

Read Noble? Mets thinking of dumping Gotay and bring in Tatis who had one good year a mere nine years ago, and maybe make Sosa the starter even tho they never stretched him out all spring, but its ok because he started in winter ball. This front office remains a joke. No plan, no game, no nothing, Hell, some of us here said weeks ago they should do it, but they’re just starting to think about it?? What a crock….. They could have at least been prepared to do it…. Its still the What me worry mets it was all last year.

  15. Paul

    Rotation:
    1) Santana
    2) Martinez
    3) Perez
    4) Maine
    5) Sosa

  16. scoopcoop

sloppy, if Sosa is 5th guy I have to agree that the Mets FO is plain dumb for this move. He could have pitched yesterday or today. But I believe they are going to give the nod to Pelfrey for at least a couple of starts, see where Eldud is physically and then make a decision.

In fact, they are going to make Maine travel to Memphis. Watch him get a stiff back and hurt himself. Another dumb move.

As I said, I’m not surprised Gotay was put on waivers. He is good w/the LH bat. But that is it. If they could have gotten something for him, they would. They are taking the chance that b/c he is seen as a so-so player that he will clear waivers and go back to NO as some depth.

If your going to be on the bench and you can only play one position on the field (2b) and you can only hit RH pitching, your probably not going to be on the team.

Not saying that Easely or Anderson or the rest are something great, but they are more versatile.

But of course you and Mike C and some others will be convinced that it is b/c Omar only likes old guys. He does favor them, but he also has had younger guys play important roles (OP/Maine the biggest of them).

The one that I do not understand is this idea of Stokes over Smith or Register. This one is clearly b/c they can put Smith in NO and that they don’t feel they can keep Register for the whole yr on the team so why bother. But Stokes is so awful. He will be like Sele (Never used) b/c he is so bad. Gotta hope Sanchez is ready w/in a few weeks.

  17. mel

Scoop: I think starting Pelfrey would be a huge mistake. No matter how bad others are, if you want this guy in the future, he needs an environment where he can learn to pitch, learn to throw whatever pitches will eventually work for him. Shea Satium is not the place. Sosa is a fine temp, the on;y problem is their lack of planning by not stretching him out.

Replacing Gotay with Tatis is out and out pathetic, The guy hasn’t performed well in almost a decade. It is a frwakin joke he’s even in consideration. And where can he field??? Nowhere ever. But remember, putting him on n on-revocable waivers doesn’t mean anytthing. Its a fishing expo and its a chance to get him to the minors and keep him. Of course, the smart move would be to disable him then when healtyh you get a month to play him and stall on moves and have him to repalce whatever over the hill guy gets hurt first. But not this team. That would involve thinking ahead. Mets don’t do that. Minaya plan is a plan for today only…..
I haven’t seen Register or Stokes so i can’t make a judgement, but I saw Smith’s last 2 outings and he looks like he’s back. I have no problem with him on the roster.

  18. Keith

I’ll take a stab at this:

    Starting Lineup (8):
C: Schneider, 1B: Delgado, 2B: Castillo, 3B: Wright, SS: Reyes, LF: Pagan, CF: Beltran, RF: Church

    Starting Rotation (5):
    Johan, Pedro, Ollie, Maine, Sosa

    Pen (7)
Wagner, Heilman, Feliciano, Wise, Schoenweiss, Register, Stokes

    Bench (5)
    Castro, Chavez, Anderson, Easley, Clark

    DL: Gotay, Duque, Sanchez

    AAA: Pelfrey, Smith, Figueroa

Here’s how I see it. They should let Clark and Pagan platoon in LF so they can assess Clark’s viability as a RH bat in case Church struggles mightily against LH pitching. If Clark does well then they wouldn’t need to go out and acquire a RH bat.

Instead of waiving Register or Stokes, put them both in the pen. Smith has options, so he unfortunately is a victim of the numbers game, but it would be a mistake to just throw away some useful arms. See how these guys do, and if they do well, then you could trade one of them (perhaps in a package with Gotay) for a RH OF bat if Clark stinks it up (maybe Murton on the Cubs, since they just inexplicably signed Reed Johnson).

Sosa should be the 5th starter. Pelfrey and Niese are not ready yet, and both could use some seasoning in the minors. Figgy, I’m not sold on. Duque needs to spend time in extended spring training to get more work on his new windup. Transitioning back to the pen is a lot easier than vice versa.

WILDCARD: Claudio Vargas. He is available, and the Mets should sign him. His peripherals are pretty impressive, and some time with Peterson could have him trusting his stuff and pounding the zone. He would make a perfect 5th starter on this team and would allow Pelfrey to get a full season in AAA to work on his off speed/ breaking pitches.

  19. mel

Vargas won’t be touched until Friday by anyone. Until then you get him for 1 buck from the Brewers but will owe him 3.6 mil. Starting Friday he’s a free agent.

  20. Keith

Well, however they get him, they should get him. I think he would be a guy with some nice upside and a perfect 5th starter.

  21. scoopcoop

I agree that Pelfrey should go to NO. But heard talk on FAN and they were sure he would get the nod. It is a tough call b/c if you send him down now maybe his confidence really drops but if he pitches and stinks and then gets sent down it could be worse. Not an easy situation.

I got a feeling that the Mets are not gonna add salary unless they can get rid of some salary, so Vargas might not be in picture.

Tatis is only possible b/c of the need for a RH bat. They have no other options except Clark b/c Pagan does not hit lefties well.

But I would want him down in NO as depth insurance only. But I have no idea if he would go take a NO assignment.

  22. Steve (The Original)

Pitchers: Santana/Martinez/Perez/Maine/Figueroa/Wise/Sanchez/Heilman/Wagner/Feliciano/Sosa. Pelfrey to NO, Duque to the DL

    Catchers:
Schneider/Cassanova/Waiver wire p/u. Castro to DL

    Infield:
    Delgado/Castillo/Reyes/Wright

    Outfield:
    Pagan/Beltran/Church/Chavez

    Bench:
    Anderson/Easley/Clark

I think they will carry 3 catchers and the 3rd catcher isn’t on the roster yet. Either that or Gotay will end up making the team if healthy. If he is borderline the Mets would be stupid not to DL him and keep Tatis on the bench.

  23. Keith

“I got a feeling that the Mets are not gonna add salary unless they can get rid of some salary, so Vargas might not be in picture.”

I rarely get really irritated with the Mets (because after all, it’s just baseball), but this would really annoy me if it was the reason why they didn’t sign Vargas. Trading Milledge signals to me that this team is going for it this year. They should not allow money to get in the way of acquiring someone who would help the team, and I do think Vargas could be very valuable as a 5th starter.

  24. sloppy

Keith: They should get him and look at every DFA’d guy the next week.
Tatis making the team would be a sad joke on Met fans. AAA fine for a 2 week call up as a PH if Easley gets hurt. Other than that its pathetic. What’s Minaya’s criteria, the guy can still bend while a shot goes by him?
I’d rather keep Casanova on the roster and then he or Castro can at least PH.

  25. Keith

Sloppy, I have been calling for this team to carry 3 catchers for 2 years. Castro’s power is totally wasted on the bench at the end of games.

Duque is not going to give us anything this year. I can’t believe the media, who make a big deal out of things as dumb as this ARod comment, aren’t making a big deal out of El Duque learning an entirely new windup after pitching for what, 20+ years? I can’t imagine this ending well.

  26. scoopcoop

The only reason Tatis is being considered is b/c he is more versatile than Gotay.

I’m no fan of his, but the Mets do need somebody besides Easely on the bench who can hit lefties.

  27. scoopcoop

This is the way it is going to be guys when it comes to the last few spots on the roster throughout the yr.

Minaya has nothing to trade, so expect alot of guys like Tatis. More so this yr than ever before b/c he can’t make a trade and there is no help in the minors. And he probably has no money to spend either. So you are gonna get alot of guys come out of the woods (Tatis, Figgy, Stokes, etc…).

  28. Tit for Tatis

    Starting Lineup (8):
C: Schneider, 1B: Delgado, 2B: Castillo, 3B: Wright, SS: Reyes, LF: Pagan, CF: Beltran, RF: Church

    Starting Rotation (5):
    Johan, Pedro, Ollie, Maine, Pelfrey

    Pen (7)
Wagner, Heilman, Feliciano, Wise, Schoenweiss, Sosa, Stokes

    Bench (5)
    Castro, Chavez, Anderson, Easley, Tatis

    DL: Duque, Sanchez

AAA: Smith, Figueroa, Gotay (if he clears waivers), Register (if he clears waivers)

Sign Vargas for depth at AAA

  29. sloppy

You are delirious if you think Tatis is more versatile than Gotay. He’s more versatile than me, but he’s not versatile at all.. I know I know his statsa show he played a couple games in a couple places but so what, so did Gotay. There’s no excuse for adding a guy like Tatis to the roster.
And to the guy above, Vargas will get a major league job somewhere. He’s not coming for the fun of New Orleans.

  30. Steve (The Original)

Sloppy: How much you wanna bet that Gotay starts the season on the 15 day DL?

  31. Steve (The Original)

Geez, I forgot Blowenweiss. Substitute him for the third catcher I mentioned.

  32. sloppy

Steve (the original): I hope he does start the year on the DL. I would applaud that move. Someone else already wrote that today. DL him, and then when he starts playing you have 30 more days to leave him in AAA, and bring him back when one of the old timers goes down. But that doesn’t mean put a nine years ago guy on the roster instead. If you want that righty bat, keep 3 catchers and Castro is your RH bat. Tatis gives you nothing. Bring back Franco, bring back Cleon jones, they bat righty also. But like Tatis, they are useless. I’d rather have A-Hern on the roster, at least he can catch the ball and Pinch Run.

  33. scoopcoop

    sloppy, can Gotay hit lefties?

Can he play any position except 2B (if he can even do that and maybe ss or 3B)?

I didn’t say Tatis was good. But he does play more than one position even if he doesn’t play them well.

That is versatility. It might not be good play, but it is versatility.

  34. scoopcoop

It would be great if the Mets could get Nady, or Millar or Inge or (pick your favorite RH who can play multiple positions), but they have nothing to trade.

So who should be the RH bat that you guys are always complaining that the Mets don’t have?

Your choices are slim (Tatis, Clark) or none it would seem.

I don’t like these guys either, but will you be going crazy when your favorite players Church or Scheinder come up against a lefty in the 8th and there is only Gotay to PH?

  35. Scott from Pelham

Could someone tell me if Tatis is even on the 40 man roster.
I was under the impression that Tatis was the same as Clark
    a non-roster invite to camp.
Tatis played last year at NO maybe he will start the season again at NO.
I think Omar is looking for more flexibility at the end of the bench and the back of the bullpen.
    No more Sele’s, Franco’s or Newhan’s

  36. dave

Pelf needs to be sent down.

He needs to work on whatever pitches, mindset or whatever to get him ready.

He is not ready now and Shea is not the place to learn.

    We have options.

  37. sloppy

Don’t you listen scoopcoop. Several of us said that casanova should be on the roster so Castro could be the 2nd bat from the right side. Plus did you all forget Easley. did he get cut too, or is he the righty number one PH?

You say verstility is a guy who can play badly at a lot of places… Anyone can play badly in a lot of plces. Hardly an endorsement.

  38. sloppy

scoop i remember a game in 86 when Orosco and McDowell split time between the mound and right field. I guess they were versatile????? Remember the game vs Cincy… 10th inning. Eric Davis running for Rose stole third, Knight and him got into it and Knight and Mitchell were ejected along with Davis, leaving Mets with 7 position players. Carter was moved from catch to 3rd and Hearn came into catch. Orosco was moved to right and McDowell came into pitch. Davey kept switching Orosco and McDowell until the game ended, raising the question if someone could get a save and a win.

  39. scoopcoop

sloppy, you assume that I have all day and night to read every post. I don’t have time to read every post. I am fine w/the idea of 3 catchers. However, you can forget that idea b/c Omar said no to it.

It is not that Easely can’t be the RH pinch hitter. I was stating that if more than one RH bat is needed, then Easely is the only one.

So they need 2 RH bats. Since Omar is against the idea of 3 catchers, your only realistic answer is somebody else. I was not endorsing Tatis. I was giving a realistic answer to the problem. I don’t try to think that writing on a blog has any influence on the Mets.

So I try to think of what they will do not necessarily what I think would be great. I guess it comes from the fact that my job is project management. I don’t have time to fantasize about unrealistic scenarios.

That is what is almost always the basis of my posts. And in this case, for better or worse it looks like the guy that fills the need is Tatis.

  40. sloppy

OK Scoop: But heres a scoop. The Pirates released star RHP Byung-Hyun Kim… Now there’s a guy Omar can pick up and use in the great tradition of 5th starter he has created in Queens, Lima, Gonzalez, Lawrence, Varga, Williams, He’s is the guy go get him Omar…

  41. scoopcoop

Actually slop, now that I have had a little more time to think about it, the scenario of 3 catchers does not make sense. B/c it reduces the versatility of the bench.

Chances that you will need 2 RH pinch hitters in one game or even 1 RH pinch hitter every nite are slim. But you may want to play a RH bat against a lefty SP (you especially would want to do that w/Church).

Hence, if you carry 3 catchers you don’t have that extra RH bat to use as a position player.

I would guess this is Omar’s thinking, and therefore, he and Willie etal, shot down the 3 catcher scenario pretty quick.

  42. scoopcoop

Kim would certainly fit into the Lima, Lawrence, etal mold. And it looks like he is pretty cheap.

Maybe Omar’s assistants can keep him in the dark on this one and he passes.

As I have said, sloppy, I am very critcal of Omar’s talent evaluation (especially unproven talent).

That is why he has not developed the Braves-like minor leagues he said he would.

Case in point in today’s game is Lindstrom. Why he let this guy go, I don’t understand.

Then as you have said he goes out and gets Burgos who is not half the pitcher Lindstrom is.

But, watching Niese and Parnell maybe he does have something with these guys. It’s only a few inn and both of them need time to work on their command but they did not look bad, espcially their breaking pitches.

In fact, I’d say there breaking stuff is better than Pelfrey’s. And where is that 97 Pelfrey FB? But he is gonna get alot of chances. 9th picks do.

  43. Keith

Pelfrey needs to scrap his awful slider and go back to his curve.

In fairness to Burgos, he is significantly younger than Lindstrom, who took a long time to develop.

So far, so good with Parnell and Niese. Don’t forget Rustich, Vinyard, and Kunz down on the farm as well.

  44. sloppy

What happened to Pelfrey’s fastball??? What happened to everything about him…. I tell you no matter who ends up the 5th starter, it should be anyone but Pelfrey, not because I don’t like him but just watching him, his face, his body, he needs to go away from New York, just relearn how he pitched in college and start all over. These other kids… Keep them away from Shea, let them grow and learn and gain real confidence…. Pelfrey keep him away also. Let him pitch at least 5 games great anywhere, any level, He’s on the edge of Steve Blass disease, and I don’t think they created a cure for it yet.

  45. scoopcoop

True Lindstrom is older. But I recall they had him as rep in futures game. What happened to their interest in him?

Anyway, I don’t think Burgos will develop into anything. Even if he comes back physically, I don’t have much confidence in anyone who buys their lifetime earnings in jewelry and then leaves it in their hotel room. That decision making seems to be like his decision making on the mound-Not very good.

Pelf’s makeup seems very bad. It is one thing to down play yourself like Miane does, but Pelf takes it the nth degree.

  46. Keith

“I don’t have much confidence in anyone who buys their lifetime earnings in jewelry and then leaves it in their hotel room.”

I would have to agree with you (and that is one of the funnier things I have read on here, btw.) But I’ll never rule out a power arm like his.

As for Lindstrom, he dazzled in the Futures Game in 2006. This is what Keith Law said about him:

“Matt Lindstrom (Mets) closed the win out for the U.S., and it was impressive. His first fastball was 99 mph, and he hit 100 several times (101 on the stadium gun). He also threw a plus slider at 84-85, although he had two back up on him. His control has already made huge strides since last year, and he’s one more small improvement away from pitching late in major-league games. He’s got to be the first player teams will ask the Mets for at the trading deadline.”

Aaaaaaand… we traded him for Jason Vargas and Adam Bostick. AWWWWsome!

  47. JK

    My guess:

    Opening Day Lineup(8)
    Reyes
    Castillo
    Wright
    Beltran
    Delgado
    Clark
    Church
    Schneider
    (pitcher)

    Rotaton(5)
    Santana
    Pedro
    Ollie
    Maine
    Pelfrey

    Bench(5)
    Anderson
    Easley
    Pagan
    Endy
Casanova (Castro if not on DL)

    Bullpen(7)
    Wagner
    Heilman
    Feliciano
    Schoeneweis
    Wise
    Figueroa
    Sosa

Gotay is traded, starts the season on the DL, or clears waivers and goes to NO. El Duque goes to the DL. Smith, Stokes, Sanchez and Tatis start the season at NO. I hope Stokes doesn’t make the team. The only way he should make it is if they need a long man because Sosa is put in the rotation.

  48. Keith

I’m not one of these guys to jump up and scream “where was Omar on this!?”, but seriously, where was Omar on this:
