On Tap Today: Heading to Lauderdale

March
24

Coming to you from Rt. 95, exit 87B to be exact. These air cards are really great. Riding shotgun, so I get to tap out a few lines.

Lauderdale’s stadium is one of the dumpiest of the circuit. The best thing about it is Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris filmed a movie here in the 60s. “Safe at Home.”

William Frawley … Fred Mertz, I believe, was a coach.

Looking at my playlist after listening to “Stairway to Heaven,” and I have a question. All the great English bands had a long song, five minutes plus.

Which is the best?

Stones: Sympathy for the Devil
Beatles: Hey Jude
The Who: Won’t Get Fooled Again
Led Zep: Stairway to Heaven

On the baseball side, John Maine going for the Mets today. A week to go and there’s a few issues on the table. We know about the fifth starter. Angel Pagan and Brady Clark for an outfield spot. More than a few guys might open on the DL or in extended spring training (Duaner Sanchez, Ruben Gotay, Orlando Hernandez).

Talk with you later.

No contest – it's Hey Jude

  2. Ilan

JD – What do you think about Nick Johnson? His on base % is off the charts and he takes pitchers deep in the count, always a plus for our legs ahead of him in the lineup. I know we have Delgado this season, but getting our hands on Johnson would keep us out of the Texiera fiasco thats to come. Johnson comes cheaper and although coming off a nasty injury, thanks to the Mets if my memory is correct, hes younger and has already dealt with the NY media. The Nats have Young at 1st and we know Omar likes to trade within the division.

  3. Andrew V.

    Hey Jude.

Anyone see Across The Universe?? Good stuff.

  4. John Delcos

I like Nick Johnson a lot. I covered him with the Yankees and he's great to deal with personally. As a player, he can hit. I just wish he'd stay healthy.-JD

  5. Dan Gurney

When has Nick Johnson ever been healthy to take a risk on?

I go with "Echoes" of the Pink Floyd "Meddle" album. But then I just got done reading the current biography on the group "Comfortably Numb".

  6. Anthony De Rosa

I'm going with Sympathy For The Devil because I think I'm a little burned out on Stairway at this point.

I think Matt Wise should use it as his walk up song when he comes to the mound. I know he was trying to pick a song and that seems like a great choice.

    Anthony: I'll pass it on.-JD

  8. Nate W.

Any word on what is to happen with Ft. Lauderdale and Winter Haven's complex's with the Orioles moving north and the Indians to Arizona? Seems a waste, but those two are noted as dumps…

I much prefer In the Light, Since I've been Loving You, or even Achill's Last Stand to Stairway. Nice one Dan

  9. RJ

"Australia," by the Kinks of course.

No hobbits in Australia. Luc Longley? Yes, most definitely.

  10. Ilan

JD – caught the cip of you on Mets Weekly, not too shabby! I've seen Rosen and Lennon on there a bunch; glad you got much due face time. Hopefully more to come!

  11. Ilan

    *clip

  12. Billy

    Springsteen – Thunder Road…..

F-Mart for Nick Johnson, sounds about right….

  13. dave

Of the songs listed – Sympathy for the Devil.

    Johnson sounds ok. How much?

  14. Testiculon

Watch out for that guy – he's changing lanes without checking his blind spot.

  15. Ilan

Billy, your nuts. No way Omar trades Fernando. This kid is for real, just watch him play. Its like a 19 year old Straw sans cocaine.

  16. RG

    "Kashmir" by Led Zeppelin!

Plus isn't it cool how Robert Plant and Jimmy Page rock the Rick Peterson haircut?

  17. Ilan

    RG, spot on! well done!

  18. RG

They should play "Kashmir" when Jacket visits the mound.

  19. Ilan

RG – Thank you for making my day! probably more like my life in relation to El Jacket will now be filled with "Kashmir". sweet!

  20. RG

Ilan—you are welcome. My day is blah because the game is not being broadcast on mlb tv or radio. But I've already played three different versions of "Kashmir" on YouTube. As an aside, did you see the Mets-Tigers ST game? Magglio Ordonez hair was pretty awesome. NYM-DET could have a World Series of Hair between Maggs and Jacket.

  21. John Delcos

RG: That's a tough call. Who gets the Golden Brush?-JD

  22. RG

JD—Hate to admit it, but in that one game I saw Maggs' hair was better than Jacket's. Who knows what an October match-up would bring? But let Maggs have the Golden Brush. We'll take the W.S. trophy.

  23. Ilan

Wow, what a fun question to come back from lunch too! I've got this feeling that Pedro will let the curls grow longer than recent years. With a cap on, he's already got the bozo wings starting to form. If so, watch out Magglio!
As for the W.S., I could see the match up now. And oh how fun it will be to feast on Dontrelle again!

  24. RG

Doesn't Dontrelle always hit a homer when he plays against us?

Hope you are right on Pedro. The 'fro is OK but the curls were awesome. He could be Jimmy Page to Jacket's Robert Plant.
