I would take him and he would replace Brady Clark on the roster.
Brady Clark PROBABLY would be more willing to accept an assignment.
But by signing Johnson, he should be on a short leash.

I'd rather give Brady Clark a shot... and I don't even see where he would fit on the roster.

Johnson used to be a useful hitter before the back injury, but we already have more than enough health-related question marks.

If he takes a minor league deal as another backup, fine.

hit .319 in center field in 06 - last year was do to back injuries and still hit lefties well- says he's better this year hitting .289 - cut because they went cheap not because he was ineffective.... not sure if hes an up grade over Clark but not a bad pickup if they did it...

At this point I'd think he's a "low risk, high reward" guy. I think that used to be Steve Phillips's old line, and it rings true here. Aside from forking over some cash, they dont have to give up anything to get him...and if he works out, he works out...if not you can cut him.

Now on the other hand, you can make the case that maybe we have too many OF's....I'd say Pagan deserves a first shot, I haven't really followed Clark all that well this Spring, so I dunno how he's done, but I might take Johnson over him.

I keep thinking he will never get his power back because of the back surgery. I always think about Mattingly when it comes to players with back problems. Mattingly was never the same player and the Blue Jays must be thinking this or why else would they release him.
If he wants to sign and play at New Orleans I would take a chance, but at this time Pagan or Clark are still better choice's.

He hit .325 against lefthanders last year with a .913 OPS. From 2005 through 2007, he hit .305 vs. lefties. Might be valuable if they have room on the roster for him.

He hits lefties pretty well. Seems like something worth exploring.
