El Duque can’t be put into the rotation this quickly, especially after Sunday (3 inning, 5 runs) and neither can Mike “I was making bad pitches and they were in a hitting mode” Pelfrey; he should be quickly sent down to New Orleans AAA to be retaught how to make good pitches.
With a 3.14 ERA this Spring, including his last start against the Astros (4 innings, 1 run, 1 hit: HR), Nelson Figueroa is the obvious choice for 5th starter. Last year in AAA (Mexican League), he had 19 starts, 153.1 innings (none in relief). That’s 8+ inning per game. He pitched into the 10th inning in the opening game of this year’s Caribe World Series (1 run allowed) of which he was voted MVP. With Figueroa on the mound there may not be a need for middle relief, just a closer the way it used to be.
