Game breakdown: Both fifth starter candidates were rocked. Orlando Hernandez gave five runs on four hits in three innings. Mike Pelfrey gave up eight runs on 13 hits in 4 1/3 innings. … Two hits each from Jose Reyes and Fernando Tatis.
Clubhouse chatter: A little confusion. Tomorrow’s initial travel roster did not include catcher Brian Schneider, who was none too pleased by the omission. Schneider did not catch today because he wanted to catch John Maine today, and Johan Santana and Pedro Martinez the next two days. An updated travel roster was posted.
NOTEBOOK: Jose Valentin will travel to NY tomorrow for an anti-inflammatory injection. It is obvious he will not be ready for the start of the season. … GM Omar Minaya said the team is discussing whether to open the season with infielder Ruben Gotay (sprained ankle) on the DL. … Moises Alou, Jason Vargas and Ambiorix Burgos were placed on the DL retroactive to March 21. … Relievers Billy Wagner, Pedro Feliciano and Aaron Heilman each threw a scoreless inning in a minor league game.
Tomorrow: Baltimore at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., 1:05 p.m.
