Greetings from Winter Haven, one of the most inappropriately named places on Earth. They do have a Dairy Queen concession stand. Had a Buster Bar for lunch. Hmmmm, that’s good eating.
Anyway, here’s the batting order for your heroes.
METS
2B Luis Castillo
LF Brady Clark
CF Carlos Beltran
1B Carlos Delgado
SS Damion Easley
RF Ryan Church
3B Fernando Tatis
C Brian Schneider
DH Michel Abreu
LHP Oliver Perez
On a side note. Do you remember the M&M’s commercial that comes out at Christmas? Where the M&M’s stumble across Santa and say, “he does exist.’’ And, Santa says about the candies, “they do exist.’’
I thought of that when I wrote Brian Schneider’s name in my scorebook.

I love the DQ German chocolate Blizzard.
RG: Great call.-JD
May I assume that Buddy Clark is actually Brady Clark’s evil twin?
Sheadenizen: Oooops. Good catch. Correction noted and made. Thanks.-JD
Ok, crazy trade proposal time.
Why don’t the Mets offer Gotay and Carp to the Giants for Zito. Before I get tomatoes thrown at me, at least let me make the argument.
Why it works for the Mets: Gotay is blocked by Castillo and likely will never be a starter for us. Plus, with Easley, AHern, and Marlon, we have 3 backup 2B and Valentin is always a phone call away if Castillo goes down. I seriously doubt Carp will ever be our starting 1B, so we might as well just deal him. Zito, even in his crappy NL debut last season won 11 games and gave the Giants 197 innings. His VORP (value over replacement player) was 24.7 (down from 49.9 in ‘06). By contrast, Ollie’s VORP was 24. With Duque a question mark and Pelfrey the only other MLB ready pitcher in the system, Zito would give us a very valuable 200 innings, plus he could feasibly rebound after being reunited with Peterson and adjusting to the NL. And let’s face it, Johan and Maine are the only 2 pitchers we can count on 100%. Ollie is up and down, and Pedro is always an injury risk. Plus, if Zito does well, we could just let Ollie walk and focus our energies elsewhere in the off season.
Why it works for the Giants: The Giants are horrible. They have no young position players to speak of and none in their minor league system on the way. They have remarkable young pitching, but they have no offense. Bengie Molina and Aaron Rowand are their best players. Gotay and Carp would give them two young players who could give them cheap production while shedding Zito’s contract (even if they end up paying half.)
Teams are gonna bring lefties in by the boatload to pitch to this lineup…...
Nice job on Mets Weekly, JD!
LOL at the Gotay & Carp for Zito proposal. Gotay is most likely a career platoon player & Carp has regressed to the point that the Mets didn’t even invite him to Spring Training. You think these two are going to bring back a young guy that’s 5 years removed from a Cy Young award? I don’t care what his spring ERA is or how much he’s getting paid, the Giants would never do that – if for no other reason than the backlash they would receive from their fans.
If the Mets picked up the majority of the salary, you don’t think they could land Zito on the cheap players wise? It would probably cost more than Gotay and Carp, but just throwing the idea out there.
Mets don’t want to pick up that $$ and the Giants would be completely stupid to take just Gotay and Carp
Ok, ok… dumb idea. Next idea… Brandon Inge:
“UT Brandon Inge started at shortstop for the Tigers, the first time he has played there this spring. He has also caught and played third base, left field and center field. Manager Jim Leyland said Inge has been impressive everywhere and added that Inge would also get a look at second base.”
Sounds like Inge is gonna be like Kevin Mitchel was in 86….
Keith—Giants will want a lot more for Zito. I often wonder if he regrets signing with them and not coming to the Mets. He’s been mediocre since Jacket left OAK. Sure SF gave him $$$$$$ but the way they are going he’s never going to come close to a championship.
Inge is unhappy in his role at DET, but I think they need him too much to let him go. He’s their uber-backup guy. Plus his contract is fat and does anyone want to pay that much for a backup utility guy?
Zito’s a California boy. I’m sure he doesn’t regret coming to NY and he never will.
