An important day for the Mets. Pedro Martinez is feeling it. Says he’s open about next year, but this year will take care of that.
If he’s healthy and has a good year I don’t see him walking away. If he can play he will.
Another positive is Brian Schneider, who plans to play tomorrow at Winter Haven.
We saw Paul Lo Duca today, but even though he’s been hurt, I’d still rather have Schneider.
Schneider is better defensively and Lo Duca is no great loss offensively.
When Lo Duca pushed Willie Randolph to come off the DL and got hurt, and when he was suspended for blowing his cool and got tossed, I figured that was it for him as a Met. All that missed time, might have cost the Mets at least one game.

I see that Mr Delcos wants everyone to be respectful fo each other so I won’t make fun of you sensitive little Metsie fans. I know its sad to watch the 2 bums we dumped on you. Yes, you beat our minor league pitcher but that worthless Church couldn’t touch an average pitcher like Matt Chico. For that matter none of your “stars” could”, and poor little catcher Schneider, afraid of the big bad Nats he had too go and play against the minor leaguers, next year you can bring in little leaguers to pitch to him. It won’t matter. He’s done… nagging injuries come faster and fastrer to this never was over rated and over hyped minor leaguer who caught the fancy of the lousy GM you have. And Church, he’s even worse then we remember…. Metsies will be booing him from day one….
See ya when it counts little metsies….
Main reasons LoDuca was let go was b/c he was 35, losing his abilities and the concern he was a negative influence on DW.
scoop, it’s interesting that they felt Lo Duca would be A negative influence on Wright. I never heard that before. But I can see why they had that concern. However, if there is one player who is almost beyond being corrupted it’s goody two shoes, D-Wright. But I guess you never know. Spitzer was the last politician I would ever have thought would be involved in a prostitution ring.
I was not surprised that Spitzer was doing the dirty thing w/hookers. He is as arogant as they come and I’m sure he thought he could get away w/it.
I hope if Mets sign Pedro they will still have $$ for OP (if he has good season). And I hope they still have $$ for another bat.
Yeah, Spitzer was arrogant and ruthless, but he was also a spic-and-span law and order guy. I find his indiscretions the most shocking of any politician in recent memory.
As for money for Pedro + Ollie + a big bat (like Teixeira) ... I don’t see it. Maybe two out of the three, but all three is going to cost too much. I’d go with Pedro and Ollie. And if Boras is too greedy, forget Ollie and try to sign a bat less costly than Teixeira. Isn’t Boras Texiera’s agent too? If so, forget him.
Yes Boras is also Tex’s agent.
Amazing how he seems to have so many of the best players.
Maybe Mets should use him as a scout for young talent so they can build up their minor leagues.
Delagdo (20MM)+Alou(8MM)+Elduque(6MM)+Pedro(3MM-assuming he gets 10 instead of 13MM)=37MM available for 09
37MM-10MM(Pedro)-13MM(OP)-2MM(Maine signs thru arb yrs)=12MM-a few MM more for DW/JR as contracts get bigger (not quite enough for Tex)
Annie: I lost where you posted about Siena and Met games. I’d check out MLB.com and check your zip code to see if the Mets are blacked out where you live. It might give you an option to watch….
scoop,
In the 1st equation you already discounted Pedro’s salary. Then in the 2nd eq you subtracted $10M again for him. So, the final total should be 22M not 12M.
So let’s say that’s about $16M after rising salaries for other players (being conservative here, I think). We still have to get a 1B and a LF with that money or raise expenditures on salaries. With the new park and increased ticket prices (again) I think/hope they will spend more.
I’m not sure if Fernando Marinez will be ready for full-time mlb play by this time next year. If he is that would lower costs considerably. Although it would be hard for Omar to bank on that happening during the winter.
Nice job on Mets Weekly, JD!
Polter, nice post.
This is why Milledge should have been in RF and Gotay should have been at 2B this season. We need to be able to sign Pedro, Ollie, and big bat to replace Delgado/Alou next off season. Even if FMart isn’t going to be ready next year, at least Milledge and Gotay would have provided cheap, productive talent at 2b and RF.
When Minaya first came on as a GM he said his goal was to get younger and more athletic. I’m still waiting.
Now before I get criticized for being a hypocrite since I am known as being Church’s greatest crusader, I am drawing a distinction. I think it is unfair to criticize Church as a ballplayer simply because he was traded for Millz. Church is a fine ballplayer, and I think he will do fine here. However, Milledge would have been a cheaper, productive player for a longer period of time, which would have allowed us to allocate payroll to greater needs (pitching and a big bat).
