Mets Chat: As the players rest, what’s on your mind?

March

mets-logo.jpg

The Mets are off until Wednesday night. That should leave us plenty of time to think about the team. I don’t see them doing anything big in the trade market between now and Opening Day. I think their left fielder is already in camp.

Where do these show up on your worry meter?

-Duaner Sanchez hasn’t pitched in back-to-back games, yet.

-Carlos Delgado is off to a slow start.

-There’s no fifth starter yet, and we know Duque won’t be ready by Opening Day.

-The center fielder and second baseman have only played a handful of games.  The catcher has played less.

If there’s anything else on your minds, let’s hear it.

I think El duque will be ready wen the mets need a fifth starter in mid-April. Also sanchez will start the season on the DL so not worrying news, also Delgado seems like he’s coming around, beltran is playing the OF and castilla is back. Schneider worries me but he’ll be ready.

  2. metsfan

alright, let’s address these issues, first, the 5th starter, we don’t need one until mid-April, and El Duque will probably be ready by then, if not, I beleive Pelfrey can be a capable 5th starter. As for Duaner, its best to not rush him, and from the looks of it, we’ve got a bunch of good arms in camp who are pitching well, no worries there. As for the CF and second basemen, they’ll be fine, still time to strengthen and get re-acclimated, no worries there. Delgado hasn’t had enough time to start anything, so i wouldn’t even characterize it as a slow start, he hasn’t even started yet, obviously he’s still a concern, but he’s not going to regress beyond what he did last year, that shouldn’t be a huge concern, and further more, there’s no other options which are better. As for the catchers, its just bad luck, kind of sucks, hopefully they’ll both get healthy. Castro I doubt more then Schneider, since Castro has a history of injuries.

  3. JK

John, none of those things you mentioned are a real big worry. That’s because the Mets starting rotation is so strong this year that it will compensate for other weaknesses. Because of the rotation, this is the most confidence I’ve had in the Mets coming out of spring training since Omar took over.

Duaner Sanchez, while he would be a huge plus if he could come back close to his 2006 form, is not absolutely necessary. The bullpen will be better because they’ve gotten rid of Sele and Mota and because they have some others in camp who are pitching very well and look promising like Register and Wise.

Not expecting too much out of Delgado and El Duque this year, but the improved rotation and bullpen will mitigate those weaknesses.

And there’s no reason to worry about Castillo and Beltran at this point since both played the field the past week without incident.

Barring some unforeseen injuries, I think the NL East is theirs for the taking.

  4. scoopcoop

If ST means anything, the BP has pitched well. Let Sanchez go slow.

If Pedro is healthy, then the 5th starter is not a big issue. Mets won 88 w/o a 5th starter and no Santana. Anything out of Eld/Pelfrey/other is a plus.

Delgado-hard to say. He hit a couple of balls decent. SO several times too.

Castillo looks like he is moving fine. Beltran I have some concern b/c he is bigger part of offense.

  5. sloppy

“What, me worry” Omar and his band of merry blind loyalists…...

  6. metsfan

then there’s fans like sloppy who for some reason can’t deal with a team that will probably win 90 games, because he won’t be happy until we have a 110 win team, and he blames Omar for this, but for some reason, has forgotten how putrid this franchise was before Omar got here. What is it sloppy? Do you demand greatness? Or did you forget this is the NY Mets…and we’ve never been a great team, save for one year in the 80’s.

  7. Bryan

John, you might as well add Ryan Church to mix of questions. When was the last time he played the field? We all know it is a long season. I am trying to think positive and hope they can start the season strong and not get in an early hole. That is all you can hope for at this present time.

  8. sloppy

    Metsfan:

What’s a matter loser fan.. Don’t like it when people don’t bow to your dictatorial demands? Can’t wait for April reading your bitches on every bad play. You’ll ber joining all the lousy faithful who boo guys like David Wright at Shea on the first bad week, just like last year. By the way are you moving to Iran, China, Cuba, Venezuela… You aren’t a Metsfan. You are Omar’s little lackeyfan…..

  9. Kyle

The Mets NEVER booed David Wright, i never booed beltran, so you must be talking about those yankee fans who booed Arod.

  10. OMAR PADILLA

Hey slop: forget those blind bats. They think the team’s perfect, then when the season starts they’ll be the one’s throwing the racial slurs at Omar and Delgado and Beltran first time they screw up….. Notice how they say nothing bad about Maine but OP is a head case blah blah blah even though OP won more key games then the rest of the staff combined last year. Notice how last April when Wright had zero HRs they said it was because of HR derby. In Sept when Reyes was going bad they were saying he was out too late clubbing…. Until he made this Wash trade, heard all the time how he goes after his own kind…. Wait till the games start… Watch em all especially guys like Metsfan….. You and Keith sound like the only ones who played the damn game at a level higher than little league so screw em man….. I doubt these guys even played stick ball or mush, much less baseball…..

  11. OMAR PADILLA

Wrongo big Kyle… David Wright was being booed in April 2007 at Shea Stadium…. Go to MLB.com and watch the archivedgames from late April.. He is clearly being booed and it was talked about for quite awhile as you can hear, by Met and other team announcer… But I guess revisiinist Met history denies all…. Maybe you big guy never booed Betlran, but a heck of a lot of people at Shea sure did, didn’t they?????

  12. Sloppy

Hey, Padilla, You tell me to kay off and then you get into it!!!!! Question man. I know you work in inner city from your stuff last year. You work in the Bronx? Wondering because that Pitt gaurd Ramon came from South Bronx…. I grew up down there, but it was long time ago. I live in Western PA now and got to meet the kid a few times at Pitt games, and he’s a real good kid…. You get any of the credit?

  13. OMAR PADILLA

Hey slop…. If he’s a good kid I wish I could get the credit….. I do work in the Bronx near the Concourse. Last night the kids were talking him up big time with that 3 he made to break the Hoyas. I’m glad he’s good guy… I tell you what, that Coach Dixon, him and his kids they were family, all heart and fire and desire….. I was at the Garden for that game and that place all became Pitt fans, (except for the Hoya kids) Did you see Bobby Knight picked them to go all the way. I hope he’s right. Stats say they should have lost to Louisville, and Marquette and the Hoyas. There’s no stats for the heart those kids have.
How the hell a Bronx kid get to Western PA????

  14. scoopcoop

OP is a head case. It has nothing to do w/his Mexican background.

Pedro is one of the smartest pitchers around. It has nothing to do with being Dominican.

By the way, just to rile you guys up.

    OMAR MINAYA IS THE GREATEST!!!

No I don’t really believe that but since you insist that I do, go ahead and make some dopey comments now.

  15. sloppy

Hey Padilla, scoopcoop is having a breadkown and its still ST… Relax bro, we’re having fun….Anyway Padilla, when I left the Feds, I got together with a few other guys and we bought a freaking mountain out here from a bankrupt coal mine, and we built houses and live in the middle of nowhere. The best thing out here is there are no idiots like Metsfan living here. He’d probably be scared of the snakes.

  16. OMAR PADILLA

Hey slop,, I’m outta here til the season starts… Its hoops time…. You gonna keep fighting with these guys what you call them blind loyalists or something…. That’s what we try to teach the kids Not to be that, that’s exactly what the gangs want….. Maybe these guys are in the rich wilpon gang… wouldn’t that be special… I’ll say this about these guys. They are loyal… The Yank fans I’m around which is almost all of them, demand to win, these guys are happy with the choke because we won 80 something games. Yankee fans wanbted to tear up the FO when they had thast little 4 game playoff choke to the Sox. These guys love the choke….. Guess that’s why Met fans suffer. Deserve it I guess.
    Go Ramon, Go Dixon…..
Don’t mess with em too much I think that scoop guy needs to take more blood pressure pills you got him so riled up…..

  17. Mike C.

    Major concerns:

    – catcher can’t hit – second baseman’s health is a large question mark – first baseman should’ve retired at the end of 2006 – rightfielder isn’t an everyday player – a bushel of question marks in left field

    Lesser-but-still-significant concerns:

    – Willie is going to use Schoeneweis against righties against all extant logic
    – #5 starter position divided between a guy who is a year away and a guy who should be two years retired

    Huge upsides:

    – best #1-#4 rotation in the National League, at least – Wright and Reyes phenominal

    Lesser-but-still-significant upside:

    – Beltran phenominal, when healthy – strong bench as long as they’re used as bench guys – strong 1-thru-6 in the pen

  18. scoopcoop

The only guy having a breakdown is sloppy. How you can get so upset b/c Valentin was invited to camp is beyond me. Relax, it’s ST.

PS-Living in an abandoned cave is just how I pictured you.

  19. metsfan

we suffer as mets fans because we deserve it? that’s bullshit, I’m no racist as someone tried to infer in one of these posts, nor am I blind loyalist, however, I am a Mets fan. And until the games are played and I’m proven wrong, I’ll go into the season with positive thoughts about the outcome of the season as well as the joy that the game of baseball brings to me. I watch this game because baseball is one of the greatest games around and the history behind it all is quite amazing, intertwined with the history of this country. Also, not sure why that same poster said I should be living in Cuba or Venezeula or wherever, I adore my freedom, and its my right to stay positive about the season, as well as right off those fans that are already complaining about it. If you want to complain now, so be it, but you’re still pathetic for doing so.

  20. metsfan

I know you all long for the days of Art Howe, Duqette, and Steve Phillips, those days were much better, huh? screw Omar right?

  21. sloppy

hey metsfan-not… show your dictatorial stupidity some more. I sure do miss the days when my team was in the WS. Those were the Steve Phillips days el metsfan-not…, Thank you for proving me right by saying that you will be a two faced fan when the season starts. figures…. you can only bitch friom april-september… I guess the other’ guy nailed you about your bigotry or you wouldn’t feel the need to respond. He didn’t mention your name but you knew he was hittin on you!!!!... how come????... cause he was right….. in case you didn’t know every bigot says i’m not a bigot…. the louder you scream it, doesn’t make it go awat,,, dso keep it up metsfan-not.

  22. sloppy

Scoop: upset about Valentin??? I’m glad he won’t be on the team….I didn’t want him hurt… I just don’t want him there…. We don ‘t need a new Julio Franco every year. 2 old bench guys Easley and Anderson are enough…..

  23. sloppy

Mike C: The team is perfect…. Don’t you get it already….? No guy hurt or finished matters…. We have the best, the best pitcher in basebsll…. everybody else don’t matter. Ask Steve Carlton …..

  24. scoopcoop

To say Valentin is Julio Franco shows that your opinions are based on emotion not facts (just like your opinions on Church are based on your not likeing the trade, not on his abilities-case in point-anytime you can, you bring the subject up-even pointing out how he looked lost yesterday-is it possible that he may have been distracted since his wife just had a baby?-especially since they live in Viera?-you also did not point out that he threw out a runner trying to stretch a single into a double-a positive).

Franco was certianly not able to play anymore not b/c he was injured or out of shape but b/c he simply was too old to hit ML pitching.

Valentin, on the other hand, never showed signs that he could not hit a ML fastball. His issues are/were injuries. Of course those injuries are probably related to age. But his abilities to hit and play the field were not a question.

Again, however, he was not expected to be more than a possible fringe contributor (given his minor league invitee status).

It doesn’t matter anyway. He looks like he will retire.

  25. sloppy

if it doesn’t matter, why write a book. As for Churchy, he’s my boy by the way, if you haven’t noticed, , you are something else, you have a text messaging system which comes up with the excuse of the day for him….. ? wahwahwah… churchy is the 1st player in history to have to play ball days after his wife had a baby, churchy wasn’t knowledgeable when he made anto Semitic remarks, Churchy wasn’t understood when he didn’t get the chance to play… The Churchy wahwahwah society…. excuses are for losers, which you apparently really think he is because that’sa all you do for the dude…. “No excuses….no limitations” Jaime Dixon…. excuses are for losers… when the mets figure it out we’ll be contenders forever…

  26. mel

Can’t wait for the season….. Both sides have become total jerks on the Church matter. Can we have a Church moratorium until the first real game?

  27. scoopcoop

If your “no excuses” is your mantra, why don’t you point out some players that have had a bad day that you think are great?

I’ll be looking for that, but I doubt I’ll see it.

    Youv’e got Churchitis, sloppy.
