Mets Chat: Did you watch Pedro today?

Did you watch Pedro or college hoops today? If you watched Pedro, what did you think? It was only his first start of the spring, but even so it was interesting to see him work out of trouble.
Guy Conti was predicting 26 or 27 starts for Martinez this year, which is about seven or eight less that a starter would have if he made all his starts. He’ll miss a few starts, so you have to hope it’s a minimum.
It’s been a positive spring for him, but realistically it’s hard to project he’ll go wire to wire without a blip.

I thought Pedro looked alright. He’s got work to do but he should be fine. He is a real pitcher and will adjust his game and work with the tools that he has.

the thing is john, i don’t think ANYONE is predicting Pedro will go wire to wire, so you need to stop saying things like that as if it’ll be a disappointment, or some sort of letdown. We all understand, Pedro is a small guy, he might get banged up at some point, it happens, we undertand that, he won’t make 33 starts, but thats ok. I said at the beginning of spring, 28-29 starts and i’m sticking with that.
Unfortunately I was out watching a movie. It was a previously scheduled outing and you don’t want to get a 13 yr old angry at you.
I was happy to hear on the way home that Pedro had pitched well. Then I heard about Delgado’s injury and that brought me down a little.
Then I settled in to watch Tiger Woods close the deal. The Mets could learn a thing or two from him.
Metsfan Do you think you can dictate to everyone? You must dream of being a dictator… Cool it…
I scheduled my day around the game.
Pedro looked good. He got into some jams, but then got out of them. A good lesson for the young guys on how to bear down. Hope he feels good tomorrow and can go 5 innings next time out.
Can’t expect him to make 30+ starts. If he makes 25 I’ll be happy.
After the Big East is over Saturday night, need to rest for the NCAA’s. Congrats to the U of Pittsburgh and their coach. They play with heart and fire… They were smaller and had a lot less pure talent but won easily. Pedro would fit on that team. So would Jose. The rest of these guys, They’d fit on the other team, Georgetown.
Anyway, as for your post, I did watch Pedro. He was Pedro, bore down when he was in trouble. and looked better after the first like he does so often.
Metsfan: The letsgo guy might have been a bit strong but you do not own the site, so stop telling everyone what we “have ” to do.
I flipped back and forth between Pedro and UNC/Clemson.
I thought Pedro looked great. Yeah he got in a jam in the 2nd inning – but he looked outright NASTY at times.. particularly when he fanned Miggy C… WOW, what a nasty pitch. Miggy knew it too, made him look silly.
I believe Pedro will have a great season. He faced some of the best hitters in the game today in his FIRST spring outing, and he came out unscathed. I was actually VERY excited watching him today. His fastball was live, even at 88. He spotted it excellently. His change was lovely, curve was just all over, but I can;t say anything else negative about his stuff. Even the cutter he has been working in looked good and was effective.
I’d be willing to go out on a limb and say that if he stays healthy he will challenge Johan in the Cy Young voting.
I liked that Conti predicted that number of starts, because all we have been hearing from Pedro is that he is as good as ever. It’ll help temper the dissapointment when Pedro makes less than 30 starts. It should also motivate Pedro to make closer to 30 than 25.
I wouldnt be surprised if we got 30-15, and almost 400 IP from Santana and Pedro combined. If that happens and Maine and Perez repeat last year (30-20) it wont really matter how bad the 5th starters are, 90 wins will be a minimum.
I didn’t see it. I am very doubtful about Conti’s prediction but people have been underestimating him for, oh, 15 years now. Ever since the Dodgers bragged about keeping his brother Ramon when they acquired Delino DeShields.
25 starts, 12 wins would be good enough if Santana wins 18, JM/OP 15 ea and they get 5-10 b/w Elduqe and Pelfrey.
That gives you 65-70 wins from starters. Teams that get 65 wins from starters usually win 90+ as a team. Good enough for playoffs.
I thought he looked a bit rusty in terms of locating his pitches, although there were some times when I felt like he just aired out a few fastballs just because.
He said his curve was a bit off… I thought those 3 curves he threw to Maggs were pretty nasty.
I am not one for spring training meaning much, but for Pedro to go 4 innings against essentially the Tigers “A” team, and manage to shut them out left me kinda giddy!!! :-)
