Maine done for the day

March

John Maine’s work is complete. The numbers: No runs in five innings. Going into the game he said he wanted to improve his slider and it is something he accomplished.

“It is the best I’ve had all spring,” he said.

If you’re ranking the Mets’ rotation, Maine is third over Oliver Perez, who is still a heads-tails type of pitcher to me.

I kind of like how the rotation balances out with Oliver in the 3 slot-then you get:
    LHP Santana
    RHP Pedro
    LHP Perez
    RHP Maine
    RHP Hernandez/Pelfrey

considering their of the same caliber (Opie with better talent, Maine with a better head) they could flip flop, and still is nothing bad with going Santana/Pedro/Maine/Perez/Hernandez-Pelfrey

It would appear based upon the rotation setup in ST that OP will go before JM in the rotation during the yr. But if JM is healthy, I agree he has potential to be more consistent if not as spectacular.

You may be right with the right left thing, but I believe Maine is the better pitcher. Ollie has the talent but he is all over the place.

Once Pedro retires Maine is our #2.

Maine is clearly a better pitcher then Ollie. Ollie has a great arm, isn’t a great pitcher though. He’s too enamored by his arm to realize he needs to concentrate on every pitch, he needs to get his arm slot up on every slider, that he can’t groove fastballs. He has the talent, maybe even a little of the mentality, with the my stuff is better then what you’ve got, but he doesn’t have the work ethic, the concentration. Maine lacks there a bit too, but he seems like he realizes that, and wants to get better at it. Ollie just wants to go out there and wing it with that golden arm of his, which won’t fly. it’s find for a #4 pitcher, maybe even a #3, and he’ll pitch a handful of amazing games, but over the long haul, I like Maine’s chances of being a top of the rotation guy.

I have to admit, as enamored as I am with Ollie’s pure stuff, Maine has really been impressive this spring.

Heck, until he proves that he is the Pedro of old, Maine is probably the #2 pitcher on the staff. I know, the PC aspect and all give the nod to Pedro, but Maine right now is only 2nd to Santana.

ALso proves the pigeonholing of guys (#3/#4) is silly. Maine could easily end up being the mythical Ace the Mets needed before getting Santana, so who knows, maybe they will have “pocket rockets” soon! And if Pedro recaptures the glory years, 3 of a kind.

I agree. Maine may be better than Pedro. But Pedro is the veteran and he deserves the respect that a player of his stature is due. He was also the first step in Omar’s master plan to make us relevant again.

Also Maine was huge before the all star break and very average after that.

    I would prefer to go:

    Santana
    Martinez
    Maine
    Perez
    El Duque/Pelfrey

for the sole reason that you are guaranteed to have a lefty in every series. It’s a big advantage the Mets need to maximize.

The rotation will be all mixed up because there is an off day on the 4th day of the season. So it’ll be more like Perez, Maine, Santana, Pedro, Duque once they get into consistent games without off days.

I like them in that order, and I would also think its a good idea to slot Duque in between Santana and Perez when he comes back. It makes for nice variety and different looks.
