Just finished talking with Mike Pelfrey. He gave up two runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. He wasn’t happy, saying he was consistently falling behind to the hitters.
“I fell behind a lot,’’ Pelfrey said. “I wanted to be more aggressive. When you fall behind during the season they are going to make you pay for it.’’
Pelfrey said he didn’t challenge the hitters and tried to be too fine. He said it reminded him of the problems he had last year.

From the boxscore, it seems like a passable performance. Not great but not too bad. He only gave up 1 ER.
Perhaps Schneider will make a difference behind the plate.
Pelfrey never really got the chance to develop in the minors in my opinion. He needs another year down there to develop.
Lets see, the pitcher admits he sucks and blind stat lovers say otherwise….
Nick, He either needs more time in the minors or a shrink. Every start he says reminds him of last year but he either won’t or can’t do anything about it. He is not ready for prime time….again…....
I think he should start in the minors, but it is good to know he is realistic on how the majors will treat him.
That is a good sign.
it’s still all mental with Pelfrey, he needs to realize that even great hitters make outs and not great hitters make a lot of outs, no matter what. He’s treating every hitter like its Albert Pujols, he needs to just go after guys. Stop nibling at the corners, stop being so fine, stop thinking you have to make the perfect pitch every time.
Pelfrey is stepping backwards…. Last year, he waited until he made the team to start nibbling. This year he starts as soon as there is a chance he might make the team to nibble. And these statements that his starts remind him of last year are a horrible sign….....
dave… who is your # 5 if you want Pelfrey in the minors and El Duque is no more than a wiffle ball pitcher…..?
In a perfect world, he should get another half season or so of AAA under his belt, sure.
But, realistically, one earned run in four and two-thirds isn’t that bad for a number five starter in early March.
If he could get up to giving up similar numbers with another four outs by the end of April… two earned, one unearned in six innings, we’ll say…
That’s not a bad #5 starter. Better than giving a Lohse twice what he deserves to have the same ceiling as Pelfrey’s floor, we’ll say.
He pitches behind like last year ansd the last 2 starts when it counts it will be 5 ER in 4.2 innings and we’ll be begging for Sosa to replace him again…....
It was his 4th start. Was he supposed to go 5 today? Last time he was supposed to go 4 and couldn’t do it…...
I hope none of you guys are in the stock market. You’d be losing your shirts w/all the panic attacks you are having.
LGMG – I think you answered your question. Besides in April we do not really need a steady #5. To keep the other guys on schedule how many times will the #5 pitch?
I think in April Sosa can pitch a game or two while Pelfrey is in AAA and El Duque adjusts. In May if Duke is good we are set, else bring up Pelf.
scoopcoop; its easier to have “panic” attacks on things you can’t do anything about, and in reality don’t really matter to our lives…. unless we live near a Philly fan…...
dave: you think the mets were lying when they stretched sosa out “to get him ready to be the long man”?
