Mets Chat: Pagan staying

Not only is Angel Pagan not being traded by the Mets, but I think he’ll start in left field on Opening Day.
I know there is time left, but Moises Alou is out and that leaves Pagan or Endy Chavez.
It’s too soon to be thinking about a trade, but even if they were, Pagan for Coco Crisp doesn’t do it for me.

Pagan for Crisp makes no sense both from a BB perspective as well as financially. Mets are not gonna take on that contract for a guy who will be a 4th OF (unless Alou is done or Beltran is really not ready for some time).
Someone said in the last thread that Pagan is like Ryan Braun in the outfield.. Just wanted to bring what I said there into here, seems more appropriate.
Assets
Consistent singles hitter who’s very fast around the bases. Solid defensive outfielder. Surprisingly productive with runners in scoring position.
Scout.com
while he may be erratic on the base paths, Pagan is a standout defensivley in the outfield. He takes very good routes on the balls hit in his vicinity and despite playing a shallow outfield, gets to everything over his head. Pagan boast a strong arm as well, strong enough to play right field in emergence situations
Look, I mean… Pagan’s a total unknown entity… you’re not gonna drop him for a proven decent player like Crisp, just because he’s having a good early spring training?
I pull that trigger in a second.
And as I said in another thread, when Alou gets back, you bench Church and… that’s the fix. Easy peasy.
Ultimately? I’d love to see what it would take to get an outfielder out of the Angels, considering they have six major-league capable outfielders.
Rivera prefered but… if he’s expensive, Reggie Willits is certainly an upgrade over what they’ve got now in left-field options. Lotta upside there other than not a lotta power.
Though I imagine that there’s a certain value in not going for Crisp yet because the longer he’s stuck griping up a storm in the Boston clubhouse, the cheaper he gets.
wait a second, you’d bench Church in favor of Crisp? Do you just purposefully hate on our players that much? I bet if it was the other way around, you’d be saying the opposite, grass is always greener on the other side, but you’ll never admit that.
Not really.
I mean, I’d take Milledge back long before I’d take Crisp but… Church is a nice bench/platoon piece posing as a starting player because he was on the Washington Expos.
Milledge was an actual “our player”... Church is an Expo that Omar had the hots for because he’s very polite to the press.
If we can’t get Milledge back on reasons of front office insanity, lets at least get a player with some potential/upside in that right field corner.
Crisp has been rather pedestrian in recent seasons really.
“lets at least get a player with some potential/upside in that right field corner.”
What upside? He’s a year younger than Church? How can you rag on Church and call him a platoon player, yet call for the Mets to deal for Coco Crisp and start him in RF?
Sort of unrelated, but look at what Astros manager Cecil Cooper said about Willie and the team -from Adam Rubin’s blog:
“They’re going to be with the Phillies. They’re going to be the teams to beat. Atlanta’s going to be right there as well. But when you get a shot in the arm like that, (Johan) Santana, that’s pretty special to get a guy like that to lead your staff. And then you add a guy like (Pedro) Martinez, who’s healthy. You’ve got a couple of youngsters. And then John Maine has really come on. They’ve always been pretty good at the back of the game with (Aaron) Heilman and (Billy) Wagner. And they got the other kid back, (Duaner) Sanchez — the guy that had the microscopic ERA (in 2006). That’s pretty doggone good, you know? They can even afford to give up a guy. They gave up (Guillermo) Mota, and they’re still pretty doggone good there (in bullpen). Willie’s got a nice team and a great lineup. I’ve got a lot of respect for Willie and hope I can meet him at the end, battle for the National League championship.â€
JD – I agree. Coco is over-rated. As Boston found out as soon as he played there.
Will you stop with Angel Pagan. He is classic case of a 5th OF having a great spring training. Once April comes he will go back to normal, and do nothing. Pagan is nothing more than a 5th OF. I would even start Endy over him. He is a complete waste of time. Every year there is the non-prospect or not really good player that has the great spring. Pagan is the guy this year. He is nothing, and will be nothing when April comes.
um. I’ll take Endy any day of the week. When is this kid going t get the spot?
He’s earned it time and again. he’s had all winter to recover. come on coach give him a chance. he’s ready to play the field!
Coco has not lived up to his potential, but on the other hand
everyone’s fallen in love with Pagan…..based on spring training…...... and if you believe he is as good as he is playing then he should move to right when and if Alou ever comes back because Church is not impressive and you can’t say its just spring training because you’ve all fallen in love with Pagan over spring training.
Crisp will not be a Met unless they can find someone to take Show’s contract-and that has almost no chance of happening.
No one seriously believes Pagan will keep up his spring pace once the season starts. The point is to give him a chance to show what he can do given extended playing time.
Pagan’s OPS last year was higher than what Crisp put up in 2007 and 2006. And his career OPS is actually higher than Endy’s. He may end up to be nothing more than Endy lite, Or he may end up to have more pop in his bat. You really don’t know until he’s given the chance to show what he can do. So give him the chance. It’s not as if he’s displacing someone who’s more accomplished.
And for anyone advocating Endy, well he’s had health issues the last year. In addition to his injury during the season, he got hurt in winter ball which is why he’s seen limited playing time this spring. They might want to go easy with him for the first few months of the season.
What heck is the point of spring training?? Isn’t one of them to give players a chance to prove themselves? To shine and be given an opportunity in the regular season?
Why must we consistently call for ‘proven’ enitities like CoCo Crisp? He’s no superstar…
Give Pagan a chance! No one has a break out year until there given a chance…
Why do the Mets always have to look outside the team for answeres?? For once, can we take a guy who tearing it up in spring and see what happens????
Even if it only carries over for a month into the season, well that exactly how long we need him to produce until Alou and Beltran will be back…
Javaslinger
Hey Java slinger. I said that all last year. about looking in house.
I guess you guys all demanded Carp make the team last Spring!
nope.
In his limited time in second city Pagan has improved. In the spring he looks like he is not lost in the OF and he hustles on the bases.
For now I have no problem with Endy/Church/Pagan as the starters. Beltran will soon work himself into shape and be in CF. That leaves a nice young 4th OF with maybe journeyman Clark behind all.
When Alou comes back we will have a nice jolt of power into the lineup.
