Martinez sharp in simulated game

The reviews are good for Pedro Martinez’s second simulated game this afternoon. He threw 59 pitches in four innings, giving up a run on four hits. He topped out at 87 mph.

“I’m on pace for Sunday,’’ Martinez said of his next appearance, and first of the spring against major league hitters, when he faces the Detroit Tigers. “The main thing is that I feel healthy. My stamina was there. My strength was there to go four innings.’’

One of the hitters Martinez faced was Carlos Beltran.
“He looked good to me,’’ Beltran said. “His cutter was there. His speed was good. He was able to throw any pitch at any time.’’

Many thanks to Joe McDonald of NY Sportscene for the photo.

Let’s hope he looks as good when the games count. Maybe Maine will develop into that #2 that he was projected to be and Pedro can basically be stress-free as the #3. Then again, I sure hope that he didn’t look good because our hitters were bad.
