Santana seeks improvement

March

Johan Santana will make his second start of the spring in a few hours against Los Angeles. He gave up three runs in his Mets debut last Friday against the Cardinals.

“There are things I need to work on,’’ Santana said, citing his location. “It’s Spring Training. I’d rather leave everything here in Port St. Lucie and then when we head north, we’ll be ready to go.’‘

That’s Juan Gonzalez rounding third in the photo.

With the hoopla of his debut out of the way, I think we’ll see a more relaxed and effective Santana today.

After listening to his post-game interviews and reading a bit about him, I think you’re right.

Even if he doesn’t have a great game, I’m not worried. He’s had rough springs in 2006 and 2004 and still won the Cy Young both years. For someone like him who’s already proven himself, the spring is just a tuneup and a time to get back into shape. He’ll be ready when the season starts.

Guys who don’t have to be concerned about making the team, don’t worry about the stats. They just get their swings right, their pitches right. Even Maine is doing that this yr as he knows his spot is secure.
