The Mets say Shea Stadium will be smoke free this season. And, that includes the outside ramps.
Smoking has been prohibited in the seating bowl since 1995.
There will also be no smoking in Citi Field.
So what’s next people will have to get their tobacco fix by going smokeless. As Walt Garrison used to say “just a pinch between your cheek and gums for that tobacco flavor all day long.”
btw: does this mean sportswriters too.
All kidding aside this is pretty dumb and I don’t even smoke.
Hi John – I have a friend who reads the blog, but has asked me to post something for her:
I don’t think John would like my comment about the no smoking at Shea. It would be, they can’t smoke, but they can sit in the stands with their bottles of beer and then get behind a wheel of a car and maybe just happen to have and accident and kill someone, but that’s all right. Doesn’t make sense.
John – I agree with Nora – we all know too many people who drive after drinking – some kids and many adults who should know better.
However the beer and liquor company’s advertisements saturate our stadiums and arenas with income for the athletic businesses and of course an outlet for their beer and liquor sales.
This is another of the dark secrets of the success of pro sports – you can get all the booze you can pay for there.
Annie your 100 percent correct about alcohol.
My wise guy remark about smoking is that no one ever smoked two packs of cigarettes got behind the wheel and killed anyone.
I know its stupid but its true.
Thanks so much for agreeing with my point of view on smoking and drinking. Annie very nicely posted the note for me and I’m happy that she did. I agree with you about smoking and driving, but they are trying to do away with that too. Can’t smoke in your own car if a child under the age of 16 is a passenger. As my husband says, pretty soon you won’t be able to smoke except in your own home, but you can drink any where you want.
Smoking is disgusting. More parks should follow suite. Most people bring Designated Drivers to games. You can’t bring a Designated Atmosphere to a game.
xyrnax you are so right. There is no analogy to be made between smoking and drinking. A person can enjoy a few frosty beverages without annoying anyone but there is no way to keep your smoke confined to yourself. They are not the same. Drinking and driving is already illegal and the Mets discourage it. Also boisterous obnoxious behavior is already prohibited (even if not altogether effectively). The smoking ban is not stupid.
Wow: People here defend boozing it up. Beer guzzling people sitting behind you is about as bad as it gets a ballgame. They spill the crap as they get drunk and get more and more obnoxious by the minute. The smoke blows away in an instant in an outdoor venue. I guess the Wilpons forgot they aren’t building a park with a roof.
If they could get $7.50 a cigarette you can be sure it wouldn’t be banned.
Sloppy – I will never forget an experience I had at a New Years Eve Ranger Game at the Old Garden on 8th Avenue. A drunk behind me deliberately poured beer down the back of my neck. I was furious, smelly, soaked and vowed never to go back there again. Pleas to the usher got me nowhere. You’re right – these teams just want the booze income.
I’ll join in the fun..
Certainly drinking and driving is wrong. I don’t smoke and find it annoying when the smoke blows into you; not the same but similar if sonmeone spits and it hits you. Also if you have asthma you may earn a trip to the hospital. So no, just as an individual has a right to smoke, I have a right not to.
dave: That is fun???? Sounds like having smokers or drunks by others should be banned But there’s no reason why there isn’t a smoking area. And I don’t smoke. Keep the beer down and I’d be more pleased. They stop at the end of the 7th and guess who leaves. All the drunks who want another beer. Do they limit at Shea or any MLB park? Hell no…..
I disagree about the smoking, and I used to smoke. It shouldn’t be allowed. With smoking there is a 100% chance it infringes on another’s clean air. With drinking it depends on how much that person has to drink. Plus, people like to blame the booze whenever they act like jerks, when in fact they’re just jerks with an excuse now.
People drive drunk all the time, not just after a ball game. That doesn’t make it right. And how about a little personal responsibility? I like to enjoy myself and have a Bud Light at a game. However, I don’t get trashed and don’t drive after indulging. Should I, or any other responsible person, not be able to enjoy some suds at a ballgame?
Idiots spouting off about “Atmosphere,” smoking has been banned in the bowl for years. The walkways are outside and people smoking there in no way impacts your game-watching experience.
It’s just simple intolerance for other people by self-absorbed suburbanites who know no better.
Oh and if you have Asthma so severe that a brief puff of smoke while walking near a ramp causes an attack, you better not step foot on any Manhattan sidewalk without breathing apparatus.
“It’s just simple intolerance for other people by self-absorbed suburbanites who know no better.”
Intolerance? How about the inconsideration of smokers? You can’t not smoke for the 3 hours you’re at a baseball game?
“The walkways are outside and people smoking there in no way impacts your game-watching experience.”
They’re not “outside,” as they’re within the building that is Shea Stadium. What if someone wants to go down to the Mets Clubhouse shop and they have to pass cancer alley?
So Keith why are you more important than the fan that wants to smoke. You demand to enjoy your beer why shouldn’t the smoker demand to enjoy his cancer stick? Maybe you think you are behaving well with your Bud light, but maybe the person next to you thinks its gross. Why should they have to suffer for your enjoyment? Why can’t you go three little hours without your alcohol fix? I don’t smoke and I do drink, but I don’t drink at the park and I would rather be next to a smoker than a beer drinker. The smoker won’t spill crap on everybody, and he’s much happier smoking than not, while the beer drinker doesn’t know how his behavior is deteriorating by the sip. As one poster said, if Wilpon could get $7.50 a cigarette there’d be more ciggy vendors than Bud vendors.
Ghost, there is no comparison. There is no such thing as second hand drunk. It has nothing to do with my comfort level or enjoyment, it has everything to do with another’s health. Second hand smoke is harmful to your lungs. A smoker understands the cost benefit analysis and it’s within his right to smoke (like I said, I used to smoke myself.)
Smoking inherently violates another’s space in a way that drinking does not. And I never get drunk at a ball game (and rarely even drink.) At most I’ll have 2 beers over the course of 7 innings.
So the fact that someone else thinks drinking is gross is irrelevant. My g/f thinks hot dogs are gross, so should people not eat hot dogs? The main factor here isn’t that smoking isn’t eliminated because of personal distaste but because the second hand smoke actually infringes on another’s clean air.
One more thing. Drinking on its own is not inherently bad. It’s only bad if its abused.
You met fans fight about everthing. No wonder you are the most loathed fan base in the country. People like the Yankee fans more than you little metsie fans. You come to a site and defend drinking and cocaine use and try to convince yourself your pathetic lineup is really good. One of you even claimmed its not worse than any other in the division. Wow. That means it sucks because the Florida team has a AA team. ... You are a pathetic bunch. Reading all your stuff, you deserve the lousy, and very bigoted Ryank Church….He fits right in with the metsie fan base.
DC, I hope you enjoy Milledge, Dukes, Belliard, and Young. Bunch of model citizens you guys have over there.
Well, when you bring in bigots like Church you got nothing to talk about and why are your old overpaid junk all breaking down? Because they can’t take their PEDS no more…
one more thing little metsies. its quite intriguing how you can deceive yourselves into thinking that guys don’t play on other teams don’t play because the other orgs are dumber than your blessed omar. funny since you metsies think acta is a better manager than randaolph, but you think he was too stupid to see all of church’s hidden talents. maybe, just maybe, acta was actually smart enough to know that he could use him when he did and that getting 600 abs out of him would show all his flaws, many of which you will start to see real soon, that is if he ever takes the field again.
