Mike Pelfrey knows there’s an opportunity in Orlando Hernandez’s sore foot to make the rotation. After three scoreless innings today against Atlanta, that’s not just a fleeting thought.
“If there is a spot open, I’m going for it,’’ he said. “I’ve had opportunities here before, but I didn’t take advantage of them.’’
I read the post from the reader who said Chris Russo advocated trading Mike Pelfrey to Pittsburgh for Xavier Nady. I didn’t hear it, but if true, my response is: “They wouldn’t trade Pelfrey for Johan Santana. They certainly won’t deal him for Nady.’‘

good to hear that he has that confidence. He looked like a deer in headlights last yr at times.
he was dominatinto today. I read on a blog elsehwere that he broke a number of bats and was a groundball machine
2 broken bats, 5 weak ground balls. If you want to have any criticsm it would be that he did not SO a batter. But he won’t be a SO machine unless he gets better command of his slider/changeup.
Supposedly the lesson he learned from last year is that he needs to go with his best pitch – meaning his fastball.
Also as you can see by his comments he doesn’t make excuses about last year and puts his lack of production and non-position on the team squarely on the man looking in the mirror.
This is the type of attitude I believe his manager respects because that is the type of player his manager was.
hint.hint.
Call me skeptical…but Pelfrey looked great at the beginning of ST last year too if I recall. Remember when Grant Roberts was pitching so well during ST and the last few times he got lit up? (no pun intended :-) ) Let Pelfrey do it almost every time out, including the last few starts of ST before he gets anointed as the 5th starter.
Russo did suggest Nady for Pelfrey. Francesca(?) nixed that idea vehemently.. They had people calling in with suggestions for a righty who could playfirst and right field. Half the suggestions were lefties or retired guys, Francesca said you can’t trade a guy who will probably be part of your 25 man team to get Nady.
As for Pelfrey is it Ground Hogs Day? Is Bill Murray playing the part of Pelfrey? Heard the same exact words last year about his look, his attitude etc and his strong outings. Lets hope he isn’t “Butch” Huskey Pelfrey.
I don’t agree with Delcos about sosa being a useless part. Since wehave no depth in starting pitchers, who is next in line behind Pelfrey? Are we bringing Lima in from Korea or whereever he went?
Sloppy: I didn’t say Sosa was useless. I said he had more value than Schoeneweis.-JD
When Pelf got the job last yr, he then went into the tale spin in ST that spilled over into April/May. He did not recover until Sept.
Unless Lohse is in the Mets future, Pelfrey is gonna be the 5th starter.
The difference with Pelf is that last year he got lit up went down – did not do well there – and came back up and had modest success.
So he has been through the fire once and seemed to learn from it.
I agree that Sosa has value and considering our lack of pitching depth would be hard to give up for a useful player like X.
