Mets Chat: Counting out Duque Edition?

The Mets are saying Orlando Hernandez is working on his mechanics and there’s plenty of time. However, I’m starting to wonder whether the Opening Day roster might be a reach. If he doesn’t get in a game this week, the other pitchers will be two starts ahead of him. Plus, with the off days early in the season, they can go without a fifth starter.
The injuries are a concern because they are a reminder of how fragile a season can be. One or two key players going down can sink a team.
There aren’t many players who drew your attention every time they came to the plate as did Darryl Strawberry. You knew he could go WAY deep on any pitch.
These and anything else on your mind are on the table.

El duque is not a key player.
Pedro, Sanchez and Delgado are to me the key "injured" players.
So far, Pedro is the only one of the three who seems to be fairing better than expected. Sanchez looked to be doing pretty good (based on Willie's comments), but if Mets won't commit to his next outing, he is not.
I'm assuming Castillo and Beltran will be fine.
the way I see it, duque can be our schilling…Early reports suggest we'd be fine with pelfrey in the 5 hole, and that spot doesn't even come up until two times through the rotation…basically, if we have good starting pitching, he can take his time, or worse case scenario, come back later in the year as our "mid season pick up" food for though, even though duque wouldn't be content hanging around the minors, but pelf could go down and come back first sign of an injury to another pitcher…
I can't imagine El Duque making the regular season roster at this point.
Regarding Darryl, I grew up in Los Angeles and he played for a rival high school team (Crenshaw High). Rivals in the sense that we played them, but they kicked our asses regularly. I still remember watching him play—when he came up to bat our outfielders would turn around and head for the fences. Basically played him with their backs about 5 feet from the wall. And yes, he put it over all the time.

Darryl's been out of baseball for a while now, and I just looked it up – he'll be 46 on 3/12. Think he could still send one out over the apple? I also think that Reyes will benefit a lot from having Darryl around.
Was he a surprise addition to the staff?
I heard the Mets are shopping Scott Scho and/or Jorge Sosa, if thats true I see the Mets signing Lohse to a 1 year deal for 5 mil and putting El Duque in the pen whether he likes it or not.
I guess Darryl could not get a job with the Yankee's…I do admit it is nice to see him with the Mets in whatever role he serves. Mets need a player, or players to fill Delgado's absence. Mets need some kind of offense out of the first base position. I am not comfortable with an Anderson/Easley platoon. That will weaken the bench. What I do not understand is that Delgado has experienced hip pain during the off season, so why now is something being done? Shouldn't he have been seeing a MD and then getting treatments to rehab his hip? It is Spring with about a month to opening day, so let the healing begin to all the ailling players…Which are to many to list.
maybe they can tell the Brewers that Schoeneweis comes with Mota… You know like the supermarket…Buy one get one free….
I think the way the beginning of the season works out with off days, we won't need a 5th starter for at least a few weeks. Maybe this could buy Duque enough time to get ready and in the meanwhile we can carry an extra bullpen guy or bench player.
At this point I will trust El Duque to get himself together, maybe not for opening day but soon. If he doesn't Pelf can step in. Omar looks very smart not letting him go.
How is Andy H? He seems to be hitting a bit. Has he improved from the past 2 years?
Bryan has a point. If Delgado had issues in the offseason should he not have had it looked at then?
I'm not concerned about Duque yet. They need him on April 12th, not April 1st so there is still time to pitch in enough ST games. I'm more concerned about the idea of going with a less than replacement level player at 1B for large stretched of the season. Abreu or Valentin doesnt cut it for me…
I see the Mets carrying an extra reliever or bench player on the opening day roster, getting Pelfrey a AAA start on April 5th-7th, and getting Duque one last (extended) ST tune up on about the same dates. Then either will be ready for April 12th against the Brewers. I could also see them carrying Pelfrey as to not use up his last option year for one AAA start.
