Hello from one of baseball’s jewel settings, Vero Beach. The town is nothing special, but Dodgertown remains a throwback. The place has some wear, but is well maintained. Of course, walls of the press room and dining hall is a photo montage of Dodger history.
They old timers say the place hasn’t changed much since the Boys of Summer. The stars, of course, have condos and don’t stay in dorms anymore. Can you imagine Nomar Garciaparra sharing a room?
The Dodgers are moving west again after this year. When Sandy Koufax was in Mets camp last week he said it was time for a change, that most of the transplants who moved south from New York to follow the Dodgers had passed.Economically, the Dodgers’ sponsors are on the other side of the country. I understand the economics of this, but also appreciate the sentiment.

I saw a program recently where they recounted how Dodger town was the first to be unsegregated. They talked about how the black ballplayers could not eat/sleep in the same spots their teammates could. O’Mally went to the city council and demanded they integrate Dodgertown. At one point he stamped money with Dodgers on it and sent the players into town to make a point.
Later one of the players complained that their own stadium was segregated and the next day all the bathrooms and fountains were whitewashed erasing the segregation.
