On Tap Today: Maine goes for Mets

February

John Maine gets the ball today for the Mets. He won 15 games last year, his first full season as a starter, and knows the expectations are to at least equal that number.

“I want to continue to build on what I did last year,” Maine said. “I’m feeling fine so far. There’s always a little bit more adrenalin with the first start.”

Maine was an All-Star snub last year. If he pitches that way this season, and everybody else in the rotation pitches to expectations, the Mets should have one of the elite NL staffs.

Also pitching for the Mets: Duaner Sanchez, Scott Schoeneweis, Joe Smith, Steven Register and Juan Padilla.

Your Morning Paper: My story in today's Journal News

LAKELAND, Fla. _ Mike Pelfrey sat by his locker, his eyes half closed as he stared at a plate of scrambled eggs.

He mumbled hello, but it was clearly too early to talk.

It was shortly after seven yesterday morning and Pelfrey was waiting to board the bus for the two-and-a-half hour drive for his start against the Detroit Tigers.

“It was a tough draw,” said Pelfrey, who passed the time playing solitaire on his cell phone and struggled for a few minutes of sleep made difficult because the seats wouldn’t recline enough for his 6-foot-7 frame.

“But, somebody has to make it, and the sixth guy in the rotation better than anybody else.”

Maybe next year, if he’s in the rotation, he won’t make that trip.

Most definitely he won’t if he becomes the pitcher general manager Omar Minaya envisions.

“He’s someone we wanted to keep,” Minaya said of the Mets refusing to include Pelfrey in the deal to Minnesota for Johan Santana.

“We feel he could be one of the best young pitchers in baseball.”

As the Mets’ first-round pick in the 2005 draft _ the ninth-overall selection _ the expectations have been high for Pelfrey, making last season’s 0-7 start tremendously disappointing, but educational.

“When I look back and try to reflect on the season, half the year I was pitching behind in the count and I got punished by it,” Pelfrey said.

“Last year was the first time in my life I’ve had to handle adversity. The game has always come easy for me. I’ve been able to throw the fastball and get by with it.”

That’s easy in college; hard in the major leagues.

Minaya said the Mets didn’t give Pelfrey much run supportĀ  _ that’s true with only 20 runs in his first eight starts _ but in the interest of accuracy, he conceded Pelfrey tried to be too fine with his secondary pitches at the expense of his fastball.

And, once behind in the count, hitters could sit on the fastball.

“A lot of young pitchers make that mistake,” Minaya said. “When he came back he was much more aggressive with his fastball.”

Pelfrey pieced things together mentally while at Triple-A New Orleans.

“I’m a power pitcher,” Pelfrey said. “I should throw my fastball more.”

When he returned, Pelfrey was masterful in giving up one hit in six scoreless innings, Sept. 1, at Atlanta. He gave up two runs in his next start, a victory over Houston.

Overall, while riding his fastball, Pelfrey won three of his last four decisions.

“He has more confidence with how he finished last season,” manager Willie Randolph said. “He’ll feed off that.”

Establishing the fastball was his mentality in yesterday’s 4-2 loss in which he gave up one hit in two scoreless innings.

“I don’t know if it was dominance, but I thought I did some things right,” Pelfrey said. “I located the fastball. I was more aggressive in the strikezone.”

However, just being aggressive won’t be enough to make the Opening Day roster. If his right foot is sound, the rotation’s fifth spot will go to Orlando Hernandez.

Although Hernandez has yet to throw batting practice, Minaya isn’t concerned.

“We’re not going to rush him,” Minaya said.

Pelfrey will get the first call when the Mets need help. Spring training for him will be about giving Minaya a sense of confidence when he picks up the phone.

“I don’t know if there is even a spot open,” said Pelfrey, playing the diplomat.

“I want to be on this team and I want to help them. If it comes to the worse, I just want to make their decision difficult.

“I think the chances of the whole staff going the whole year without something happening is slim.

“If I don’t get it out of spring training, sometime during the year I’ll get my opportunity. No way I can be mad. They’ve given me opportunities and I haven’t taken advantage of them. That’s the bottom line.”

It’s good to see the games finally start. The first two weeks have dragged.

Mike Pelfrey looked sharp today and I think he’ll have an impact eventually this season. I just don’t see Orlando Hernandez holding up over a full season. I also wouldn’t be shocked if Pedro Martinez missed a few starts, either.

If anything else is on your mind, let’s hear it.

PODCAST: Pelfrey sharp

February

pelfrey-mikeaction.jpg

Mike Pelfrey was impressive this afternoon, giving up one hit in two scoreless innings against the Tigers.

Pelfrey entered the game wanting to establish his fastball and challenge hitters in the zone, which he was able to do by falling behind only one batter. For this early in the spring, he flashed dominance.

Listen to Pelfrey as he spoke with us in the Mets’ clubhouse.

Mets take early lead

February

Sacrifice fly by Ramon Castro gives Mets 1-0 lead in the first. For the record, Ryan Church walked to load the bases.

Mike Pelfrey pitching for the Mets. He’s one of the pitchers I’m most interested in this spring. He’ll start in Triple A if Orlando Hernandez is healthy, but I have a hunch he’ll get more than a few starts with the Mets this season.

Pelfrey did a lot of feeling around with his secondary pitches early last season, but challenged hitters more with his fastball when he came up later.

Sad day: Myron Cope dies

February

Very sad to learn Myron Cope died. I covered the NFL for awhile and he befriended me. Always made me feel welcome when I got to Pittsburgh. And, there was no one funnier to sit down and share a beer with.

I truly nice man.

Yeah, yeah … I know you don’t want to hear it, but it’s cold here. Temps in the low 40s. The Mets are taking batting practice in the cages inside. Sandy Alomar said the forecast is for 39 with the wind chill.

Only in Florida

Greetings from Highway 60 on the way to Lakeland. Florida has the sun, but it can also be a creepy state.

I call Florida the set for “America’s Most Wanted.” Here’s proof. Just past a road sign: State Prisoners Working.”

Immediately thought of “Cool Hand Luke.”
