are you freaking kidding me? Santana doesn't get paid to pitch well in spring training, and that's that's f'in bottom line. If you are worried about this, you probably are psychotic and need to go on some medication or else you really have no inclination into anything to do with baseball, or just just a plain old idiot. SANTANA GETS PAID TO WIN DURING THE SEASON, SRING TRAINING IS WORTH LESS THEN THE FECAL MATTER THAT EXITS MY REAR END EVERY MORNING.

Annie, you say "This guy is supposed to be an award winning veteran – he should be able to pitch better than this."

Pitch better than what? Like he would be pitching in June? August? September? It's FEBRUARY 29TH!!!!! You can't expect that level of performance in his first spring training start, not after having not pitched in 5 months. In fact, I doubt Santana did had that level of expectation for himself.

Annie, ST means absolutely NOTHING for veterans, unless they're coming off of injury. In that case they need to reestablish themselves.

Remember when everyone was worried Alou was washed up last season? Well, he wasn't. Didn't mean he would stay healthy, but the guy can still rake.

ST, for vets, is just about getting your work in, playing with some new pitches, etc. It's not about wins and losses, or even performance.

You miss my point - this is not a rookie or a young pitcher. This guy is supposed to be an award winning veteran - he should be able to pitch better than this. I'm not on the ledge - but maybe he should be.

Want to bet that Pedro has a better start?

Annie - come off the ledge. Your expectations for this start are ridiculous. Santana didn't 'need' to do anything other than get on the mound, face real opposition, and get in his 45-50 pitches. These starts are about increasing arm strength and stamina, working on the the quality of his pitches, and refining location. It's not about striking batters out; it's about getting in-shape for a season that is 4 weeks and 3 days away.

ST is for getting ready for the season. The stats and wins and losses don't count.

Sloppy - C'mon, he didn't need to pitch perfectly, he just needed to keep runners off the bases. For a pitcher who had a lot to say during the negotiations, this was a lousy start with his new team.

That is, you can count on unknown talent (at least not alot of it) if you need to sell advertising $$ to run your TV network (among other things).

So you are gonna see even more known talent on the Mets sprinkled in w/a few yound guys. That's the way it is.

I'll say it again. if you don't like big contracts become a small market team fan.

The $$ are only going to get bigger for players that play in the big cities b/c if they fill seats in the stadiums and in front of the TV the teams make more $$$.

I guess it's too early for me to say that I didn't want Santana - and his big contract - here in the first place. Obviously now we need to throw in a bunch of pitchers to try and clean up after him.
