A lot is expected out of John Maine this season. Sure, he would have liked to have pitched better, but it’s the first game. He’s not somebody I’m concerned about.
Duaner Sanchez, on the other hand, I am. The last time he complained of being sore after throwing he had surgery. He hasn’t pitched in a year-and-a-half, so my confidence level on him is low. Real low.
Johan Santana tomorrow.
Your thoughts on any of this?

If Sanchez is out for 2-3 more days then I’ll be concerned. For now, it might just be caution. It might just be soreness since he has not thrown to hitters in so long.
Of course, Mets do say that a guy is just sore alot and then we find out the next day or two that he is flying back to NY for tests.
JD, do you see Sanchez on his way to the airport?
Case in point. Pedro was out of the complex on Monday for “personal” reasons. Then I hear Jon Heyman on the Fat man and puppy dog show talking about Pedro going for a colonoscopy. It turned out to be nothing.
But Mets PR machine thinks that keeping things quite for a day or two will somehow make an issue go away. But if it really is an issue, you can’t make it go away. You only delay the inevitable.
My thinking on injuries and the Mets is to think the worst. Yeah, yeah, that’s negative, I know. But you guys have to know if you follow the Mets that they underplay injuries until they place the guy on the DL. I’m not saying that’s what’s going to happen, but I wouldn’t be surprised. Would you?-JD
I think it is possible that they are being extremely conservative with Duaner—who was admittedly very pumped up and threw 26 pitches in a game situation for the first time in 18 months.
Do you guys remember Pedro commenting that they should be careful about “rushing” Sanchez during Spring Training last year—a week or so later he felt that pop when he suffered his break and that was the end of his season?
Yes, the Mets may downplay injuries, but boy, I would want them to go easy with Sanchez at this point, plenty of time left in ST for him to get ready.

I’m so pissed that the game is a 1 PM start.. I guess they don’t care about the kids.
John, the Mets track record of hiding and basically lying about injuries gives good reason to expect the worst. Plus they said Dauners’ legs were tired after he pitched, so why clam up now if it was his legs?
I’ll be worried if he doesnt pitch on Friday.
The Man: its the spring, why wouldnt the game be at 1:00 ?
I am not worried now. If he gets in a game sometime this weekend everything is cool.
If he doesn’t pitch this weekend, it’s strike one.
Wow!! I turn on this site for Mets stuff and I think I’m on Hardball with Chris Matthews.
As for the Mets, I am concerned about Duaner for 2 reasons. If he was indeed training as hard as the Mets said then general soreness shouldn’t have been a problem. And the Met history on injries is pathetic. From Trchsel’s back surgery in 04or 05 to Pedro to Sanchez last year, they just don’t let it out for whatever reason. I am therefore also concerned about the legs of Castillo and Beltran. Not being ready now is not a good sign.
“But you guys have to know if you follow the Mets that they underplay injuries until they place the guy on the DL.”
JD, you’re right on the money. I can’t stand it when they refuse to just DL a guy and let him get healthy. Instead, as was the case with Beltran’s quad in his first season here, they let the guy try to play through it and he never gets healthy.
And Sloppy, training and pitching against live batters are two different things. There’s a reason why the old expression after an injury is “he has to get in game shape.”
I never pitched Keith. They put me in the outfield when I was a kid….so I’ll trust you. The new post says he’s pitching today so you know your pitchers!!!
I’m still really concerned about the aching knees we have keeping 2 starters out of action, and I’m not concerned about El Duque. Sosa/Pelfrey will move up for however long it takes even if its all year.
I used to pitch in HS. I also played football. During baseball season I would spend time in the weight room and training for football, so I was in pretty decent shape, but the day after pitching a full game I was sore as heck.
Omar, with all due respect, I think it is you who has the severe myopia. It was only, a few members of one committee in Congress who spent all of about 6 weeks investigating Clemens’ opposition to the Mitchell report, The Republicans didn’t even read the depositions and supporting documents. It’s simply silly to think no other business got done in Congress because of this limited investigation by 1 committee.
This either/or red herring argument put up by those tolerant of the PEDs abusers is the biggest canard. It’s totally naïve and disingenuous to make weak arguments like this, and it speaks of someone with a poor conception of reality.
And stop putting words into my mouth. I never said getting Clemens was one of the country’s high priorities. Again, another false argument on your part – a strawman argument that undermines your position. It is frankly insulting for you to say that I don’t care about this country’s societal ills or other important issues.
But if you think locking up Clemens is going to end PEDs talk to the Olympics,
Locking up Clemens is not meant to eliminate PEDs totally from baseball. That will probably never happen. Locking up Clemens will act as a deterrent for anyone who wants to cheat in baseball or lie to the feds.
I want Roger Clemens in jail to help teach my kids, other people’s kids, other baseball players, and adults around the country that lying and cheating don’t pay. And I feel sorry for you for your failure to see this important lesson.
Again, this idea that there is only room in one’s moral vocabulary for one outrage … or only time on the Congressional schedule to address one type of issue … is the most illogical fraudulent excuse given by the Bonds-Clemens apologists.
The above reply to Omar was meant for the Clemens-Willie post. Sorry about that.
