Mets take early lead

Sacrifice fly by Ramon Castro gives Mets 1-0 lead in the first. For the record, Ryan Church walked to load the bases.
Mike Pelfrey pitching for the Mets. He’s one of the pitchers I’m most interested in this spring. He’ll start in Triple A if Orlando Hernandez is healthy, but I have a hunch he’ll get more than a few starts with the Mets this season.
Pelfrey did a lot of feeling around with his secondary pitches early last season, but challenged hitters more with his fastball when he came up later.

Dont forget.. PELFRY was the star of 2007 SPRING Training.
Then the season started, and he went 0-7
I never trust spring training stats.
The only time i’m going to care how Pelfrey pitches is the last start or two in Sp.Training. By that time the hitters will have caught up and he’ll be more likely to face better hitting. (Yes, I do realize that the Tigers have their A lineup exc.Timo, but as I said pitchers are ahead of the hitters at this point) I still think what’s best for Pelfrey is to start and pitch most if not all of the year in New Orleans. They rushed him enough as it is.
I read where one of the lessons he learned last year was to trust in his best pitch, which is his heavy, sinking fastball.

I totally agree Steve. He definitely need some more innings under his belt, but he also reached the bigs too easily. The Mets need to make him work for it.
I love it that he came to spring ready to force a battle for a rotation spot, but unless Duque starts the season on the DL, there should be nothing Pelfrey does to get him on the 25 man roster. Make him go down to NOLA with a fire in his belly to make it back to New York. This way, he goes down to AAA, dominates and forces the Mets to bring him up. Once up, I would bet he would be up for good.
