Watching Duque

February
26

Just finished watching Orlando Hernandez pitch. He’s taking his time getting ready, just like he said he would. Soft, soft and softer, he threw. Sometimes, you swear the ball is going so slowly you think it will fall out of the air.

The joke was Pedro Martinez asked Duque to throw next to him so he’d look fast by comparison.

He says he’s fine, but would it surprise me if he opened the season on the DL? Nope.

Given the lack of a need for a 5th starter until April 12th it would probably be in the Mets best interest to put Duque on the DL due to him being behind schedule, and to have Pelfrey make a start at AAA to be in line for April 12th in hopes that Duque is ready to assume his role at that point or Pelfrey steps in.

Plus they could keep an extra bat or arm around for 10 games. Or they could keep Steve Register around until the Rockies have locked in thier 40 man roster and cant take him back.

I like the idea of Register but I’m not familiar with the rules. I thought the team that takes a guy in the rule 5 draft has to keep him on their 25 man roster the whole yr. So I don’t see the relavance to the 40 man Rockies roster.

JD, I keep saying this is why the Mets keep touting how Pelfrey looks so good.

The Mets PR machine will be in full swing if ElD is not ready for opening day.

JD, speaking of taking their time.

Has Pedro thrown BP? When is he scheduled for a ST game?

scoop: If they take him off 25 man roster. They must first offer him back to his original team. That team can take him back for half the price or say we don’t want him. Or they can make a trade that will compensate the original team and then can send him off 25 man roster. The only way the 40 man of the Rockies would come into play is if they wouldn’t want Register any more than the other 40 guys, then they’d say no, but if 40 maqn is filled they could take a guy off and put register on… Since they left him off originally, how much would they want him anyhow??/
