Pedro Martinez is open to pitching another year, but said the Mets would need to initiate contract talks. He is entering the final season of a four-year, $53-million deal signed prior to the 2005 season.
“I’m not going to approach them,’’ Martinez said this morning. “I would talk if they approach me.’’
Martinez, 36, missed most of last season following rotator cuff surgery, but was effective, going 3-1 with a 2.57 ERA in five starts. He also struck out 32 in 28 innings, an indication he’s not throwing junk.
However, sometimes pitcher doesn’t hit the wall after surgery until the second year, and Martinez said he has to prove he’s healthy.

I don’t have any deep felt concerns on Pedro’s health. I believe that he and the Mets did a good job of waiting until he was ready last season and not rushing back. I also believe that after pitching through a variety of injuries the last couple of seasons Pedro will try to last out the season with pushing himself.
Pedro’s stamina has to come into question until he can show that he can pitch every 5th day. The gave him extra rest last yr.
If he can pitch every 5th day, it means he is healthy.
Put me down as “moderate”.
He’s got a major injury under his belt but he looked good end of last season and he’s a smart competitor, he’s the kind of guy who’ll do everything he can to get back on the field and stay there.
I thought he stuck his toe in the water last year. If he looks healthy in the spring and has no issues in the first month I will be happy.
