Be careful what you wish for

A common spring training sight is for a young pitcher to overthrow and be wild in an attempt to impress the manager. More than a few veteran hitters have take one in the ribs because of this.

So Carlos Beltran asked Willie Randolph to have him face a veteran with control. Johan Santana was the choice. Would have been perfect, except Santana got him on the triceps.

“Cool!?!’’ Beltran said in mock anger when a reporter pointed the ball stitches on his arm. “Would you like one of these?’‘
