Based on production, Perez doesn’t deserve five years.
But, based on the history of the market, his agent, his age and being lefthanded, who doesn’t believe he won’t get five years?
If OP has a similar yr 3.5 ERA, 15wins I’d bet he would get 5 yrs. He could be the 2nd best pitcher available, after CC.
From a career perspective he would be better off staying with Mets where there is going to be at least one if not two pitchers better than him on the staff.
But that won’t matter to Boras. If OP goes to a big market team and is expected to be the ace, I think he’ll be in trouble.
5 yrs/65M if he goes 15-10, 200inn, 200SO, 3.5 ERA.
It really will be best for the Ollie to stay here, given the reasons mentioned above, as well as the fact that is seems as if Peterson has really gotten through to him. Boras however has always been all about the money, regardless of how will the player will fit with his team (see: A-Rod 2000, 2007).
All we can hope is that the Mets make a competitive offer (I can’t see why he wouldn’t) and Ollie makes the choice for himself.
For the time he has been here and if he has a decent yr this year or at least a good first month the Mets should lock him up for 5 yrs at 10-15million/yr.
The agent probably won’t let that happen and we will have to bid for him. He is a head case, but has a live arm and when focused is lights out.
If he leaves who will hop over the lines for us?
What crap gfrom you all:
1. He doesn’t deserve 5 years. Why? He deserves whatever the market offers.
2. He’s a head case. Based on what what? What has he ever done to warrant that/ Nothing. He’s wild and inconsistent from start to start doesn’t make him a head case. I love it. Just love. The guy doesn’t tote the company line and goes to arbitration and he gets attacked by this so called “fan base”.
3. It will really be best for Ollie to stay here: Why? Because its best for the Mets. What’s best for Ollie is for him and his family and his agent to decide.
I like Ollie and hope we can keep him, but who can blame him for wanting the big bucks? When he hits FA I just hope he’ll look at not just the $$$ but also his situation (admit it, Peterson really did help your career; it’s better being the #3 on a winning team than the #1 on a losing team) and pick the Mets). As for being a headcase, he’s not whacko but he needs to harness his emotions to help him instead of let them hurt him. Look at Pedro: He’s also an emotional player but he’s always in control.
“He’s a head case. Based on what what? What has he ever done to warrant that/ Nothing. He’s wild and inconsistent from start to start doesn’t make him a head case.
Sorry, got to disagree. He loses his control sometimes based upon his emotions not his mechanics. Several games like the game in SF where someone makes an error in the field and he loses his concentration and gives up hits or walks that should not happen. In fact I believe Ollie gave up more unearned runs than anyone else in MLB. His emotions run high and he needs to control them better. Remember the next to last game? Ollie was most definetly the closest to getting into a fight w/the Marlins. I could point to many other times. To me, that is being a head case.
However, he is very talented. I remember one game where they showed behind the catcher some of his sliders. They must have moved 2 ft across the strike zone.
“3. It will really be best for Ollie to stay here: Why? Because its best for the Mets. What’s best for Ollie is for him and his family and his agent to decide.”
For sure it is his decision. But I think it would be in his best interest to stay w/the Mets if he has goals beyond $$. Jeff Weaver looked resurrected in STL w/Duncan as his pitching coach. But Boras went for the bigger $$ the follwing yr and Weaver pitched poorly again. I hope OP, who appears to be a good kid, thinks about wanting to be good and not just wanting to get the extra, extra $$ and go where it turns out to be a disconnect b/w him and the team (ie., Pittsburgh).
Being inconsistent does nopt make one a head case. It makes him inconsistent. A head case is a stetement indicating that there are problems with the guy. Baseless comments. yoiu want him to be more consistent fine I agree, but to say he’s a head case is a very unfair comment to make to a guy who has never been accused of anything that is not above board. On one hand you say he is a good kid then don’t call him a head case. Call him for what he is inconsistent. Call him for losing concentration. But he is being called out unfairly. Why? Becuae he went to arbitration. I wonder if the Philly fans are calling out Howard for getting 10 mil in arbitration. Nope, I bet they are pissed at their FO for not working things out.
