Alou doesn’t see this as the end

Last year at this time Moises Alou wanted to have a good season so he could come back this year. This afternoon he talked about playing another year or two. His goal is 500 at-bats, which manager Willie Randolph thinks might be a little optimistic.

“I’d love to get over 500 at-bats,’’ Alou said. “If I do that I can have a great season. And, if I do that the team can have a great season.’’

Randolph said he must resist the temptation to go with the hot hand when it comes to Alou and better pick his spots to rest him.

If they can get 350 AB that would be great, especially if 100 or so of those are in Sept/Oct.

I have my concerns with the 2008 Mets, most regarding health issues. A number of people are coming off injury and Carlos Delgado is coming off a BAD year. All could come up roses depending on what happens during spring training.
    My concerns are
    1. Carlos Delgado — can he come back?
    2. Duaner Sanchez — can he return to 2006 form?
    3. Pedro Martinez — 2007 was only 5 games.
    4. Damion Easily — injury recovery – has he recovered
    5. Endy Chavez — injury recovery – has he recovered
    6. Matt Wise — his 2007 soured after hitting a batter. My concern is he mentally tough enough?
    7. Moises Alou — how many games will he miss?
    8. Orlando Hernandez – how many games will he miss?

Dispite these concerns, I still think the Mets will win more than 100 games, perhaps more than 110. I have no concerns about Jose Reyes, Luis Castillo, Carlos Beltran, or Ryan Church.

    Wow.

    110? That would be great.

Vern. You can’t have that many ifs, ands and buts and expect to win 100 to 110 games.

I would peg the Mets in the low-to-mid nineties in wins.

I’ll pull 94 wins outta the blue, I suppose.

    Amazing pitching, anemic offense.

Reyes and Wright can hit… Beltran and Alou can hit but have trouble staying healthy… Castillo and Delgado used to be able to hit five years ago and it isn’t five years ago… Church and Schneider never could hit.

    Yeah.

Two “yays” two “maybes” two “has-beens” two “never weres”.

That ain’t a hundred win offense.

If Alou gets 300 ABs, it’s pushing it.

Delgado has hit well for 10 years and had an off year where he was terrible at the plate and still gave us 24 hr and 87 rbi’s . Considering everyone’s love for LM and some optimistic projections that he will have those numbers this year if only given a chance, I do not understand the venom toward Carlos for having those very same numbers.

I believe he will be better this year and give us 30 hr and about 100 rbi’s. If he can do that and Alou can stay relatively healthy our offense will be alright.

Castillo has hit about 300 since 2002. Exactly how are these two washed up?

Castillo’s knee looked shotsky last year, shotsky far beyond surgical intervention… yes, hitting .300 is nice… if you can’t stay healthy or move on the bases, though, that only goes so far.

Delgado just keeps getting injured and when you’re in your middle thirties that equals diminishing returns.

I thought Castillo’s D was fine. He hits for avg and seemed to solidify #2. I thought the contract was a bit rich and long for him too, but for 2 years at least the contract is a good one for us. I hope Gotay sticks around and gets a chance to make an impact on this team. He is young and needs to learn but has potential.

We will find out about Delgado soon enuf. I want him to succeed. We have enough questions on this team without having to worry about him. If his bat is good no one will care about his D.

110 wins? That’s more optimistic than Alou getting 500 at bats.
