Five years ago, Mets owner Fred Wilpon said the goal was to play “meaningful games in September.’’
His reach has gotten longer.
“We expect to be in the playoffs and go deep into the playoffs,’’ Wilpon said. “I think that you feel a strong confidence in this camp.’’
Despite the optimism, Wilpon said jobs wouldn’t necessarily hang in the balance if the Mets fell short. He also said, “it was not ever a consideration,’’ when asked if he contemplated an overhaul after the collapse of blowing a seven-game lead with 17 games remaining.

I guess you have to take his word on that considering that no changes in staff were made.
But I wonder if things go poorly w/o any major injuries if Willie gets another chance.
I think Omar’s job is safe…but Willie’s isn’t especially if his failure of leadership repeats and continues with head scratching moves on the field. For him to stay, the Mets will have to at least make the playoffs and play well in the NLDS.
EL: Boy do you have it wrong. The failure in leadership was entirely on the part of the GM. He provided Willie with a 4 man pen, gave him guys like Lawrence/Williams/Chanho to be the 6th starrter, and nobody to sub for a tired Reyes and a slumping Delgado. It took him until August to find a bench guy better than Franco. Failure is in providing players who can’t do the job and despite it Willie almost pulled it off.
There were major changes on the staff in the offseason. We lost a great first base coach and sometime pinch runner.
