The Mets just called to say they’ll have a conference call this afternoon, presumably to announce Johan Santana passed his physical and it’s a done deal.
Congrats to Omar and the Wilpons for doing what I hoped for and what I figured they wouldn’t do. Now we can be excited again, like we were when we got good in ‘69 and added Clendenon to finish the job, like we did in 85? when we got Carter to finish the job, and like we did in 98 when we got Piazza to bring back respectability, and like we did a couple years ago when we got Beltran and Pedro.
Now don’t think Omar is off the hook when he makes his next bad move! but no criticism when he’s back on the good Omar roll he came here with.
Now its time for the GIANTS to end this Boston sports domination. Super Bowl Giants 2008. World Series champs Mets 2008, Champion Knicks oh well two in a year would be good enough!
I don’t know what to think – enormous amounts of money for lengthy periods of time for athletes make me wary.
Pitchers have fragile egos and bodies and are only part time players.
The team still has the two Carlos’ who could be doing more, a shaky bullpen, and the need for a power hitting catcher.
I’m really in a wait and see mode.
John – Were you the one who whispered “Spygate” into Senator Specter’s ear?
To Annie (RE: SpyGate): Can’t say I was. But, it wouldn’t bother me at all to see those Cheating Patriots taken down a notch.
Sure, it’s only football, but the same argument against steroids and gambling applies here: Is what we are seeing legit? Let’s say the Patriots illegally picked something up that enabled them to beat the Eagles. What then?
Football is the top viewer sport in the country. It is a billion dollar industry. If the Patriots cheated and it helped them win, that’s damaging. It throws so much into question.
Personally, if I were Goodell, I would have forfeited their game against the Jets on top of the penalty.-JD
Anne….you are one of those who continue to pick on Carlos Beltran…he’s fine and plays well..hits well and fields well…guess he’s just not LOUD ENOUGH so New Yorkers can’t relate to him?
There’s always skeptics no matter what Wilpon, Minaya and the Staff do….
Schneider may not be the strongest hitting catcher but he can throw a whole hell of a lot better than Paulie.
Jerry Grote wasn’t your power hitting catcher but he caught his pitchers well and was a good defensive catcher. Sometimes that’s a fair tradeoff.
Beltran has won 2 silver sluggers awards and two gold gloves in 3 yrs w/the Mets and was in the running for MVP in 06 until he cooled off in September.
What does he have to do? Win a couple MVPs too?
PS – NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell knows he is in trouble. His late father was Senator Charles Goodell (R.NY)
Both MLB and the NFL get into trouble with Congress because of their anti-trust exemptions. They are forever pushing the limits – Specter (R.PA) had a group before his committee a couple of years ago when the NFL network was first formed. It will be interesting to see Commissioner Goodell appear before Specter’s committee – a man who served with his father.
Someone I know once said:
“If you want enterainment, go to the movies or watch wrestling. But, that’s not sports.
With sports, people want to know if what they are watching is real.
That’s the essense of yesterday.”
Roger and Scoopcoop-
Baseball is a team sport and individual awards or honors don’t mean anything if your team doesn’t win.
“Not loud enough” whatever do you mean?
We do need an ‘edit’ button – I meant Jeff.
I think the point that was attempted to be made was that Carlos Beltran is doing all he can do to help the Mets win. Its not his fault the starting pitching was slacking, the bullpen was tired and worn out, and that the manager is a clown.
What Goodell and the NFL should be in trouble for is the way they treat disabled former players and treat their fans like dirt. Night games in Green Bay in mid-January?
If the Patriots win going 19-0 is a great feat..pretty much unthinkable (although contrary to most people I feel the salary cap helps teams that are strong..contenders find it hard to add a missing piece). If the Giants win, we will be flooded with a gazillion Eli Manning commercials in the first week alone.
Except for the one year he played hurt (72 I think), Grote was never the bad hitter Schneider is. He had no power, but then again the HR leader on the team rarely had 30 then).
The manager is not a clown. You may not like him as a manager, but he is far from a clown. You will see something much closer to a clown in the Bronx this year.
Nice idea about the forfeit JD but I’d much rather see them lose there perfecto tomorrow instead!
