Snag on number of years could lead to negotiating extension

February
1

The Mets want to give Johan Santana five years; the franchise pitcher wants more. Maybe as many as eight, Steve Phillips told me.

There’s a 5 p.m., deadline to get a deal done, but that’s easily enough changeable. Since both teams want to get this completed, the Twins could grant the Mets an extension to continue to negotiate with Santana.

They’ve gone this far. Hard to believe they won’t get this finished.

The Met position, if Phillips is correct, is stupid for 3 reasons:

    1. They knew before making the deal that this guy wanted more than 5 years.
    2. They get contracts insured at least for part of the deal.
    3. The longer term contract is in the team;s interest as the terms become a bargain the last several years. For example, Beltran’s cost seemed too high but he now makes less than Hunter, who is in my opinion a lesser player.

On a side note, what was the reaction in Minnesota? If it was very bad could the Twins try to save some PR and not grant the extension?

They’ll get it done by 5 PM. The Mets and Santana would be rolling the dice, not only does the Twins have to agree but so would the Commissioners Office.

One thing that’s absolutely true of any business dealing is that deadlines are arbitrary. They can be moved if both parties consent to moving them. To my mind, “pitchers and catchers reporting” is a far more meaningful deadline to work on an extension.

The realistic difference in years here is probably six versus five guaranteed years. I imagine the Mets are trying to buy their way out of that kind of commitment to any pitcher.

man, i can’t deal… jsut do it already

  5. OMAR PADILLA

Delcos: Are there rules to this time limit or is it just part of a deal btween the teams? If there are hard rules and Bud Selig needs to be involved that’s a whole different game than if its the Mets/Twins/Santana.

  6. Dan Gurney

If there are rules Bud will waive them for his buddy Carl Pohlad..the guy he got an illegal loan from several years ago.
It doesn’t hurt to try to get Santana to agree for 5 years but the Mets should realize it is as unlikely as me marrying Scarlett Johannsen. Santana has The Big Chance to make A Lot of money and the level was set by Barry Zito last year.

Now you know why when the news came out I said on this blog don’t go crazy just yet because santana still has to sign. Let’s face it, this is the Mets not the yankees. If for some reason this deal doesn’t get done than the Mets will truly be the laughing stock of all baseball teams.

  8. MisterMet845

Yup this is the Mets, the team that pulled the trigger on this trade to begin with. You know, the team that wasn’t afraid to add $30 mil a year to their already record $218 mil payroll. Let’s face it, this is the Mets, not the Yankees. That’s why this deal gets done.

  9. OMAR PADILLA

Santana is in as good a position as an employee ever was in. If he gets the deal done he’s by far the richest pitcher in history. If the Mets piss him off he gets 13 million from the Twins and becomes a free agent next year when he will become by far the richest pitcher in history. Talk about your win/win situation.

  10. scoopcoop

If it doesn’t happen I hope fans lay the blame on the right people-The Wilpons-not Omar.

That for no other reason is why this will get done. The Wilpons will not want the fans to be irate at them and they won’t want the rest of BB to laught at them.

  11. scoopcoop

Santana is not in a complete leverage position.

He and his agent have to weigh the possibility of leaving 150MM smackers on the table and risking injury in 08.

  12. scoopcoop

The funniest reason this might get done today might not have to do w/anything involving dollars, yrs, etc.

Bill Madden from NYDailyNews stated that Santana told the Twins he wanted to go on vacation (back to Venezuela) right after the SuperBowl weekend. So he told them to get the trade done by Tuesday. So now he might tell his agent get it finished today just so he can see family, etc. before ST.

  13. OMAR PADILLA

Yes Mr Scoopcoop he has that risk, but the Wilpons have the entire franchise at fanbase to lose now. I don’r see how even the most ardent of defenders can defend them if they blow this somehow. I doubt even the Wilpons will blow this, but if they’ve been taking lessons from their friends in Baltimore…..

Santana also has the possibility if this dies that another team will jump in knowing what the Twins will take and pretty much for sure what Santana is demanding.

PS: You are right about Omar on this. He made the deal but he can’t give away all that money on his own.

  14. Houston Mets Fan

I hope in the end Santana pushes Pedro to be the pitcher he can be. Pedro looks kind of fat in the pics I have seen of him. This should drive him to get in shape and be the ace he can also be!

  15. OMAR PADILLA

That is an unfair attack on Pedro. This guy absolutley killed himself and his body to be able to pitch at all year. He spent a year getting in the best shape of his life and recovering from very serious injury. That is terrbile that you think this guy with more fire and drive to win then anyone would need a trade to get him going. You won’t get more out of anybody then you will get of Pedro. Last September while Wagner was nursing an injury and Glavine was planning his return home, he begged to start on short rest even though it could have very well finished him off. If there’s anything left in Pedro’s body we and the Mets will get all of it plus more.

  16. Mr Met

As far as an extension on the deadline goes, Santana is in complete control of that.

Remember, he still has his no trade clause. If the Twins try to play hardball with the deadline, Santana can ‘discourage’ them from doing so.

    Omar P

I hope the Wilpons stay far away from Angelos. He might be the worse owner in BB. Maybe only Dolan is worse in all of sports.

“Santana also has the possibility if this dies that another team will jump in knowing what the Twins will take and pretty much for sure what Santana is demanding.”

I think that possibility is there but is remote.

But if it did happen and the other team becomes the Yanks, The Wilpons will lose alot of the fanbase including yours truly.

  19. Steve (The Original)

Scoop: If they lose Santana to anyone, i’m a Red Sox fan.

  20. OMAR PADILLA

If they blow this, it doesn’t matter what happens to Santana, they lose the fan base big time.

  21. OMAR PADILLA

I was being sarcastic about the Orioles. What a self destruction of what was a great franchise.
the Dolans are real bad, the owner of the Lions in football, the Clippers in Basketball… Lets hope we don’t have the Wilpons in that group.

  22. scoopcoop

Heard on radio Santana wants to be Met so he won’t push envelope.

Maybe he really does want to go on vacation!!

  23. Franco

LD.. c’mon man.. anything new flying around??! Need our crack..er…. updates

  24. Steve (The Original)

Franco: Best place to go for updates is Metsblog.com Best place to post is here.

  25. Tweeter Gammons

Don’t worry about these negotiations Mets fans. Steve Trachsel is still a free agent and ready to be the rock this rotation truly needs.

  26. The Coop

Personally, I would not be surprised if a deal was done now, just now negotiating the terms of his luxury box, family tickets, parking space, etc. This is Super Bowl weekend, folks. Nothing will get announced (officially) till next week. Press conference, tuesday, mark my words.

  27. Steve (The Original)

Coop: They have to announce if there is a deal in place by the deadline unless it is extended, so they will have to announce officially if the deal was made pending a physical.

  28. Steve (The Original)

Latest news from Heyman: 6 years 22 mil per year with an add on of about 7 mil for this year that would bring the deal to $152 mil.

  29. OMAR PADILLA

Steve The Original is right. Metsblog steals stuff from lots of web sites, saving fans the time and energy, but they don’t have a thought of their own since they are owned by SNY, and there are too many posters there. This is the best place to post Met stuff. Right size, lots to debate with familiar names that come and go.

  30. Steve (The Original)

Omar: They just entered their deal with SNY about a month ago. They don’t “steal” anything. They tell you the source when they post it and they don’t take it as their own. It’s really the best place to be kept up to date on the Santana news. And they did have the Met players rumored to be traded long before anyone else did.

  31. OMAR PADILLA

Steve the orignal: They may not be stealing because they do offer up the sources, but they have no information that is their own, and I do think that they are afraid to criticize the Mets. Here, the guy says what he thinks, and lets us have our debvates. As for getting the players right, they listed so many different alternatives over the months they had to get it “right”. I find their site to be no more than a google with a lot of pro Met editorializing and a lot of bad bloggers. I now only look at the front and never go to the comments. Whatever, it doesn’t matter because we both apparently would rather post here!!!!!

  32. dave

The Mets offered to paay $40Mil for a player who never pitched in the majors and no one had really seeen. This without the cost of actually signing him.

The also are rumored to have offered a lesser pitcher 5 years $75 mil. So 6 years and $150? I do not see the problem here.
