The Mets just reached an agreement with Johan Santana. Now all that’s left is for the franchise pitcher to pass a physical with a press conference next week at Shea.
The team did not release any figures, but roughly 90 minutes into a two-hour extension, a club spokesman released a statement: “Negotiations have been completed and the player will take a physical.”
The sticking point was the contract’s length, with Santana wanting a guaranteed sixth year.
Initial reports had Santana asking for $150 million over six years. However, ESPN reported agent Peter Greenberg came out of the gates seeking $168 million over six years, which did not include a signing bonus or the $13.25 million he was to have made this season.
The Mets countered at $21 million a season for five years with an option for a sixth season. The compromise position was the Mets giving the sixth year if Santana lowered his price to $22 million a season.
Things are happening quickly now. I’ll get back to you with more details as I get them.
