Johan Santana’s debut has come and gone and it wasn’t good numbers wise. My concern is none because it’s his first start.
There was positive news regarding Pedro Martinez, but Orlando Hernandez said he’s still not feeling well mechanically. Faulty mechanics can lead to arm problems, which is why the Mets are paying close attention to this.
These and any other topics are on the table for discussion.

Highlights from Willie Randolph’s postgame press conference this afternoon:
-ON JOHAN SANTANA: “I thought he threw the ball well. His stuff was crisp. The first time out I don’t think a whole lot about (the results).”
-ON DUANER SANCHEZ: “He’s still trying to feel his way (back).”
-ON ORLANDO HERNANDEZ: “He’s a little stiff. He needs work to get the kinks out.”

Johan Santana said the Cardinals were looking to jump on him early and that’s what hurt him this afternoon.
Santana said he was happy to get the first one out of the way, and admitted to being a little excited. He also said, “I have a lot of work to do.”
Listen in to Santana’s press conference.

Well, it wasn’t exactly the stuff of legend. Three runs on four hits in two innings for Johan Santana. He’ll throw a few more pitches now in the bullpen.
Santana, who took the mound to cheers, heard nothing but silence after Juan Gonzalez crushed a three-run homer in the first inning.
It’s spring training, so nobody should be worried. Check out our latest poll.

Moises Alou drove in the second run on a fielder’s choice grounder and error by second baseman Aaron Miles.

As the Mets PR staff was clearing out the clubhouse, Pedro Martinez yelled: “Johan is about to put on a show out there!!!”
Martinez was in a good mood this morning.
“I’m always happy when I’m healthy,” Martinez said. “I’m a happy camper.”
Martinez said he felt “great,” after throwing batting practice this morning.
Orlando Hernandez, meanwhile, threw a 25-pitch batting practice and said he’s not feeling it.
“It’s not good, yet,” Hernandez said. “I don’t feel 100 percent. My mechanics don’t feel good.”

MLBPA chief Don Fehr said if Congress opts to go after Roger Clemens on perjury charges, the former Yankees pitcher should not expect help from players union.
“That’s beyond our jurisdiction,” said Fehr.
As far as determining whether Clemens would be able to salvage his reputation, Fehr said Washington isn’t the best place.
“I think Congressional hearings are not well suited for trying to decide questions of credibility, especially in circumstances like this,” Fehr said. “That’s best left for private litigation.”

The players are in a meeting this morning with union chief Don Fehr.
Should last at least until 9:30. Think I’ll go get some breakfast.
See you later.

It was a 1-2-3 interview with Duaner Sanchez just now.
ME: Duaner, how are … (Here’s where he cut me off).
DS: I’m fine.
ME: Are you pitching today?
DS: Yes.
He turned away before I could ask what was sore.
As I was writing this Omar Minaya walked by.
“It’s general soreness,” Minaya said. “He hasn’t pitched in awhile. He should be sore.”
