Santana poll: Are the Mets now the toast of the town?

January
29

Assuming this doesn’t fall apart and the Mets don’t blink on the money, the Mets now have the best pitcher in the major leagues. But does this make them the best team in NYC? Are the Yankees still better or is it too soon to tell?

Vote in the poll and don’t forget to post your thoughts.

To be honest, I'm not sure which NY team is better now…

But with this move, Mets are definitely the best team in NL East now, maybe in NL!

I am a die hard met fan but unless I missed something, the yankees have made the playoffs 10 straight years and they seem to bring good players up from there farm system. Last year hughes and jaba saved the yankees. What I am trying to say is unfortunately the yankees will always be the toast of the town.

The Twins are playing us for chumps?
    Ha, ha.
John D, why do I suspect you wrote that so you could get a rise out of us?
Seriously, though, happy new year to you and everybody else.
Thrilled we're getting Johan Santana – but I'll firmly believe it when I him putting on a crisp new home white, pinstriped or black jersey bearing "Santana 57" and flash bulbs popping off like crazy and Omar Minaya smiling, shaking his hand and in making the official announcement uttering the phrases, "at the end of the day" and "know what I'm saying?" about 500 times.
Seriously, though, all you Omar-haters need to step off. The man got it done. We just had to be patient.
No Livans or Kyle Lohses or Bartolo Colons here.
And if you think about it, we basically traded Lastings Milledge, Carlos Gomez, Philip Humber, Deolis Guera and Kevin Mulvey for a starting catcher in Brian Schneider, a major defensive upgrade over the last two years, an upgrade in right fiels in Ryan Church over Shawn Green (Church's doubles would've led last year's Mets)and arguably the best starting pitcher in the Major Leagues.
    Not bad.
    Not bad at all.
Plus, after getting his knee fixed, Luis Castillo will be with us all year and we're getting a healthy Duaner Sanchez back (the true Mets MVP in 2006, if you ask me).
    Looking good, y'all.
And yes, I'm now living behind enemy lines in Savannah. But I'm making the first trip to Atlanta the first weekend in April.
Oh – and talk about a good omen: I went scuba diving the other day in Key Largo, FL and what was the name of our boat?
    The Santana.
Feels good again to puff our chests.
    Let's Go Mets!

Until Mets win a couple WS, the Yanks still own NY

Gee John, you've sounded cynical this off-season.

I think you are dying for real baseball like the rest of us.

Again, who cares if the Mets are the best team in New York, I just want them to win the division. Look what happened last time when we overlooked that. One goal at a time, my friends…

When I first saw this headline, I thought JD was asking if the Mets were the Mets were the best in the NL or (finally) in the NL East. Are they the best team in New York? Who Cares? I just want that pennant!

I wasn't sure if trading prospects would be worth it (check out my minor league blog updated much fore frequently throughout the season: http://360.yahoo.com/eldertrunk]), but this was not a high price to pay. As the poster above noted, it softens the blow of the Milledge trade!

Yes we are the toast of the town.

This is the deal of the year in baseball. The best pitcher to the best team in the NL.

This brings our rotation from mediocre to one of the top ones in the NL. When healthy at the beginning of the year we will have Santana, Pedro, Maine, Ollie. A very nice 4 rotation ( with El Duque or Pelf @ 5 ). We will win many games in April and May. Hopefully the pitching will be so strong that by June the papers will be talking about the Mets the way they were in 06.

As for best in NYC? I do not know. We have our holes as this blog has dwelled on for months, but this is a good way to kick off the year of the rat. We leave the year of the pig behind us and start the new cycle.

The Mets got better than last year and the Yankees stayed the same and are a year older and now have a no nonsense manager. It should be interesting. I think the Steinbrenners will be investing in aspirin before the 2008 season is over from butting heads with Joe G.
