The Bandwagon

January
22

Saw a car today with two bumper stickers. One for the Yankees and the other for the Patriots.

There was enough room for LSU and Celtics stickers.

Does this count as a "blog post?" It is like two sentences. How are you paid for this crap?

  2. Mike C.

    A Yankees fan?

    Blindly front-running?

Sir, you have officially blown my mind.

  3. GD

what the heck else is there to talk about?? -I was amused by it, would you rather Johnny post "will the mets get santana?" everything else has been talked about to death

  4. Stillsane

Maybe Rafael Santana could throw out the first ball at a game, or, Carlos Santana could play a concert at Shea? Would at least make for fun headlines and the Mets could honestly say they got a Santana to come to Shea.

As for jumping on the bandwagon, at the local mall,(yes, we have those in Rockland along with even running water and indoor plumbing), there was a run at every store on New York Giants shirts, hats, etc… I had to laugh when I walked by the rack outside the Sporting Goods store and they had a clearance rack of Mets shirts with Glavine's, and Matsui's (must be old stock) name and number on them. Funny, I did not see any LoDuca or Mota shirts.

  5. sloppy

Hey, why shouldn't Delcos post about bumper stickers. There hasn't been any real Met news that's good in about 2 years now. Should he write about the brick sales at the Wilpon gold mione, I mean Citi Field?

  6. Annie Savoy

There is baseball news this morning though, since Chuck Knoblauch didn't respond to the letter sent by the Oversight Committee, the US Marshalls in Houston will be serving him with a subpoena. Not a great start for Chuck…........

Also, Willie Randolph was interviewed by Chris Carlin on WFAN the other night – audio is probably available there. They were at a Yogi Berra function in Montclair.

  7. Steve (The Original)

Since this thread seems to be about nothing, here's my question….

I'm a huge Met fan….I HATE the Yankees
I'm a huge Islander fan….I HATE the Rangers

I'm a huge Jet fan….but I don't hate the Giants, as a matter of fact I root for them as well.

Is it the same for any of the Jet fans on the board and if so, why does there seem to be no animosity between any Jet and Giant fans I know?

  8. John from Boston

I'm a Giant Fan (trapped in Pats country) and I have never had any real hatred of the Jets like I do the Islanders and Yankees. I don't usually root for then, but I really don't root against them either and I'm not sure why.

  9. scoopcoop

"why does there seem to be no animosity between any Jet and Giant fans I know?"

maybe b/c the jets and giants are not really rivals since they are in different conferences and don't play very often.

All I know is 1-I hate the 2 wk space (instead of 1) b/w the cnf championships and the superbowl; and 2-I hate the month of Feb b/c there is FB or BB and I can't play golf.

Speaking of golf. I might get alot more rounds in this yr since there might be alot less interest, for me, in watching the Mets.

  10. Gumpwine

i'm with scoop. february was great a long time ago when we got a week off in grade school, but now…
also, i am a jet fan, my father is a giant fan and we both root for the other team as long as they are not playing each other. probably has something to do with them both being bad for years in the '70s and neither one having an owner who wants the headlines all to himself. Mara and Hess/Johnson have more class in their little toe than either von steingrabber or the coupons have in their whole bodies.

  11. sloppy

In football we seem to hate the teams in our division only. I don't know why. But I know growing up in NYC when the Dodgers and Giants were there, we all hated the other two teams no matter who we were for, and there was no inter league play. Maybe because there were a bunch of NYY/NYG and NYY/BD Series in the 50s.
Out here in WesterPA the Steeler fans don't hate the Giants or the Pats, but they sure hate the Bengals/Browns/Ravens, just like Giant fans hate the boys/Eagles/Skins. Pirate fans only hate the Phillies and want to be in their division so they can hate them more. Apparently they had quite a rivalry in the late 70s when the Mets barely existed.

  12. pray4giants

Giants and Jets are never playing at the same time. When the Giant game is over you see the Jets and vice versa. If you see a team week in and week out, you start knowing who the players are and rooting for them That's why Dallas has so many fans from the time they were always the afternoon game.

Also, baseball, basketball and hockey teams are playing at the same time as their competitors. They are in direct competition for our attenion, therefore, you have to choose who you watch and root for. You may even have to argue which game to tune into.

Even though I've been a Giant fan sine 58, I still had a thrill when the Jets won SB III.

  13. Steve (The Original)

Scoop: Only thing that goes against what you're saying is that Met fans have hated the Yankees wayyyyyy before interleague play began, so it was really no different than Jets/Giants. And I hate two weeks in between the Super Bowl as well!

  14. Taylor

Tony you idiot there is nothing going on in baseball right now. He gets paid to cover the Mets for the paper. This blog is just gravy. Sheesh!!

  15. Steve (The Original)

Can anyone tell me why Omar is not making a play for Kevin Mench? He would be the perfect complement to Church and fill in for Alou when he gets injured. JD, what's the deal with Kevin Mench?

  16. dave

I agree. There are still players out there who could help us and at this point are probably very cheap.

  17. Taylor

The Mets don't have any helmets big enough for his head so they are staying away from him.

  18. scoopcoop

steve, most Mets fans came originally from Giants and Dodgers.

Since those fans hated Yanks, I'd guess it was passed down thru the yrs.

Anyway, three wks or so for pitchers/C.

and maybe a Santana will be there?

  19. clm

Steve (The Original) – I Am the same way. I am a Jets fan and pull for the Giants. Also, I remember in '86 many Yankees fans hating the Mets. My cousin hated them so bad that he pulled for the Red Sox that year. Funny story he called me when it looked like the Mets were going to lose it big time in game 6 to gloat. When I called him back after "the ball gets by Buckner" he wouldn't take the call.

I don't really hate the Yankees but I do hate the way many of their fans act. It is like the Carolina Tarheels' fans here in Carolina – They just act like it is owed to them. There used to be a saying here for fans of NC State and Duke when it came to Carolina – I'd pull for the Russians if they were playing Carolina. And that was during the cold war and because of the fans attitude.

  20. stick

Taylor, not true about the helmet. He could share one with Castro.

I have been touting Mench over on the other blog. He isn't perfect (OBP maybe?), but if he can also play 1B, he would be a great RH stick to share time with Delgado and CHurch, plus he could fill in for Alou and actually replace a lot of his offense.

THe bench is actually the one area of the team I think is poorly built. I like the bats for PH, but I worry about the defensive coverage. They can fake it for 1 game or so, but (except for 2B) there isn't anyone that can really cover a spot, other than Endy, who can't hit, and shouldn't play for an extended period of time.

Gotay is a stretch covering SS, and most people want to see Reyes get a little more rest this year. Not sure how good he is at 3B, but DW isn't sitting much.

Problem is, Easley and Anderson are pretty much PHs at this point, and iffy as a 1B (Anderson). Castro/Schneider are bench bound when the other starts. And Endy is the only actual OF on the bench.

I really worry about what happens if someone goes on the DL. They would have to call someone up to play every day, unless it is Castillo that goes down.

I guess Easley has to stay healthy and show that he can handle the OF back up. We shall see.

  21. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

Only three NFL teams failed to make the playoffs at least once in the 70's. The Jets, the Giants and the NO Saints.
As A Jets fan the Giants were just as bad and since they almost never played, who could hate them.
My worst nightmare of a Super Bowl would be the Pats and the Cowboys. I will always hate Americas team.
I hope the Giants beat the bleep out of the Pats. Boston fans have just become so full of themselves they need to knocked down a notch.
Also as a Ranger fan in the early 70's the Bruins were the team we really hated. No Islanders or Devils to kick around
    back then.

  22. sloppy

    Stick:

If you get Mench or a Mench like guy, which sounds good it does two more bad things. It means Gotay is not on the team. There are only five spots on the bench with a 12 man pen.
    Anderson
    Castro
    Easley
    Chavez
    Mench (like)

So you have absolutely no coeverage on the left side of the IF.

Secondly it would prove how bad a trade Minaya made getting a part time player for right field when he had nobody to platoon with. If they don't get get a righty for right field do you want Easely or anderson out there for 50-60 games or more because when Alou gets hurt you either have Chavez every day in LF or Church everyday in RF or you bring up Gomez again before he is ready, and teams will be bringing in lefties galore to face this lineup. With a slowing Delgado we would even be weaker versus lefties yet. Now I know all the Omar defenders are going to say how do I know Alou will go down. Well, he hasn't played a full year year since 2004 and age, I don't believe is on his side in this steroid testing era.

  23. scoopcoop

Three wks or so for pitchers/C.

  24. OMAR PADILLA

Read that article scoopcoop: If Minaya gets the Twins to deal for Church then I won't change my name to Tom Coughlin Padilla!

My suspicion is that the Twins don't see any deal that doesn't severely turn off their fan base. They're building a park but if fan base is turned off they won't sell it out, and they haven't figured it out yet.
But, their owner is rich like the Wilpons, so its another screw job for fans, just not in NY.

  25. scoopcoop

Rocky Mountain News, Mets close to a deal – Livan Hernandez.

I like it only if it is a couple of yrs deal and it means that El Duque is going to the pen and Santana is coming here.

I hate it if this is intended only to replace Pelfrey at the back end of the rotation.

  26. letsgometsgo

/is the Rocky Mountain News the new hometown newspaper of the New York Mets?

If they make this move I hope they bring back Roberto Hernandez and bring up Anderson Hernandez and make the new hitting coach Keith Hernandez… That would be more interesting than the off season's been!

  27. scoopcoop

"If they make this move I hope they bring back Roberto Hernandez and bring up Anderson Hernandez and make the new hitting coach Keith Hernandez… That would be more interesting than the off season’s been!"

That would also make the Mets SNY broadcast even more interesting as Keith would complain non-stop about how his luggage would be get lost amongst the other Hernandez's.

  28. scoopcoop

Cuddyer and Morneau were signed to long term deals today by Twins.

I take this as a sign that Santana is not long for Twins since it would seem they wouldn't have money to sign these guys and Santana.

Where he lands who knows, but hope for Mets.

  29. dave

Isn't Roberto Hernandez like 100 yrs old?

  30. mel

Roberto Hernandez may be a little too young to play for the Minaya Mets….

  31. Billy

John, While I enjoyed your blog during the season, your off season postings have been a big disappointment. Peter is doing a much better job then you over on the Yankee side…If any of you Met fans need to get some news on the team, I found a great blog that is not only entertaining but informative…METSBLOG.COM…This blog has also signed a deal with SNY, giving it alot of credibility. Another blog almost as good is metsfever.blogspot.com…good stuff. Sorry John, love your Mets coverage, but maybe you should let someone else
    handle this blog…...

  32. Stillsane

    Billy,

Appreciate the names of the other blogs to look at, but, what big news has John missed covering about the Mets? The signing of Rincon, or, the talk of Livan? While I certain respect everyone's right to have an opinion, I personally would not be too tough on John's coverage of the Mets through this blog when there has been very little news wise to work with these past few months.

  33. sloppy

delcos' coverage of the mets this off season is probably too much, not too little, based on what minaya has done this winter.

  34. OMAR PADILLA

Just read the Delcos article about Santana and Livan, and it totally convinces me that Minaya must go NOW. If Minaya would be saying I want these young guys to be part of the Met future that would be fine , then there should be no discussions with the Twins about Santana. The fact that he claims he wants these kids yet can't stop talking to the Twins shows that he has no plan, and has no idea what he really wants to do. And as far as development goes he puts all these kids in the so called fast track, but when there are no more steps to go except the bigs he keeps the Alou's and goes after the Livan's to force them to stagnate so next year we'll hear the same BS we heard this year about Milledge that his value dropped. Of course it drops when you stagnate and Omar you have developed a way to stagnate them all.

  35. stick

Sloppy, i understand you points about the bench. Basically, you were agreeing with me! In my scenerio, they would end up losing Endy, unless they were willing to go with a 6 man pen. So, Easley it will be.

Basiclaly, CHurch is not a platoon player, and I wasn't advocating that. I just wanted to see someone better for the games he does rest, or if Alou had to sit, or Delgado needs a break. That is a lot to ask out of Easley.

Omar P, I don't think Omar M is being inconsistant. He feels that adding an Ace makes a difference, and if that doesn't happen, he will keep the prospects and build the team. But, he is willing to bring on a s/t vet for 2008 to give them time to develop.

Basically, he isn't willing to write off the season by starting too many young guys, and they need some depth for when duque or Pedro goes on the DL.

I personally think they should skip Livan though and run with what they got. Now, if they could pick up someone like Snell, that would be fine!

  36. Spiderpig

I'm a Jets and Giants fan, just can't seem to pick between them.

  37. letsgometsgo

stick, church may be all right vs righties but he totally sucks vs lefties, no power, no average…. Minaya bought a platoon player in an era when platoon players are hard to support.

sloppy, i think you got the attitude about right but i think it basically applies to virtually all teams except the 2 beasts in the am. east.

  38. scoopcoop

    Bedard to M's

I guess it is Santana or

    L Hernandez….the Mets savior for 08.

  39. stick

lgmg – Well, to some extent, Millege was a platoon guy too, based onhis splits. And at least there aren't that many tough lefties to worry about.

I think they got the bench screwed up by bringing back Easley. A true OF/1B would be better to serve his role (RH PH power guy), since Easley doesn't do much in the filed, and they have other guys that can cover 2B.

  40. stick

Interesting about Bedard. Since he had 2 years left, either the Ms blew them away, or IMO quite likely, the Orioles were worried about him staying healthy for another year.

Wonder if the Mariners will look to extend him right away?

  41. letsgometsgo

i think milledge is too young to know what he is or will be. at 29 you know church only hits righties. yes we have a screwed up bench. a couple good pinch hitters yes, but not nearly enough flexibility. anyway, we will be seeing lefties brought up from independent leagues to face us if delgado doesn't bounce back and alou goes down again.

  42. scoopcoop

    stick,

given O's sad management, I'm sure M's will make out well in this deal.

  43. Gumpwine

given the articles being written that say that if the Mets do not land Santana they will sign either Livan Hernandez or Kyle Lohse – to a multiyear contract!!! – I have to say we need to mortgage the farm to get Santana, if only to stay away from those two clowns. I used to think differently, but not if it means making bad decisions instead. Hopefully (and we know that Hope is a ship that sank), they will only have to give up either Gomez or Martinez and not both.

  44. dave

I read a very reasoned article somewhere that makes a case for Livan with or without Santana. Basically with the lineup healthy we can slam our way to a decent record with a 200 inning guy like Livan.

This soaks up innings lost by our beloved Glavine. It also either bumps El Duque to the pen or Pelfrey to reserve/pen or the minors.

Either way you have next year to think about and the annual injuries thing to deal with.

If Livan is here you have 2 of the 3 in reserve when someone goes down – El Duque, Pelfrey, Sosa.

If they make the trade for Santana you no longer have Humber, Mulvey, Guerra so you still have a valid starting 5 with an Ace leading the way.

I am not saying Livan is any great shakes but he lends stability at low cost and you have a plan no matter which way the Santana sweepstakes shake out.

  45. sloppy

dave; if we can "slam" our way for Livan, we can slam our way for pelfrey or humber or lawrence…. it didn't work last year, it won't work this year.

  46. dave

    Sloppy,

The difference is that the other Hernandez has pitched 200 innings and the young guys haven't.

The point is that with the fragile nature of the rotation having an Innings Eater™ is useful. I am not saying the Pelfrey or Humber may not pitch in the majors this year. I think Pelfrey learned a lot by getting spanked all season. But don't be fooled that they can go a full season.

Maine who was cruising in the first half hit a wall and was not half the pitcher he was in the first 2 months of the season. I am hoping Maine has figured out how to run the marathon.

Which is a nice segway to the article on Darling I read today about the differences in training today and when he was a pitcher. One of the things he mentioned is endurance. How he was taught to finish games and how the current training methods do not seem to value going the distance.

This is a problem with today's game and a pet peeve of Steve C's.

  47. sloppy

    dave:

you miss the point not me. the point is Livan has gone down innings for several years now, to barely over 200 last year as ERA has rocketed, his Ks have dwindled considerably. He's finished. Based on your logic we should sign Tom Seaver, Fergie Jenkins, Sandy Koufax. They all pitched 200 innings, some 300 innings and Pelfrey never has. Guess what Pelfrey will never pitch 200 innings if we sign has beens like Livan every year. Why do people want to go after garbage??????
We all know the game has changed. We can whine about it but its based on medical evidence on how to try to keep the arm healthy for longer periods of time. So while we all liked the complete game and all that stuff its not coming back until new evidence comes and gets accepted. Another reason not to get the over used and abused arm of Livan. With the $$ involved nobody is pitching 150 pitch games anymore.

  48. dave

    Sloppy,

Perhaps it is me but Seaver, Kofax,Ryan had short careers and many complete games.

As for Livan I guess we will have to disagree on his usefulness for 2008.

  49. sloppy

dave: Ryan had one of the longest careers in history and Seaver pitched for almost 20 years in the bigs. Only Koufax had a short career but he was quite the innings eater. We can disagree about Livan and when Omar pulls the trigger I'll root for him….. what choice will I have?
