Blockbuster …

January
5

The Mets have traded for Chicago Cubs outfielder Angel Pagan for minor leaguers outfielder Corey Coles and pitcher Ryan Meyers. Pagan is 26, and hit .264 (39-148) with four home runs and 21 RBI.

“Angel is young, athletic and has the versatility to play all three outfield positions,’’ said GM Omar Minaya.

Coles, 25, played on all three minor league levels last year, while Meyers, 22, went 1-4 with 13 saves and a 2.14 ERA in 33 games with Single-A Savannah.

Yes, this is the deal I have been waiting for.

  2. Andrew V.

This spell the beginning of the end for Carlos Gomez…?

  3. Ed

    Ha…love the headline. Hilarious.

Hey, did you hear delgado say the mets were “the best team” last year? Come on, Delgado. Take some responsibility. That would be better leadership.

Funny piece on it here: http://mlbfleecefactor.com/2008/01/04/homer-award-delgados-mets-had-the-best-team/

  4. sloppy...

No blasting Omar today. If you want Gomez to develop in AAA then you need at least two extra outfielders, Chavez and someone else since Alou will miss 80-100 games and Church will be booed out of town in a hurry. Pagan is a 5th outfielder.

If anyone like Andrew thinks he’s a replacement for Gomez then you think Gomez has zero potential.

  5. Andrew V.

    Pagan:
.289/.341/.395/.736 against right handed pitching and .236/.269/.486/.755 against left handed pitching

    Gomez:
    .212/ .312/ .258/ .569 against righties.
    .254/ .258/ .356/ .614 against lefties.

I don’t know if this is related, but I was planning on having pizza for dinner until I saw the Tony Orlando Nutrisystem commercial on TV. It was horrifying. The last thing I needed to see before dinner is Tony Orlando’s swollen, pregnant-like white belly filling up my TV screen. Now, my appetite is all but gone, and I’m thinking of celery and carrots.

  7. The real Fred

Hey Ed if you heard the whole interview he did take full responsibility he didnt blame it on any injuries nothing but that they slacked and he had a terrible year So maybe you should keep your piehole closed if you dont know what the heck your talking about. I cant stand dumbazz who yap and dont know what theyre talking about.

  8. Dave in Spain

I wonder if this is a prelude to Endy being included in a Santana deal. Maybe Endy, Gomez, Mulvey, Pelfrey (with another lower level pitcher maybe? Rustich/Niese/Kunz?)??

  9. sloppy...

ED: Ignore Fredhead. He is one of those sad figures in the world who thrives on hatred.

Andrew you have proven the meaningless of stats. Do you think Gomez was ready for the big time last year? Do you think Pagan is considered a top of the line future big leaguer? He’s a nice AAAA player who can fill in for Endy when Endy is filling in for Alou for half the year. He may even make the team and share RF with Church, but to compare him to one of your team’s best prospects …...

    dave in spain

maybe you are right. this pagan and the matt wise deals could be a prelude to Santana.

But I don’t think it is Chavez in a deal. It is Gomez and/or Martinez….and Heilman (hence the Wise pickup) plus one or two more out of Pelfrey, Mulvey, Guerro, and Humber.

Of course it could just be trying to find some role guys that the Muts can “fix”.

  11. Dan Gurney

Doea any GM ever axquire a new player and say “He’s a stiff, he’ll be gone by the final cut?” I thinkk Charlie Finley once acquired a pitcher (Glenn Abbott) and said “He’s nothing to write home about but he might help us win some games”.
To think that 30 years I hated Charlie O. Now I think he should have gone into Cooperstown along with Marvin Miller and Bowie Kuhn! Three guys who could stand another but along with Steinbrenner defined a decade in baseball.

  12. dave

    That’s great!

Our team is set of 08.

  13. Tweeter Gammons

John Delcos, would adding John Maine to the mix get the Santana deal done?

  14. dave

What point would adding a starting pitcher – and arguably the #2 on the team – do in getting Santana? You would have a better pitching staff and still no 5th starter plus no one in the minors to step up. You basically are where you are now.

  15. John Delcos

To Tweeter (RE: Maine): I agree with Dave. Throwing in Maine sets you back in that you still need another pitcher. Let’s face it, Santana isn’t happening.-JD

  16. scoopcoop

    JD,

if the Yanks and Sox don’t want him who else can pay his extension except the Mets (yes they can pay if they want to)?

Hence, although it is unlikely unless the Yanks and Sox balk, it is still possible for the Mets to land him if the Twins want to get anything for him except a draft pick when he goes FA after 08.

  17. stick

But, the Twins might keep him.

remember, they get more than a draft pick. They also get to have him start 34 games or so in 2008.

It was discussed at one point that the Twins, unless overwhelmed (and maybe still, just for PR reasons)might keep him if Lariano was healthy, and make a run at the playoffs in 2008, then let him walk.

  18. scoopcoop

    stick,

with Tigers and Clev I don’t see Twins making playoffs even w/Santana.

And let’s not forget Sox, Yanks and Angels.

All these teams are better than Twins.

They should trade him and get as much as they can.

  19. scoopcoop

    stick,

plus if they wait and are out of it by the trade deadline, they might get even less.

  20. sloppy...

Why should the Twins trade him? If they keep him and Liriano is back they have a very exciting one-two punch to sell tickets and get ready for their new stadium. And they can try to sign him and if they fdail at least they can tell their fan base they tried to be a big time club. Why should every team not on an ocean be a feeder club for the coastal cities. They should shell out the bucks they will make on their new park and keep him and raise the integrity of the game. Plus, their owner is a rich dude like the Steinbrenner family and they can afford him, if they want to keep him.

And if they don’t who can afford him besides the BoSox, Yanks Mets… How about the Cubs, Angels, Dodgers, Giants, there’s probably others….

  21. Scott from Pelham

    One small note.
Willie added Tom Nieto to the coaching staff. This a small but good thing because he was picked by Willie not Omar to be on the staff. Also he is a well regarded catching instructor. This should give Willie a different voice as a sounding board for pitching and catching related questions. Most of you might think this is of no consequence but I think he could really help Willie and also Rick Peterson.

  22. steve

Didn’t the Mets acquire Brian Schneider for his defensive prowess? Ken Oberkfell got a raw deal if you ask me. He should have been promoted to the staff.

  23. scoopcoop

    slop,

Why should the Twins trade him? B/c they don’t want to pay him (whether they have the $ or not)

And if they don’t who can afford him besides the BoSox, Yanks Mets… How about the Cubs, Angels, Dodgers, Giants, there’s probably others….

I don’t believe any team will shell out the $ for Santana execpt Sox, Yanks, Mets.

Cubs-they spent big last yr; won’t do it again; and have no players; and signed Zambrano
Angels-signed Hunter; doubt they will pay out more $ this yr (plus Santana supposedly wants to be on East coast)
Dodgers-signed Jones and Kuroda (and same East thing)
Giants-already have 126MM albatross in Zito

  24. sloppy...

You are making an assumtion that they don’t want to pay him based on the big city east coast mentslity of all the screaming heads. They made him an initial offer….. They having the pitching to contend if Liriano is back, they have a new stadium being built, and their owner has more dough than our favoirte owners do. So id they don’t like deals offered they certainly can change their mind and try to keep him, and try to win.

And what makes you think the Mets are willing to pay him??? We certainly don’t know that based on the last two winters do we?

And does Santana really want to be on East Coast? Who says so. Does he live in NYC? Did he announce this? Its all rumor. I want him on Mets but I hope he stays in Minnesota forever.

  25. scoopcoop

    Slop,

did Minn pay Hunter? Castillo? Silva? or a host of other guys over the yrs?

Minn is cheap. That is not rumor.

I believe the offer was made to make the fans beleive the Twins made an effort (remember Duqette making that laim “offer” for Guerreo?).

And I don’t beleive they can compete w/Clev and especially Det. You can’t count on alot from Liriano. And even if you did, Det and Clev are better.

You are right that it is rumors that Santana wants to be on the East coast. But even if he doesn’t want to be, the only teams outside Yanks, Sox and Mets who can afford him are LAD, LAA. And the rumors are that they don’t want to pay him.

As far as Mets paying. You are right. They have not shown inclination to offer up $ last two off seasons.

But if word gets out that the only reason Mets did not get Santana was $, I hope fans will be ticked off as much as I will be. That might be emough to sway Coupons to open pockets-I hope.

  26. Taylor

Gomez is not ready for the majors. Having Pagan for this season will allow Gomez one or two more years in the minors. Pagan is a pretty good player too. He’s going into his age 26 season so he also has a little bit of upside.

  27. Scott from Pelham

Steve: Oberkfell is perceived as the next Mets manager if Willie gets fired. Willie probably did not want him on the staff and if this was the case why is this a problem. All I heard on this blog was that Willie should get to pick his own coaches and now that he did you are not happy with it.

  28. sloppy...

Thanks for responding scoop…. Do you think that if Santana goes somewhere outside of Queens the official reason will be anything but “they wanted too many prospects, or they wanted Jose”....

Why are people so wound about Pagan…. I guess its because when you don’t do anything of importance a trade for a 5th outfielder/AAA time splitter is your biggie!!!

  29. Scott from Pelham

People keep saying the Mets showed no inclination to spend $ the past two offseason’s. Who did they not spend the $ on. Zito ? Give me names.
Bradford was not about money it was about contract length, as was Oliver. Omar had no problem with 2 years on Bradford or 1 year on Oliver. Yes he was wrong.
We all know they overpaid Mota & Show so please back up words with some facts.
Did you want them to give Zito 7 years or Silva 5 years.
If this is the case please say so. If not stop calling the Mets cheap because they are only cheap if you compare them to the Red Sox and the Yankees.
As far as Santana goes stop saying the Mets will not pay what he wants. They have not been given that opportunity yet. If they have please show me the facts.
I have said many times here just because you have money does not mean you have to spend it stupidly.
We do not need any more Bobby Bonilla’s or Roger Cedeno’s on
    this team.
Do you think maybe the Red Sox would like to have back the contracts they signed with Coco Crisp or JD Drew.

  30. scoopcoop

    slop,

Do you think that if Santana goes somewhere outside of Queens the official reason will be anything but “they wanted too many prospects, or they wanted Jose”....

I believe the official reason will be Twins wanted to clean out Mets farm sys. It is already been stated by Omar that Reyes is going nowhere and it is rumored that Twins backed off of that request

But the unofficial is that they won’t spend the $.

  31. scoopcoop

    Scott P

“Did you want them to give Zito 7 years or Silva 5 years.”

No I don’t. But I do want them to get the best available, which this yr was Arod and is Santana. They did not make a try for Arod (just like 2000) and I feel that the main problem w/Santana is the $.

“If this is the case please say so. If not stop calling the Mets cheap because they are only cheap if you compare them to the Red Sox and the Yankees.”

I call cheap exactly for the above. There is no reason why they can’t spend like the Sox. Maybe they can’t go to Yankee $ land, but the Sox is possible. And the only way to get Santana is to go to Sox $ levels.

And the worse part about not spending like the Sox or maybe the Yanks is not even the $. I believe it is b/c they like to follow all the “rules” that Selig lays down about holding the size of contracts to a “reasonable” level.

This is clear in that the Mets won’t go over the lux tax salary level or as was stated by Omar that they won’t overspend on draft picks (which has hurt FS) b/c Selig has rules about how much t spend on picks (and Mets about the only team to follow this).

Plus, everytime Selig needs some team to do a PR stunt (like this Israeli thing), the Mets are first in line. I don’t mind it except, Mets always do it. Never the Yanks, Sox, etc.

So if you want clarification. Then I call them cheap not b/c they don’t outspend most teams but b/c they don’t spend as much as they could.

And then the Mets complain they don’t get the back page.

Bottom line: Mets can’t complain they aren’t the Yanks if they don’t want to make commitments like Yanks.

That is very irritating to me.

Maybe it is why I am a Giants fan and not a Jets fan like most Mets fans are….I can only take so much pain from one NY team. I can’t live with both of my teams having crappy management and therefore less chance to be good. Giants are superior to Jets (usually), like (unfortunately) Yanks are better than Mets.

Not just on the field but behind the sceens.

Sorry but you can’t compare Santana to those goof balls. Nor can you compare Zito to Santana.

Zito contract is gonna go down as one of the dumbest ones ever.

5/75 was rumored to be Mets offer. That was a little high to me but not unreasonable.

7/126 will keep Giants fans out of playoffs for another 6 yrs or so.

  33. sloppy...

Hey Scott. Omar spent most of the off season a year agochasing Zito, and not even trying to bite on guys like Meche and Lilly. If he had shelled ut the $$ on any one of them this team would have been in the playoffs. So yes, I think the team was definitely to cheap. And two I could care less if they pay a little much because if they win they get it back in spades. They didn’t want to spend 7 years on Zito or 4 years on Meche or Lilly. So we had a kid who wasn’t ready in the rotation and followed with a bunch of cheap crap vice one decent guy. So stop knocking us when we see the true picture of an organiztion too cheap to spend what the market is spending or too stupid to see it didn’t have the tools to repeat its 07 win season.
When Shea was empty, Wilpon was ina panic and opened the wallet but now…..
The Mets are cheap. The 2007/20008 Mets are definitely cheap. Hence getting two very cheap , mediocre players from DC. Hence, not going after any of the quality relievers on the market, hence not getting a decent starter last winter when some were available. And the length line is pure crap. The Mets wouldn’t give Bradford 3 years but when they got desperate they sure did with a real bum like Schoeneweis. And this year there are no good starters out there, so you say what do want Omar to do? Well, he had his chance a year ago and slept with Boras and screwed the fans.
And your reward sir is a spit in your face by this ownership with its outrageous ticket price increase.

  34. scoopcoop

    slop,

“And your reward sir is a spit in your face by this ownership with its outrageous ticket price increase.”

Wait till you see the 09 Citifield prices. 08 price increase will be nothing compared to that.

  35. scoopcoop

    More on Santana

Yankees VP Hank Steinbrenner recently told Newsday that his team will not give Johan Santana more than a five-year contract if they acquire him from the Twins.

This would appear to open the door for the Mets if they are willing to go more than 5.

If he goes to the Yanks for 5 yrs when he could have come to the Mets for 6 or 7 but didn’t b/c the Coupons did not anty up, I never want to hear another Met official complain that they don’t get the back page.

  36. Steve (The Original)

Scott: You didn’t hear that from me. I could care less who picks the coaches. All I know is that Obie has been a valuable member of the Met minor league system since 2001 and it’s about time he got rewarded on the major league level. It’s a joke that he hasn’t been.

  37. sloppy...

You are so right Scoop…. In 2009 it will be cheaper to go to an NFL game than to rip-off field. Remember all Met fans should come to PNC Park and sit behind home plate for 27 bucks, park downtown for 5 bucks walk over the Clemente bridge and buy lots of beer on the promenade before the game for 2-3 bucks a bottle. Then everyone can chant for Delcos and make him a celebrity!
