On Minaya being out of town

It really doesn’t matter if Omar Minaya is out of town for a week in Israel with spring training a little over a month away.
With phones, Internet and FAX, you can do business with anyone from anywhere.
I know Johan Santana is still out there, but does it really matter? Does anybody honestly believe he’s coming to the Mets?

Honestly? Yeahk there is a good chance.
This has dragged on so long, that unless someone blinks, the best odds might be that he stays on the Twins. But if he is traded, the Mets are probably the most likely destination. Just at what cost is the question.
If the earlier reports (on Metsblog) of Omar giving a “pick 4” list of prospects, IMO he is doing the right thing (assuming he is holding back at least Martinez, and probably Guerra (hope on that one). Assume that just about everyone else in the system is fair game.
Still a solid haul for the Twins, and it wouldn’t cripple the Mets like trading the best 7 guys would.
If Gomez, Mulvey, + 2 more upper level prospects (say anyone other than Guerra and Martinez)isn’t enough, then just move on.
At some point the Twins GM will have to give in and take an offer, and that from the mets looks to be as good or better than what the other teams offered. ALthough who knows what offers were officially made, vs. rumored about on the ‘Net.
The biggest hang up to the Mets getting is Santana is not the prospects. It is the money, as usual. The Mets could get him if they gave up four prospecsts, but they will never in a million years pay him $ 140 million for 7 years. Too much money for the Mets. The Yankees or Red Sox will get him.
Yes, others have reported that the Mets are very much in it for Santana. With the Yanks and BoSox engaged in mere blocking moves against one another, the situation is ripe for Omar to sweep in and make a deal. The main stumbling block seems to be the Mets’ reluctance to include both Gomez and Martinez in the package.
The problem with the deal is the Mets are not willing to give up ALL of their prospects (like Martinez and Geurra and Gomez in the same deal) because they’ll have to give Santana a ridiculous contract. It’s not that signing Santana to a deal like that would be all bad (it’d be extremely risky) but I think the Mets would do it. The thing that makes it bad, is that you’re giving up the young players that are cheap that will enable you to pay Santana down the road, along with giving longer term contract to Wright and Reyes and a new first baseman (Texeira). Having Martinez in left and Gomez is something that could enable you to do that, along with good young pitching.
I honestly think they do have a chance. This has dragged o for so long that with each passing week the Mets chances of acquiring him increases.

And yes, he’s out there. Is he coming to the Mets, maybe.
It won’t come cheap, and that’s what I’m scared about.
I agree with Stick. I think that if the Yanks or BoSox wanted him this deal would be done. Obviously they like what they have and do not have a pressing need to get this guy.
We on the other hand desperately need someone of his caliber. I don’t mind giving up young guys for a top line player because there is no guarantee the young guys will step up.
Also the way the team is configured it has a perishable shelf life.
You obviously don’t give everyone up and hopefully we keep our number one picks in the next few years so we can see what kind of scouting dept and GM we really have.
We cannot rely on just scouting 2 or 3 latin countries for 15 year olds.

I agree completely. This is not about how many prospects.
Coupons don’t want to pay 7/140 and don’t want to upset Bud Selig by setting new std for contracts.
Coupons hope Sox or Yanks get him so they can back out.
But I’ll be elated if they do it and shut up about them being cheap if they get him.
Dave, why do you say the Yankees don’t have a pressing need for him, but the Mets are desperate? Is it because you think the Yankee SPs are so much better, or just that they rest of the team can cover for weak SP?
Right now, the Mets rotation would be Pedro, Maine, Perez, Duque and Pelfrey/#5 out of ST
THe Hankees have Wang, Petite, Mussina, Hughes and Joba/Kennedy.
Wang sucked like Glavine in October, Mussina just sucks, Petite had an OK year but is fragile (and a roid head!), and Hughes/Kennedy have about what, 10 starts combined? Joba has none of course.
Health of course is hard to predict, but assuming everyone stays reasonably healthy (no more than 1 or 2 15 day DL stints!), the Mets look to have a better rotation overall.

I think the chances of Santana coming to the Mets is quite good. Yanks and Sox aren’t going to want to trade way good prospects and then sign Santana to a $20 million/year contract. They will get killed even more than they already are with the luxury tax. Unless some team comes out of nowhere, I think this deal with the Mets will get done – most likely in a week or two.
I think Wang is a better pitcher than anything we have. Moose is aging but ok. Pettite had a good year but has been outed as a user and the other young guys are widely considered to be better than our young guys.
Pedro is a wiley veteran, but I have doubts about him lasting a full season. El Duque .. Maine had issues after half a season and Ollie has issues from one game to the next.
I like Maine and Ollie, but they have yet to produce consistently over a full season. I like Pedro but he was just off for one full year.
I think Wang is one of the better young pitchers in the league. I would trade any of our pitchers straight up for him in a heartbeat.
The other Yanks’ I agree have issues, but I think the Yanks young guys are a bit more certain than ours are esp since both our young pitchers came off major surgery a year ago. That is why I make that statement. Last year in his first full season Pelfrey was just about run out of town. I think he will be better, but does anyone at this point project him as a #1/2 type of guy? At this point even a #3 is a stretch.
I do not watch the Yanks but I do scan the papers and that is the impression I get. Overall I would take the Yanks’s starting pitchers over ours.
Why not give up all your prospects ? What players have the Mets farm system produced the last 20 years anyway ? They have produced exactly two players (Reyes and Wright) in exactly two decades. Every other player we have heard hyped about from the farm system comes up here and stinks, so why not trade them ?
