OK, here’s the exercise. I’m putting you in charge of making New Year’s resolutions for the Mets, or anybody in baseball for that matter.
Here’s an example.
Jose Reyes: Not to swing at the first pitch so much.
Let’s see how creative you can be.

Omar Minaya: No more pre-Nixon birthdates on the roster
This is not creative, but I would like to see more hit and run plays. Willie has a habit of being too conserative at times. Stop it!
No more Limas, Chan Hos, Williams, Lawrences…. Let the children play!
No more trading children for mediocrities who have a "record" Believe it or not Omar, a crappy track record is not what anyone wants but you and the Wilpons…..
No more Omar…. unless its the old risky one, not the I love the scrap heap one.
Wow, this blog is coming back to life.
Willie should manage with no fear. He should not worry about losing his job if the Mets have a five game losing streak in April or are not in first place on June 1.
Willie please remember, in the end all managers are hired to be fired. ( Look to the Bronx )
Play the kids, show some trust and lets see what happens.

The team needs to get its Mojo™ back. They need to believe they can win but not expect to.
As Sloppy says above the team needs to get younger. I don't want the Devil Rays but the old marginal players need to go. They add nothing. The young hungry guys deserve a spot on the bench to be used in a normal rotation of rest and injury.
We also need another starting pitcher who is an innings eater. With all the old guys the young pitchers will get their chance.

They should resolve to stick to a plan to build a sustained, winning organization that can contend for many years, and not to panic and gut the farm for an "all or nothing" attemp to win it all in 2008.
That does mean giving prospects a chance and living with some growing pains, and may even mean that they don't win the WS in 2008 after all.
David Wright: learn to say "no". I appreciate that you are a young rising star that is not selfish and greedy and wants to use your celebrity to benefit others, but sometimes, you need to say "no". Saying "yes" to EVERYTHING not only dilutes your brand (making your presence less influential and less valuable), but it also potentially squanders your energy and your focus on the field.
Rick Peterson to not wear his jacket if it is 75 degrees and above.
Have Rick Peterson and Willie Randolph allow Aaron Heilman to work on a breaking pitch and then let him start games in Spring Training to see if he can succeed in the starting rotation.
Mike Pelfrey- Avoid the big inning.

Ownership and management:
Resolve to build a class organization from top to bottom. They have the resources to do so and should be done from the farm on up.
First good move would be to build upon Citi Field. At Shea everthing from the stadium to the uniforms the vendors wear to the walls at Shea including the plywood that shows the Mets winning years was dingy. Everything from the play to all else will shine.
And this is from a guy from NC who only gets to a couple of games a season.
don't play down to your opponents. give billy wagner at least 2 runs to work with – he can't handle less. play more small ball and take more pitches. this list could go on until 2009…
In light of the recent events chronicled by the Mitchell Report and the Broward County Sheriff's office, I would suggest a 'resolution' for every major league team. No more drugs and/or drinking in the clubhouses.
Is the average American worker allowed to drink or do drugs at their workplace?
I can't wait for the Congressional hearings so I can hear the rationale used by Owners, Managers, General Managers, Coaches and Trainers to allow their clubhouses to be used to 'juice up' their players.
It's a sorry time for sports in America.
To all the Met fans and you know who you were last year: Do not ever wish for a pennant race! It is much better to win the division running away with it ala 2006 than to let any other team think they have a shot at it.

I agree, but they don't have a FS to start with.
So…I hope the Coupons and Omar resolve to get the best talent and forget about listening to the commisioner and holding the line on salaries for FAs and bonuses for draft picks….....b/c if they don't you can't build a winner
To Willie: Believe in the Suicide Squeeze play…ESPECIALLY with Luis Castillo at bat and Jose Reyes at third base with less than 2 out!
Delgado: Stay away from the breaking ball low and in.
Alou: Stay healthy!! Maybe need to apply some urine to other body parts so that they can be as tough as my hands?
Schneider: Wear earplugs when I bat, because as good as my defense is, the fans will certainly let me hear about my lousy hitting.
El Duque: Ask Willie for a move to the bullpen. My injuries have seriously hurt this team in 2 straight seasons now. Maybe if I'm only expected to pitch 70 innings or so, I can actually make it through an entire season.
Beltran: Always make sure that the camera is on my mole-free side.
Pedro: Prove to all of the naysayers that I'm still the same dominating Pedro. No, scratch that, I'm gonna be better than ever!!
Maine: Man that dress looks HOT on the woman. I wonder if she'll let me try it on?
Perez: Instead of walking, I'll just hop everywhere. Yeah, that'd be cool!!
Wright: .350 Batting Average anyone?
Sanchez: Either hire a driver, or climb on the back of hop-along Ollie.
Reyes: I will host a talent show during the All Star festivities. It will be called, 'Dancing With The All Stars'.
Willie: To get through chapter one of 'Managing a Bullpen for Dummies'.
Sanchez did have a driver.
and maybe instead of panning Willie how about panning Omar for giving him a 4 man pen. Willie handled the pen just fine in 06 when he had 6 good relievers.

1) The Yankees have paid a ton of money to a ton of guys—mostly, their own—and re-established their position as big winter dogs.
2) With Cabrera now at third, and Edgar Renteria at short (via a trade with the Braves), the Tigers have a lineup to rival the Yankees. It's already better than Boston's.

Worst winter so far
1) The Mets' most important offseason move was spending $25 million on an old second baseman, Luis Castillo. They had better come up with more than that to compete for the NL East crown.
2) The Brewers lost their closer (Cordero) and a key setup man (Linebrink), then had to overspend to get Gagne and David Riske to plug the holes.
3) Agent Scott Boras made a nice commission off A-Rod, but his reputation took a beating.

Jose Reyes: Patience and line drive hitting is the key to being a great lead off man, learn to do both better
Luis Castillo: Don't act so hurt all the time. It's killing the moral of your coaching staff, your teammates, and the fans. FIx that knee issue and get healthier.
David Wright: Start off 2008 like you ended 2007, remain consistent at the plate. Don't strikeout over 100 times this year.
Carlos Beltran: Learn to hit a BREAKING BALL. You like like a fool when you are behind the count and the pitcher throws you that curve or slider. Just make better contact, please.
Carlos Delgado: This is it buddy, a contract year. If you put up numbers like last year you might not even last. Just hit and don't worry about the injuries or anything else.
Moises Alou: As much as I like your hustle on the defensive end, try not to injure your already fragile body. Giving up that single, or double, is not worth you going down for a long period of time.
Ryan Church: Don't be intimidated by NY. Just play well. That first year playing in this state is very pressuring but try your best to overcome that first year NY hump.
Brian Schneider: Hit buddy. Learn to make better contact. I know your defense is very sound but providing more offense is very beneficial.
Oliver Perez: Stop changing your arm slot when you pitch.
John Maine: Just keep doing what you're doing. It is working. Gaining more stamina wouldn't hurt though.
Pedro Martinez: Just make it out there and pitch like your career has been reborn.
El Duque: Reduce the amount of vacation time you spend during the season.
Mike Pelfrey/Phil Humber: Just work on your pitches and try to improve every single aspect of your game.

Omar & the scouts: Do your homework and check it twice for this year's draft. With 3 picks in the top 35, if you draft well, you won't need to hear how bad your farm system is next offseason.
Wilpons sell the mets to a owner who will spend whatever it takes in the farm system and major league level like George Steinbrenner.
