Selig could issue punishment

George Mitchell said he would urge Bud Selig to forego punishment of those named on the list, but the commissioner said he would examine each name on a case-by-case basis.
Selig also said “nothing to me is more important than the integrity of the game,’’ and that he would be the final judge. Presumably, that could include whether to place an asterisk next to record holders Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens.

If he really meant that he would have done something 10 years ago.
If he really meant that he would not have waited till congress almost took away baseball’s legal protection as a monopoly and have them threaten several times to take over.
If Selig wants to dish out punishment for those responsible, he should start with himself, work his way through all the owners and only then focus his attention on the players. But the “integrity of the game” is really Selig’s code for “profits for the owners”. Only a collection of 30 scumbags would have this guy as their chief boot-licking lackey.
Not that the players should be let off the hook, by the way. But scumbags working for scumbags is nothing to get overly excited about.
