This is a good year to finally get:
Jim Rice
Andre Dawson
Rich Goosage
Bert Blyleven
some love.
I think Mattingly, Concepcion and Lee Smith will get in someday.
Jim Rice
Andre Dawson
Rich Goosage
Bert Blyleven
Jack Morris
Blyleven
Gossage
John
Raines
Rice
Smith
Blyleven, Gossage, Dawson, Morris, and Rice
Blyleven, Gossage, and Dawson
Dawson, Raines and Trammel are victims of the era they played in. For some reason it didnt hurt Ryne Sandburg and a few others, but they deserve more rep. And Dawson just plain belongs in.
Goose Gossage and Tim Raines. In my opinion the Hall of Fame is all about dominance. If you have to “make a case” for any player they do not belong in the hall of fame.
You simply have to think of them and think immediately, “yeah, he’s a hall of famer”
And I mean I’m young and never got to see Gossage pitch and I caught Raines at the end… all the way in the end but basing it pure on numbers, they were dominant and impact players.
Odds are, Raines doesn’t get in.
Blyleven
Gossage
Rice
Raines
Trammell
If Trammell played in NY he would already be in.
He was that good.
None of the above.
Bert Blyleven (WAY past due!)
Andre Dawson
Goose Gossage
Jack Morris
and yes…
Mark McGwire
Raines (2nd best leadoff man in history), Goose (one of the top 5 closers in history), and Blyleven (one of the top 5 strikeout pitchers in history).
Blyleven-winningest European player ever!
Dawson-Bad 1987 MVP choice though. Sucked in the playoffs too.
Gossage-would pitch 7 innings in a game as a reliever
John- In all honesty from about 1976-1980 he was one of the most dominating pitchers I’ve seen. Guys would hit 20-22 groundballs a game off him.
McGwire-Steroids were declared legal the day Arnold Schwarzenegger was made head of the Prseident’s council on Physical Fitness.
Morris- I don’t buy this “he pitched to the score” nonsense Bill Madden pushes (along with
“LoDuca is a leader” and “Judge Landis didn’t do anything for baseball because attendance was the same in 1944 as it was in 1920”) but he was durable and pretty good.
Raines- first game back 5/1/87 against the Mets is burned into my memory of that painful season along with Pendleton.
Not on my List
Rice. Fenway Park hitter.
Parker. Mediocre mid career because he was fat and a cokehead.
Murphy. Tempting as Gold Glove CF and 2 time MVP. But not long enough.
Mattingly. Maybe if he had two more years before the back went.
I’m watching/listening to Wynton Marsalis Live from Lincoln Center with the “Red Hot Holiday Stomp” and now I’m chosing Baseball Hall of Fame members. Nice evening.
My choices are:
Rich Gossage
Tommy John
Tim Raines
Jim Rice
Brady Anderson: The canary in the coal mine.
Chuck Finley: Managed to get beaten up by Tawny Kittain.
Chuck Knoblauch: Developed Sasser’s Disease as a second baseman.
Mark McGwire: Doesn’t want to talk about the past, just wants to help kids in the future.
Dave Parker: Renaissance man who made bling part of the MLB uniform.
Who’s on your ballot?
Goose Goassage – one of the best – if not the best – of his era and a top all-time reliever
Tim Raines – best leadoff hitter in history after Ricky Henderson.
REAL CLOSE (not close to Stargell, a close call)
Jim Rice – he hit a ton for 10 years
Andre Dawson – Could play the game
Bert Blyleven – longevity and played with bad teams
Jack Morris – great clutch pitcher..
Lee Smith – all-time saves leader
Tommy John – longevity; surgery bearing his name probably more of a contribution.
Heart tugger and emotional yes
Don Mattingly (love him but did he do it long enought; his stats on par with Kirby of Twins fame)
On Principle NO
Mark McGwire – 565 plus HRhitter a better Dave Kingman on stroids. Mattingly the better ballplayer, allround.
Like but a bit short on numbers
Dave Concepcion – great glove and good bat
Alan Trammell – paved way for bigger SS/hitters like Ripkin/Nomar/Jeter/A-Rod
Dale Murphy – two-time MVP
Dave Parker (the cobra)great hitter
No Way:
Brady Anderson (one muscle-bound year)
Harold Baines
Rod Beck – (cool name)
Shawon Dunston
Chuck Finley
Travis Fryman
David Justice (got rough with Halle)
Chuck Knoblauch (has he remembered how to throw)
Robb Nen
Jose Rijo (he could have been if not for arm troubles)
Todd Stottlemyre (his dad was much better)
I hate the fact that people think someone has to get in every year…the Hall of Fame should be something that is a high standard. If you say someone’s name you should know right away if they are a hall of famer or not. No one on that list should get in this year or any year…
The only one wearing the right hat….
George Thomas Seaver

But seriously..
Goose.
If anyone has time look at Trammell in the context of when he played. 6 time allstar 4 Gold Gloves 3 Silver Sluggers.
Don’t compare him to Jeter / Nomar or A-Rod
You need to look at him in relation to the SS of his
generation.
Outside of Ripken nobody else was better.
Trammell was a great player from 1980 to 1990.
he faded after age 32.
For ten years he was an awesome SS.
If he played for the Mets all Met fans would be up in arms that he gets no HOF votes.
I would vote for:
Blyleven (great stats considering the teams for which he played), Morris (most wins in the 1980’s), Gossage (all that was said above), and, Tim Raines (An onbase catalyst with the highest steal success rate 808 SB/146 CS,1330 Walks vs. 966 K’s, and 2502 Games and 2605 hits).
Trammell should eventually get in, but, not ahead of the above.
Rice and Dawson’s careers are too similar. They either both get in or both don’t.
I agree Donnie Baseball misses out due to just not having the same amount of time as the other potential candidates.
Here they are:
Bert Blyleven
Andre Dawson
Goose Gossage
Jack Morris
Tim Raines
Jim Rice
Unbelievable that if Raines & Dawson get in there will be more Expos than Mets in the Hall of Fame.
Blyleven, Goose and Morris.
On the fence about Rice, Dawson. Would like to say no, but then how do you justify Puckett.
Jim Kaat a must on vet committee side…
283 wins, 16 Gold Glove awards, 3.45 ERA, 180 complete games, 31 shutouts, 16 home runs…
Three names jump out for me
Blyleven
Gossage
Rice
Arguments for a couple of others are solid.
McGwire does NOT belong.
Scott:
Your arguement in support of Trammell is a compelling one that I agree the Met fans would be in arms for him being ignored. Personally, I think that Ed Kranepool should be considered due to the cruel and unusual punishment that he must have gone through having been with the Mets from their inception and through those tough years!
My vote is for Chuck Finley – Just look at his Stats Chuck Pitched for Aneheim when they were horrible. If you can get those kind of numbers when you are on a bad team well you are Hall of Fame Material to me Look at his stats and compare them to his teams stats. If he had played for the Yankees with these kind of stats he would be a shoe in Fin 31 for Hall of Fame !!!!!!!!!
