Mets never in it for Willis

“Dontrelle Willis”:http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7133 and Miguel Cabrera are on their way to Detroit, with the Florida Marlins getting back prospects outfielder Cameron Maybin, pitcher Andrew Miller, catcher Mike Rabelo and three minor league pitchers.

Obviously, the Mets didn’t have those resources, and even if they did they wouldn’t have been invited to the party.

“Sometimes a player is available,’’ Mets GM Omar Minaya said, “but, he’s not available to you. There are teams that don’t like to trade in the division.’’

We’ve talked about this several times before the trade line. No way was Willis coming to the Mets.

lol there are teams that don’t trade in division. Just like u Omar?

  2. tomg

It’s not that it’s about trading within the division it’s because the mets have no good prospects to trade. It’s amazing that teams who have been good like the yankees, red sox, angels, tigers have very good prospects and than you have the mets who have been bad for long periods of time and have a weak farm system.

Omar’s comment was that the Marlins didn’t want to trade within the division, not that he was afraid.-JD

Just talked to one of the Marlin writers and asked him how many of the dugout dancing girls (Mermaids) were in the deal.-JD

so then where did Carlos Delgado, Paul Lo Duca, Jason Vargas, etc…come from?

i don’t have any interest in Willis as personally i’d be worried that he’s never going to regain the form he had and the Marlins were charging for the Willis of 3 years ago as opposed to who he is and will be going forward.

    BUT

to say that he “wasn’t available to us” reeks of spin and it’s pathetic that Omar wasn’t called out on it.

if our prospects aren’t valued enough to bring back what we’re looking for, then it’s time to lie in the bed you’ve made (by drafting them, by refusing to go over slot in signing, by misevaluating their true talent level in previous years when they could have brought back much more—see: milledge, lastings).

let them play, hope they produce, then we can either go with them for the year or look to make moves in season with players who have redeemed themselves.

its for the better,d train has been stalled for a little while now. Hes just not very good anymore. Could he bounce back? Sure, but i’ll believe it when i see it.

Omar should have said “I don’t have no stinkin players…you joe what I’m saying

and the crowd in the lobby should respond…
“we know you don’t have no stinkin players

Go home Omar ….& JD you can leave too…no news for you to report-on the Mets anyway…unless no news is news….

  8. scoopcoop

JD, can you flip a coin w/yanks beat guy or do rock, paper, scissors or something to get back to reporting them?

The Tigers have been good ? One playoff apperance in 20 years. That to me is not good. In 2003 they lost 119 games. The Tigers were a major dissapointment last year. Expected to win their division and did not even make the postseason. (sounds like the Mets doen’t it). I am very intersted to see how many prospects the Tigers now have left in their system. Have you even looked at Miller’s numbers not that impressive.
The Marlins simply were not going to trade 2 of their best players to the Mets and have to play them 19 times a year.
    The media would crucify them.
LoDuca and Delagado were good players but Cabrera is the next Manny Rameriez. If he were a FA tomorrow he would get at least 20 million a year. Who know if the Tigers will even be able to afford to sign these guys long term.

Minaya should stop at the gift shop, pick up his “I went to the GM Meetings and all I got was this stupid T-Shirt”, and come home before there is the temptation to trade just to trade. Sign an innings eater like Hernandez or take a chance on Colon to pick up the Glavine innings, a Chacon and Dotel or equivalent, to pick up long and middle relief and go home and have dreams of next year when you no longer have Pedro’s contract, Delgado’s contract, and probably Alou’s contract. Maybe by then there will be a deeper crop of FA pitching and the farm system will offer a little more in terms of trade leverage.

  11. Rui Girao

Inside sources tell me that Mets offered Gomez, Heilman and Humber for Bedard

  12. SCOTT FROM PELHAM

Stillsane: Lets hope that this is what Minaya will do.
I for one believe this team as currently built will be within striking distance of the wildcard at the trading deadline. If they need to add they will have chips to spend and if they need to sell the certainly will have players who will have value as rentals ( Delgado, and Alou ). I know we all want the Mets to win now but a good poker player also knows sometimes it is better to fold than to go all in.

  13. tomg

    JD,

I was watching the CBS news and the sports reporter stated that the mets have offered Humber, Heilman and gomez for Beddard. have you heard anything about it?

  14. sloppy

Listen to yorseof Pelham. You beleive the Mets will be within striking distance of the wild card in July… That says we are tad better than Pittsburgh and Florida. And although you probably didn’t mean it, you got it right. We suck and we’ll officially suck when Livan is signed.

We will not be the 2nd team in town because Brooklyn and Statn Island will be above us. Maybe even the indpendent Ducks. We’ll be the 5th team in town.

Good bye Omar. Time to go and give us a real GM.

Just because Florida traded within the division to the Mets 2 and 3 years ago does not mean they wanted to do so now.
By all accounts, they got a great deal, probably because they traded both Cabrera and Willis. The Mets may have wanted only Willis. By packaging both, they got 2 of the top 10 rated prospects in all of baseball.
