Gut feeling …

December
3

What’s your gut telling about the Mets’ activity during the Winter Meetings? Mine tells me they’ll do something, but it won’t qualify as a team altering move.

Those pitchers we’ve been talking about? Not happening.

Tell me what you’re thinking and vote in the poll.

I totally agree, why? because the other GM’s are not stupid, they can see that the Mets prospects are garbage and over hyped. My prediction for the up coming season is the Mets will finish in third place.

    I hope you are wrong.

You never know what the other guys are thinking. The fact that we imploded the last month and none of these guys who are ‘chips’ did anything to get excited about makes others’ view them as losers.

At the end of the day the best thing for the team may be to sign the best FA pitcher available and hang on to what you have hoping that a year older means they are better.

That will not win us a WS this year, but it is not my decision to make.

I still believe that if we do get one of the pitchers that we have been discussing the team is good enough to win.

If they don’t get any of them and we sign one of the FA we had better hope that everything falls into place and we get lucky.

Where are my lucky fuzzy dice?

    Dave

I would love to get Bedard or Haren but I don’t know the Mets have the chips.

A more realistic option is Joe Blanton along with Carlos Silva or Orlando Hernandez.

I predict thats more along the lines of what the Mets will do, and its not as bad as it sounds.

I agree with John that the Mets will make some move, but, not one that is Earth shattering. Minaya’s reputation for always being an active dealer may actually cause a trade so that it will not be tarnished. Whether or not the deal that is made is a prudent one, well we will just have to see. Also, I really wonder how many reclamation pitchers self proclaimed pitching guru, Rick Peterson is going to take on this season. I know that he is well respected, and, in some cases, has gotten results, but, it tough bordering on painful, watching some of these players come on the field to pitch in a one or two run game. The Mets should be trying to win, not a “throw him out there and see what happens” type of team. All of those, well it was just one game, made us one game short of the post season last year. Hopefully, the lesson is learned.

None of the top guys here = a .500 team

Mets were .500 team for 4 mos. Atl and Philly have improved themselves already.

Just jope Omar does not get any Silvas for 5yr/60M.

  6. pal88

With all the questionable press regarding Omar’s track record and the fact that we do not have the horses to get something good in return makes me afraid they’ll do something stupid just to do something

  7. Annie Savoy

I’m still getting over the Milledge trade – which didn’t even involve what they really need – pitching.

  8. steve

Pal: I’m more afraid he’ll do something stupid to save his own butt for the short term.

  9. The Coop

Right on Annie, re: Stings trade! – although I have to side with my boy Ant DeRosa here…none of the moves the mets make will be earth shattering, I could see us with a Silva or Livan type (ugh)...my vote would go to Blanton as far as a #2 or #3 rotation guy…as long as Maine or Oh Pea are not included in those trades. They are basically the same pitcher. Considering the production we got out of those two this year, having a third one of them won’t be so bad.

It is unbelievable how badly the Mets are getting hurt by their weak farm system. It is just crippling them from making any significant moves. With more an more top players signing extensions with their current teams there are going to be fewer top free agents available. The Mets better start building their farm system or they will never be able to make any big moves.

  11. scoopcoop

    Todd-farm system

that is exactly what Omar said he would improve and it looks like that has not happened.

And w/FA quality going down w/teams paying young players thru their arb yrs, if you don’t have a good farm, you are gonna be a cycle up-and-down team.

  12. stick

I expect some minor tweaking deals and/or 2nd tier FA signing (like a Silva)

I hope for a smart move like going after a guy about to break out and become the next haren, bedard, etc. Ian Snell is my front runner.

I dread a stupid, panic move just to do something that will bite them for years. Just about any deal for one of the “big 3” would probably end up being in this catagory.

Frankly, while they need 1 more good SP, the team is still a 90 win team potentially, and can certainly make the playoffs.

I put this on Metsblog too, but if the pitching market is this crazy, Omar should dangle maine and/or Perez to see if he can cash in on a boat load of prospects.

maine is just about as good as Haren already, and certainly a better player (and contract) than Blanton.

Why not reload th barren farm system that way? One player back would have to be a young SP prospect (another teams Pelfrey/Humber) that could go into the rotation.

With the rest of the talent, and a small bit of luck, they can still make the playoffs this year, and really set up for a dynasty.

    Not gonna happen of course.

Oh, the best thing about my plan? Imagine how it upends the market, and freaks out the other GMs, if Omar suddenly becomes a seller of SP? If nothting else, it would change the negotiating dynamics for his attempts to buy!

Gotta make leverage where you can.

  13. dave

    I agree.

    Snell has potential.

Why does Omar have a rep for wheeling and dealing. He hasn’t traded for a big name since he was in Canada. The biggest name he’s traded for was Castillo who was moved because he play on Minny’s hideous surface any more.

Maine: O’s gave up on him Julio was a bum
Perez the Bucs gave up on, Nady was a p/T player, El Duque was being dumped, Green was being dumped,
Sanchez was hi best trade in my mind. He can’t make a big trade. I guess that’s why the Met guy won scout of the year.

F’A’s he likes to play with the big boys but that seems to also have been on the past. No big boys last year and no big boys this year.

  15. chucky

Just how exactly did the Mets farm system come to be so barren? 1/ Delgado for prospects, 2/ Losing draft picks for Beltran,Wagner and Martinez, 3/ Lo Duca for prospects, Milledge for Schneider/Church ( if Milledge could still be considered a prospect.) It appears that Omar in an effort to win now has gone to the well a little too often. Now’s the time to stop the bleeding. Save Gomez, Mulvey, Humber and FMart, sign Livan to eat innings and go to war with what we got. Don’t do anything stupid just for a PR move.
