I believe Joe Torre has returned to Shea several times since he last managed the Mets.

Mel: I remember it and was at the Polo Grounds about three times for Mets game. I remember it as being very old although the “bathtub” shape did,’t stick in my mind. Actually I think there was some kind of “Latin All Star” exhibition game played after the Mets closed it.

Of course the original Mets owner Joan Payson was a minority owner of the Giants and she tried to buy them to prevent the team from moving to San Francisco. With the young talent the Giants had coming from American and Latin America (the Giants were basically the first team to sign large number of players from the Dominican Republic) how good would those Payson-owned Giant teams had been (Especially if they could have avoided even 10% of the
stupid trades Stoneham and company made in the 1960s).
In one of those bizarre twists of fate the same wrecking ball that was used to destroy Ebbets Field was used to demolish the Polo Grounds. Does that still exist? Can they use it on Shea or Yankee stadium?

Dan: You might not be old enough to remember but 1963 was the third time a game was promised to b e the last game in the Polo Grounds. 1957 was the last game when the Giants bailed and Shea was supposed to be ready in 63 so the 62 finale was also supposed to be the finale.
Of course the Wilpons have obliterated the Giants heritage from Citi Field. Where is the memory of the Polo Grounds in Citi Field? Just remember Freddy, after 2 years you need a good team to keep filling your new Ebbets Field.

I looked up the last game the Mets played at the Polo Grounds. It was a Wednesday day game, September 18, 1963 and a 5-1 loss
to the Philadelphia Phillies. Craig Anderson got the loss as he was wont to do. The crowd was 1752 for what was fifty years earlier the home of John McGraw and Christy Mathewson. 1752 people? Can you believe that?
