The Mets just re-signed reserve catcher “Ramon Castro”:http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4164 to a two-year, $4.6 million contract. The announcement comes on the heels of the team reaching an agreement with free-agent Yorvit Torrealba, which will be announced pending passing a physical.
In 52 games last season, Castro, 31, hit .285 with a career-high 11 home runs and 31 RBI.
“We are glad to have re-signed Ramon,Ã¢â‚¬â„¢Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ said Mets GM Omar Minaya. “He has developed into the kind of hitter who you want to come up in clutch situations. In addition to what he brings on the field, Ramon is a tremendous presence in the clubhouse.”
Castro is strictly back-up. The pitchers like throwing to him and 11 homers in 52 games is a terrific ratio.
