Phils deal for Lidge

Brad Lidge had an off-year last season, with 19 saves in 27 chances compared to converting 32 of 38 opportunities in 2006. Still, you have to like what the Phillies did in getting the closer for three players, one a minor leaguer.
Like most teams, the Phillies need pitching help, and Lidge affords them the chance to return Brett Myers to the rotation, so they helped themselves in two areas.
So far, the Phillies lead, 1-0 in the off-season, as I would think this trumps the Mets re-signing Moises Alou and Damion Easley.

John, how would you feel if the Mets acquired Garza of the Twins for Carlos Gomez? Why are so many teams interested in Carlos Gomez more so than LMillz?
I understand Gomez has better speed and defense but his hitting in my opinion is not MLB ready.
I still think if we go out and get the starting pitching we need and a corner OF we will be good.
that and a decision on Paulie or someone else behind the plate.
Everything else is a minor move, including changes in the pen.
I’m not sure a flyball pitcher in that little league ballpark trumps a .300 hitter and very good utility infielder.
JD, I posted this yesterday but since you mentioned Lidge, here is my comment.
My theme: where was Omar on this? Why didn’t he make a move? Was it b/c Lidge had some control and only wanted to go where he could close? If not, then Omar blew it considering what the phils gave up (unless that 3b guy is going to be good).
They will move Myers back into the rotation. They didn’t have to give up much (unless the 3b minor leauger is any good) to get him either. And Lidge is buddies w/Billy and would have made a great tandem or trifecta with Heilman and maybe Snachez. Now Omar will have to go out and get a lesser reliver and will have to overpay in players (I’ve heard that Cordero and Rauch are still available and that the Nats want Pelfrey).
With Myers and Hamels at the top of the rotation and Glavine likely back at Atl w/Smoltz and Hudson, Omar better find himself some pitching and quick or add so much offense that we can pound the opposition into the ground.
I’ve been saying this for a couple of weeks that the Philles and Atl will improve along w/Chi,Mil,Arz,LAD,SD,Col. We are in trouble unless we make some significant upgrades. If not we are a .500 team.
I was never very impressed with Lidge. I’m glad the Mets steered clear. The Phils helped themselves by getting Myers back in the rotation but they hurt themselves at the closer position. I believe Myers > Lidge as closer.
I commented on this on a different thread. Omar fell asleep at the wheel. It was a great move by the Phillies.
Omar did not fall asleep on this. I read in two online articles today from the Journal News and Houston Chronicle that the Astros offered Lidge to the Mets but they wanted Gomez and Omar thought it was too high a price for a guy who has a 1 year contract.
Omar has become chicken little. Samee routine last year. Everyone wanted too much. This year everyone wants too much. What hapened to the guy that became our GM, He was Omar the risk taker. Remember, he’s the one who paid too much for Pedro and Beltran with good results. This is Omar Phillips. This franchise is in big trouble. Don’t dream of Santana or any ace. The team or the agent will want too much for the new Omar. Don’t dream of Cordero coming from DC. They want too much so we will get more Mota’s and Schoeneweis’ to fill our needs.
Tell the Wilpons that new stadia only stayed filled for so long unless there is a good team on the field. See Baltimore’s Camden Yards for your perfect example.
And PS to JD, keeping Alou didn’t make us better, it made us worse. Alou will field even worse then in 2007 and his hitting will be absent more often and will one day go down the drain, like Delgado’s.
To Camillo: Teams want Gomez more than Milledge because their scouts say he will be better when he is ready for the bigs.
Until the Phillies replace Rowand, they’re still at a net loss and not leading anything. Giving up 3 players for a 1-year rental of a struggling RP is strictly short term but definitely a positive move for them. But it’s at least another week before it makes sense to start keeping score on offseason moves.
Comment-Sloppy- So, you would have given up Gomez for Lidge? Then, what happens if Lidge walks away after next year because he wants a closing job? If Lidge had more than 1 year on his contract, i think Omar makes the deal. Omar even said that frontline starting pitchers are going to be available and he is saving his chips for them. He also was in negotiations with Billy Beane regarding Blanton and Haren, which could come to fruition later this off-season.
Alou hit .340 last year, his hitting will not dissapear like Delgado’s. Delgado’s struggled for extended periods in both seasons with the Mets. Alou’s fielding is not great but he makes most plays and gives his all.
The Mets have barely done anything yet and you are already sounding like the season starts tomorrow. You guys have to be patient, Omar knows more about this than we do, you have trust that he is trying to make the best moves possible.
not sure omar is being “shicken little” as opposed to being prudent about how to use his resources.
You can’t confuse prospects and money when discussing risk taking. Your prospect pool is finite, but there is always more money to spend!
I expect Omar is willing (and looking to) make a big deal, but only if it makes sense. He doesn’t have an overflowing pool of prospects (as some teams like the Angels and Dodgers seem to), so he better use them wisely.
remember, it isn’t all about going for broke in 2008. He also has to build a winning, sustainable, affordable (or the owners) team for years to come.
The biggest reason for not making this deal is, if you overpay for Lidge now, you don’t have prospects to trade when someone better is on the market. And if worse comes to worst, you don’t make a big move, but have your top prospects to use in the future.
I think that the same people screaming for Omar to trade the farm for 1-2 players right now, will be the ones screaming for his head in a year when the team needs some help, and he has no one to call up or chips to trade, so you see more Chan Ho Park type FA!
To back up Sloppy, we are two months into our offseason so we are patient!
LOL
To defend our GM I believe last year we were leaning on the young up and comers. We expected Endy to be the super sub for the OF and Lastings to grow into one of the starting OF.
Both got hurt so those plans did not happen and late in the year Lastings’ problems at the plate were exposed.
For pitching we hoped Pelfrey would be ready and as it turned out he was not.
I believe that is why he was reluctant to over reach for ppl like Zito ( who I still think is not worth the contract he got ) or any of the other journeyman pitchers who signed for 4-5 years at 12-15 million per.
He did pay a rich price for Alou and even tho we failed this year Alou showed how valuable he is when healthy.
And then there was the in season pickup of Anderson and Castillo when our second baseman went down. Although in hindsight our strategy may have been flawed, I do not believe that given money and free agent constraints that Omar had that terrible an offseason.
In hindsight given the oppourtunity to get Blanton for the price asked by BB I think I would pull the trigger on that one.

Azy:
1. If are irrelevant. Your logic dictates doing nothing ever because something bad might happen. We won in 2000 by getting a pitcher who walked away, so what. We got to the WS.
2.
sorry about that I clicked the submit by accident.
2. Alou’s average doesn’t matter. He doesn’t play more than a half a season so you need a back-up regular and Endy has proven he ain’t that guy. So he hurts you no matter what he hits and his fielding is about the worst in baseball as is his arm. And why do you guys think he’ll never stop hitting? It hapens to all of em. And he won’t hit 340. Even Cleon only did it once.
3. Patient, why when I see this guy OMAR, falling for the same routine as last year. He spent most of last winter with Boras while the kind of guys Delcos likes “innings eaters” all got sucked up. Here he is playing with Boras again while the few chips out there are being sucked up. I used to be Omar’s defender, but until he stops being Omar Phillips and becomes the guy we got, I want him gone.
4. To the person who says the Phils have a hole in CF, they will move Shane Victorino there. They won’t miss Rowand. He can steal as many as Reyes and he can cover more ground than Rowand. Unlike the Mets, who don’t protect prospects on the 40 man, the Phils did and so unlike the Mets have an internal guy to fill in CF whi;e we wonder if we will even have a catcher since our kid is a Nat.
5. If Omar reverts back to his old self and makes a good move, I’ll tip my hat here and be very happily surprised.
