Since we're not into changing the dynamic of the team you might as well plan on rebuilding and just start whatever minor leaguer you want and hope they develop. ave the Wilpons some dough, and make whatever excuse you want for Omar.
Serviceable, wow, for 13M? but you don't want the best offensive player in the game.... I just don't get it. Maybe I had a nightmare but I'm sure the 2007 Mets didn't make the playoffs.

Galavine,

My point about him as JD and I have repeatedly stated is he is still a good pitcher.

Yes he is not dominant, but he is serviceable and 200 ip is not something to toss away. Yes he has been blown up a few too many times this past year. and He never could throw it past you. His style is control and out thinking the hitter. So as long as he keeps in good shape and can control the ball being 39 or 41 doesn't matter much.

As for his allegiance. He is a Brave always will be. Every year he checks with them to give them first bids. But when he has signed to play with the Mets he came out every fifth day and did what he could to help us win.

I do not think he will be back next year cause it sounds as if the Braves want him back.

My point is we need starting pitching and as the old saying goes don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

i dont care about how many innings he pitched last season, the point is he's done and the braves will find that out next season when he doesnt even make it to september. Ya big deal he pitched 200 innings, whats the point of using that fact if all of his last 3 starts were garbage when the team needed him most. Honestly atlanta and glavine are doing the mets a favor by this. I can't wait for them to hit batting practice off him next season when we face the braves. lol

Why do all you guys who love Galvine and Alou, think they will not slide due to being well over 40,but Delgado at more than a half decade younger is on a serious downhill slide ( JD excluded because he stated Delgado has a bad year).

dave, if glavine had all those great starts with 7-9 innings pitched I'd agree with you but the guy can't go deep, and he needs rookie laden lineups and genrous umps to do his magic. And I would take Traxs because at least he isn't a Brave lover in a Met uniform. He ain't good but he doesn't go whining back to the Braves every year looking for a contract. If we're a first class team we shouldn't play second fiddle to the Braves for anyone. I hate Glavine as much as Annie hates AROD. But if he comes back I'll root for him 32 more times I guess.

Actually he now reminds me of Hershiser as a Met. good for 75 pitches then get him out of there. We can't afford that with the rest of our staff.

To Steve: (RE: Glavine to Atl): Sorry for the misinterpretation. I always thought Glavine would go to the Mets rather than another team if that was his option. Not surprised he would choose Atlanta over the Mets. Last year the Braves weren't an option because of the ownership status. This year they are in the picture so I can't say it's a shock.

I agree with Dave that Glavine is still effective. However, he's not a No. 1 starter anymore. But, his production is more than acceptable for a No. 3-4-5.

I know that last game sticks in everybody's memory, but he more than carried his own weight before that.-JD

Sloppy

a two year record trumps a one year record. And there were a large number of games where Glavine was very effective this past year.

He had 18 games last year of 2 earned runs or less and they won 18 games that he started. So yes he was very ineffective

By the way Trachsel is available if you want him :)

JD: It's a matter of semantics then. You made it seem (to me at least,) that you are surprised that he would be going back to the Braves since he would have last year as well given an offer to sign.

That rag arm didn't want to sign here five years ago. He didn't want to sign here last year either. If he doesn't want to be here then who needs him? We can replace the 200 IP and probably at less than 10 million a year. His 200 IP were a weak 200 IP anyways. He barely got past the six inning. We need a SP who consistentally goes more than six, not just pitches six.

Also, he's a bum.

Did a mention he's a rag arm? He's that too.

We had a great record in 2006 when Trachsel pitched. Why not bring him back too?? Glavine and Trax have as much downside as Alou does.

With appologies to JD...

Found this on the NYT site.

The Mets could sign a free-agent starter. Liván Hernández, Carlos Silva and Kyle Lohse are available, but they do not fit Minaya’s definition of a front-line starter.

Glavine has made it painfully obvious for the second year in a row that we are definitely not his first choice of date for the prom! He will settle with us if he absolutely has to, unless it is too much of a bother for him. That attitude is the absolute last team that this Met team needs right now. The courtship is over. Let him go back to his first love, Atlanta, where I predict father time will catch up with him and his innings as well as strikeouts and effectiveness will all begin to slide markedly. I agree that the Mets should look to move to younger pitching. And for pitchers who's focus is not somewhere else to the point where it is documented every day in the papers.

I dont remember the numbers, but I believe it was about 13/16 games with 2 runs or less.

Plus the mets have 42-24 record in games he started.

That is not below avg.

Offer arbitration and let him go.

He's a decent 5th starter but he'll command a lot more salary than that spot is worth. He'll pitch some good games and he'll pitch some awful ones -- Carlos Silva can do that for the same money and still be around for another couple of years. Jorge Sosa can do that for less money.

What Glavine does or doesn't do during the offseason will have little affect on the Mets' 2008 -- he's not an impact player anymore. He'll help wherever he plays but he doesn't bring enough to put any team over the top.

Can Omar find an older, more boring, medocrity to replace Glavine. NO!! This is crap about his innings pitched. He is now a very below average pitcher who happens not to get hurt, and gets left in way too long every time he pitches bad. Pleae Braves PLEASE sign him. Make us get a little younger.

An option that wasn't as stupid as I first thought when I it came up in-season is Jose Contreras of the ChiSox. His basic numbers this season were awful. But, his advanced numbers (thanks to The Hardball Times) made him look like an upgrade over Jorge Sosa that might not cost much. Contreras' FIP, decent walk and ground ball rates, and low % of batted balls turned into outs makes him look like a halfway decent pitcher if you move him to the NL and put a quality defense behind him.

To Steve: (RE: Glavine): Wrong Steve. You've missed the facts. The reason the Braves didn't make an offer last year to Glavine was because of the pending sale of the team. They had the money, but never made an offer because they weren't cleared to spend it.

That Glavine is talking with the Braves now comes as no surprise because he's always being family a preference. As long as the Braves weren't a player, Glavine would go to the Mets. However, once the Braves became a factor, the advantage shifted to them.-JD

The truth is with or without Glavine as of today we are not the favorite to win the NL East. The Phillies are. We need to find out if the kids are ready and if not hope that Santana or Sabethia go free agent at the end of 2008.

After his last appearance at Shea when he gave up all those runs and couldn't get out of the first inning, Tom Glavine wore out his welcome.

I'd rather have Omar keep bringing up the kids than see Tom Glavine again.

“Eleven current free agents are named in the Mitchell Report according to the Boston Globe. Their agents have been notified.

Shall we start a pool?

Glavine is easily replaceable. Best option, similar price: Livan Hernandez.
