Marlon Anderson, Luis Castillo, Ramon Castro, Damion Easley, Shawn Green and Paul Lo Duca have filed for free agency. Of the six, Castillo is the one most likely to return.
Handicapping the group:
-Anderson: Was productive in an off-the-bench role, but the bench gets filled first. Unless he jumps at the first thing that comes his way from the Mets, he’ll be addressed later.
-Castillo: The most likely to come back. The free-agent market is thin at this position and he won’t break the bank.
-Castro: Won’t be a starter with the Mets, or for any other team for that matter. Mets could bring him back as a No. 2.
-Easley: Wants to come back, but is coming off ankle surgery. Was productive, but there’s no rush to bring him back.
-Green: Both parties have left it open for his return, but that’s for show. He wants to play on the West Coast, but also made retirement noises.
-Lo Duca: Wants to come back, but the Mets aren’t that enthusiastic about the prospect. They definitely don’t want to give him more than one year, and figure to pursue a catcher in a trade.
