Marlon Anderson, Luis Castillo, Ramon Castro, Damion Easley, Shawn Green and Paul Lo Duca have filed for free agency. Of the six, Castillo is the one most likely to return.
Handicapping the group:
-Anderson: Was productive in an off-the-bench role, but the bench gets filled first. Unless he jumps at the first thing that comes his way from the Mets, he’ll be addressed later.
-Castillo: The most likely to come back. The free-agent market is thin at this position and he won’t break the bank.
-Castro: Won’t be a starter with the Mets, or for any other team for that matter. Mets could bring him back as a No. 2.
-Easley: Wants to come back, but is coming off ankle surgery. Was productive, but there’s no rush to bring him back.
-Green: Both parties have left it open for his return, but that’s for show. He wants to play on the West Coast, but also made retirement noises.
-Lo Duca: Wants to come back, but the Mets aren’t that enthusiastic about the prospect. They definitely don’t want to give him more than one year, and figure to pursue a catcher in a trade.

Castro most assuredly WILL be a starter on some team next year. Look at the available catchers. Yorvit Torrealba is terrible.
How do you not see that Castro is a better catcher than Paul Lo Duca?
Just had to share this quote from a Yankee fan. It appeared in AM NEW YORK newspaper today. Corinne Livingston 27 a fan from Manhattan. “As a New Yorker, you have to be optimistic that the team will stay strong, but really, it’s a bleak situation. With Torre and A-Rod leaving, it’s a blow to the entire city.”
This has kept me laughing all day long.
Scott: Yeah, I’m all broken up about the Yankees mess. I can see how the city will go down the toilet now.-JD
Blastings: C’mon, you can’t be serious to think Castro is better than Lo Duca. Quite frankly, the buzz on Castro is he doesn’t work hard enough to be a starter.-JD
JD – what catcher trade do you see as a possibility? this is different than you have been saying. and yes Castro is a backup.
John—Besides a trade for Ronny Paulino, do you think Omar might try to get Brian Schneider? He´s worked with him before in Montreal. I know the guy doesn´t hit much, but he´s supposed to be a good receiver, and might be a decent stopgap for a year or two.
(And if the Mets got ARod, they wouldn´t need as much offense from C.)
To Dave in Spain: (RE: Catcher): Schneider is an interesting possibility, although I believe Paulino is first on their wish list. Based on what Lo Duca has given them the past two years, they have shown they could get by with limited offense from this position.-JD
