Rodriguez opted out of his contract with the Yankees last night, and only a handful of teams have the resources to sign him. The Mets are one of them.
The money Rodriguez will command is better spent elsewhere, especially pitching. Whatever team signs Rodriguez better be prepared not to be able to go after a meaningful free-agent in the near future and to have its salary structure fractured.
Rodriguez’s numbers are without question, but those numbers also include no World Series appearances.
Both Texas and the Yankees were playoff caliber teams when they threw obscene sums of money at Rodriguez with the hope he would be the missing piece. Those teams didn’t win with him and he won’t push the Mets over the top, either.
